Laser pistols are high-tech sidearms that emit a concentrated beam of coherent light, with sufficent wattage (several megawatts in fact) to do considerable damage. They can be powered by battery packs, fusion cells or cabled power systems, but most models use a rechargeable internal battery, charged with Small Energy Cells (except for the Solar Scorcher).
Several different models exist, from low power civilian models to extremely powerful military sidearms. Typically, the main difference are the focusing optics. Civilian models use a laser diode[1], while military ones employ a crystal array, which creates a tighter, more destructive beam, although certain modifications (e.g. a magneting field focusing system) can amplify the performance of a civilian model, bringing it to par with a military one.
Certain models can also be locked down for transport, requiring an arming sequence to make them opreable again.
Apart from pistols, other, more powerful laser weapons exist: laser rifles and gatling lasers.

[edit] Models
[edit] Wattz 1000 Laser Pistol
The Wattz 1000 Laser Pistol is a civilian model, with the wattage lower than police or military versions. The reason for this is that it uses a less powerful cell and a laser focusing diode instead of a crystal array. For security, it can be locked down for transport, with a proper arming sequence needed to render it operable again.

[edit] Wattz 1000 Magneto-Laser Pistol
The Magneto-Laser Pistol is a Wattz 1000 Laser Pistol upgraded with a magnetic field targeting system that tightens the laser emission, giving this pistol extra penetrating power.

[edit] Solar Scorcher
The Solar Scorcher is a special laser pistol which uses sunlight as energy source. In full daylight, the experimental photo-electric cells absorbs light and feeds the weapon for firing six shooting maximum, after which it must be reloaded.
This rare weapon was seen only in the Vault 13 in the armory before the events of Fallout, so before 2161. It might have been sent to the vault as a experimental weapon for test in real condition when opened.

[edit] AEP5 Laser Pistol
The AEP5 Laser Pistol was a military model which was notorious for its problems with overheating.
[edit] AEP7 Laser Pistol
The AEP7 Laser Pistol was put into service to replace the AEP5 model. With a generous battery size, tight shot grouping at range, resilience to extended use, and fairly decent damage output, it is a very good choice for a sidearm and is used extensively in this role by the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave in the Capital Wasteland.
It was the successor to the AEP5, boasting a redesigned focusing crystal pattern, an improved photonic focusing chamber and a selectable laser focus. In addition, it was lighter and less bulky than its predecessor (although still fairly cumbersome compared to the Wattz 1000) and was perceived as a step toward replacing the N99 with a laser weapon as the standard issue sidearm for military forces.
The AEP7 was produced in large numbers, thanks to newly developed manufacturing technologies in the USA, although logistics and supply issues in pre-War USA caused by its prolonged war with China prevented its wide-scale deployment.
Custom variants of this weapon include: Protectron's Gaze, Smuggler's End and Colonel Autumn's Laser Pistol.

[edit] Apollo
| | The following is based on Van Buren and has not been confirmed by canon sources. |
|---|
The Apollo is a primary weapon designed and abandoned by Poseidon Energy that science-oriented characters in Van Buren could complete.

[edit] Home-Made Electric Laser Pistol
| | The following is based on Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and has not been confirmed by canon sources. |
|---|
This kind of electric laser weapon appears only in the city of Los and is to be manufactured using technology contained in the Secret Vault. It's equipped by the low ghouls of the cult Church of the Lost.

[edit] Electric Laser Pistol
| | The following is based on Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and has not been confirmed by canon sources. |
|---|
This kind of electric laser weapon appears only in the city of Los and is to be manufactured using technology contained in the Secret Vault. This rare weapon is only found in the Secret Vault and was weaponry part of Secret Vault guards.
It shoots a blue electric ray.
[edit] Phazer
| | The following is based on Fallout 2 cut content and has not been confirmed by canon sources. |
|---|
The Phazer is a strange powerful laser pistol. Its origin is unknown. It may only be acquired in a special encounter in Fallout 2, which is a shuttle crash around three corpses dressed in a red uniform. It's a reference to the Star Trek weapon.

[edit] Powerful Electric Laser Pistol
| | The following is based on Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel cut content and has not been confirmed by canon sources. |
|---|
This kind of electric laser weapon appears only in the city of Los and is to be manufactured using technology contained in the Secret Vault. This weapon was only found in the Secret Vault. It should act as a sort of shotgun pistol with a powerful shot but slow.

[edit] Appearances
Laser pistols, as described in detail above, appear in all Fallout games.
