There's meat under that armor, and meat can be ground…— Kodiak commenting on Enclave soldiers

Paladin Kodiak, born Greg Bear[2] in 2247 in The Pitt,[1] is a member of the elite Lyons' Pride of the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Among Lyons Pride and the chapter in general, Paladin Kodiak is the single largest and strongest of its fighters. He is the unit's "jack of all trades": He does not excel at any single task like a specialist would, but is capable enough to perform any thing the sentinel needs, from recon, through demolition, to tactical assaults.[3] His size and strength mean he's a particular menace in close quarters, especially when he's using his powered sledgehammer, making him as gruff and vicious as an actual bear.[4]

However, he is also among the most laid back members of the Pride whenever he's not busy swinging his powered sledgehammer around. Other members of the Pride, like Knight Captain Dusk (affectionately nicknamed Dusky by Kodiak) are somewhat put off by his sociability, especially when he's supposed to be preparing for an assault. Kodiak shrugs off their reservations, joking that he was born ready, for anything, and that he's just that awesome.[5]

His attitude developed in spite of his traumatic childhood. It was spent in the violent Pitt, surrounded by trogs, rapists, murderers and hellish pollution. Kodiak never knew his parents and remembers his childhood as mostly surviving on the streets and fighting rats for food:[6] Not an environment for a child to grow up in, much less live.[1] He survived among the ruins together with his older brothers, Grudd Bear and John Bear, until the Scourge.[7] Kodiak remembers the sight of the Brotherhood force coming over the mountain into the city. As Star Paladin Owyn Lyons led a purge of the Pitt, rounding up unmutated kids and plundering the city for technology, he was selected for evacuation due to his youth and lack of mutation.[8][4] His brothers were considered too far gone, and left behind, becoming one of Ashur's finest soldiers after the former Brotherhood member began rebuilding among the ashes of the Pitt, not unlike Kodiak, who received his nickname from Lyons' troops.[9]

Although he lost his blood brothers, he gained a new family within the Brotherhood. Together with about twenty other kids[8] he was pressed into Brotherhood service as an initiate. Within the Citadel and under Lyons' care, they were all taught how to survive in the wasteland. The training was tough, but successful.[10] Most of his fellow Pitt survivors went on to join the Brotherhood as full members, with a lot eventually dying in battle. By 2277, Kodiak was the only survivor of the Scourge still stationed at the Citadel.[11] Despite the losses, he is convinced that Lyons saved him from the Pitt, and sees him as his father, by deed, rather than blood.[4][10] As such, he served over twenty years as a small token of gratitude for Lyons risking everything and going into the Pitt outmanned and outgunned. Faithful service is the best form of thanks he knows.[12]

Kodiak: "The rivers. Even after the war, they were still flowing, but irradiated, and filled with God knows what else. I saw things there I can't even begin to describe. I was only... what... eight years old when I left? Hell of a thing for a kid to go through."
    (Kodiak's dialogue)
Note: Paladin Kodiak claims to have been around eight years old when the Brotherhood swept through The Pitt. The Scourge occurred in 2255, making his birth date about 2247.

    (Kodiak's dialogue)
  3. The Lone Wanderer: "What's your combat specialization in Lyons' Pride?"
Kodiak: "Hell, I do it all. Recon, demolition, tactical assault. Guess you could say I'm the Pride's jack of all trades."

Paladin Kodiak (also known as Greg Bear) is the largest and strongest member of Lyons's Pride. He is actually considered the largest and strongest member of the Brotherhood of Steel in general. As the name implies, he is as gruff and vicious as a bear, and he excels in close combat with a Power Sledge. Paladin Kodiak owes his life to Elder Lyons, who rescued Kodiak as a child from a distant city known as 'the Pitt.' Because of this, Kodiak thinks of Elder Lyons as his father."

  5. Paladin Kodiak: "Hey hey, Dusky. How's it going?" or "How's it comin' along, Dusky?"
Knight Captain Dusk: "For someone who should be preparing for an assault, you seem to have a lot of time to be social."
Paladin Kodiak: "Oh, please. I'm ready for anything, at all times. I'm just that awesome. You know that." or "You know me, Dusk. I was born ready for anything!"
Knight Captain Dusk: "Well, the rest of us have work to do." or "If only we were all so lucky. I have work to do.

  6. Lone Wanderer: "What happened to your parents?"
Paladin Kodiak: "Hell if I know. I never knew them. I lived on the street and fought with rats for food."
    (Paladin Kodiak's dialogue)
  7. Lone Wanderer: "How did you end up in the Brotherhood?"
Paladin Kodiak: "Now that's a story... The only reason I'm here is because of Elder Lyons. You see, I grew up in the Pitt. Don't suppose you've ever been there, huh? It's about 500 klicks to the northwest. Place is a nightmare three irradiated rivers coming together. People there were... not well. But the Brotherhood of Steel came down on the place with a righteous hammer. They called it 'The Scourge.'"
    (Paladin Kodiak's dialogue)
  8. 8.0 8.1 Lone Wanderer: "How did you escape?"
Paladin Kodiak: "As they swept through, the Brotherhood policed up every non-mutie child they could find. Turns out, there weren't that many. Me and maybe twenty others. The younger we were, the less of a chance that we were mutated. It was ugly work, no doubt, but it had to be done. I'll never forget the sight of the Brotherhood of Steel breaching the breast of the mountain at dawn."
    (Paladin Kodiak's dialogue)
  9. The Lone Wanderer: "How did you rebuild after the Scourge?"
Ishmael Ashur: "It wasn't actually that tough. The Scourge had cleared out a lot of Trogs, so we had space to move in. The Brotherhood had looted a lot, but they left even more behind as 'damaged goods.' And you can rebuild a lot out of 'damaged goods.' For example, they took one survivor, a kid they called 'Kodiak'. But they left his big brothers behind, because they were too wild and mean. But as it turns out, the Bear Brothers were some of my finest soldiers. At least, until they went up against you."
    (Ishmael Ashur's dialogue)
  10. 10.0 10.1 Lone Wanderer: "How did you end up back here?"
Paladin Kodiak: "Elder Lyons brought us all back to the Citadel. He said it was the safest place he knew of. This place was still being converted. He put us in as Initiates and kept a watchful eye over us. He was tough, but he taught us to stay alive. The man is like a father to me."
    (Paladin Kodiak's dialogue)
  11. Lone Wanderer: "What happened to the other kids from the Pitt?"
Paladin Kodiak: "All of 'em became Initiates. Most of them went on to become Brothers. A lot fell in action. I'm the only survivor of the Scourge of the Pitt still stationed at the Citadel."
    (Paladin Kodiak's dialogue)
  12. Lone Wanderer: "That's pretty amazing, Kodiak."
Paladin Kodiak: "Nah. The amazing thing is Elder Lyons. He risked everything went in outmanned and outgunned. I'll never be able to thank him enough. So I do my best to serve the Brotherhood. I know that's what he really wants. In time, I'm sure you'll understand."
    (Paladin Kodiak's dialogue)
