[edit] Walkthrough
This quest begins inside the Nuka-Cola Plant. On the second floor of the office section, in the southwest corner, the Lone Wanderer should find the body of Winger Mercier. On his corpse will be the Finding the Formula note. Examining the note via the Pip-Boy 3000 will trigger this quest.
The note calls for Winger Mercier to find the secret Nuka-Cola Clear Recipe from the R&D Department of the Nuka-Cola Plant and return it to his partner, Goalie Ledoux, who is awaiting him at the Red Racer Factory.
The formula is actually inside a locked safe in one of the walls of the R&D Department. The R&D room is the first room on the left as the player enters the Nuka-Cola Plant. (There are no signs for the "R&D" department except for the word "RESEARCH" written on one of the walls.) The Formula from the safe is actually an Item (weight 1, value 150), so it won't be in the "Notes" section of the Pip-Boy. There is no actual info about the formula.
The safe requires a key to open. To acquire the key, the player must find the Mister Handy robot named Milo the Shipping Foreman at the lower level of the Factory Floor. The player can pass a Speech challenge to convince the robot to give them the key, or if they have the Robotics Expert Perk, Milo will give it to them automatically. The player can also kill Milo with no karma change. Otherwise, the player can look for a note by the computer in the office next to R&D (Storage and mixing vats) called " Welcome to the Nuka-Cola Family! ", that contains ID data allowing them to pass the ID check. If all else fails, the Lone Wanderer can acquire it from him in less civilized ways.
The Red Racer Factory is only a few miles NE of the Nuka-Cola Plant. Ledoux and two members of his Ice-Gang team will be waiting for the player in front of the factory entrance. The factory itself has little to do with this quest; and just showing up outside of it with the formula will be enough for Ledoux to appear.
Ledoux offers 250 caps for the formula, or the player can try to convince him to give them 400 by passing a Speech challenge. Ledoux is accompanied by Winger Gervais and Centre Dubois, forming Sudden-Death Overtime, the last of the icegangs.
[edit] Notes
- You must begin the Nuka-Cola Challenge quest in order for Goalie Ledoux to appear. If you are not on it or have completed it, he will not appear and you will not be able to finish the quest.
- If the player acquires the Nuka-Cola Clear Formula without finding Winger Mercier's body, Ledoux will still appear at the Red Racer Factory and offer the reward.
- Failing The Nuka-Cola Challenge constitutes completion.
- If the player kills Ledoux, his hockey mask gives them +25 AP when worn.
- Killing Goalie Ledoux after selling him the Nuka-Cola Clear Formula will also allow the player to take the formula back. The formula can then be sold to a vendor for more caps. (confirmed all platforms)
[edit] Behind the scenes
- The quest name, "Just for the taste of it" was a slogan used by Diet Coke starting back in the late 80s.
- All the names are closely related to hockey positions.
[edit] Bugs
- There has been a reported case where the Lone Wanderer meets up with Goalie Ledoux (after completing The Nuka-Cola Challenge)and can sell him the recipe after having sold it to a vendor and then being able to kill him and get the recipe back. (Confirmed on PC)
- The quest does not trigger upon reading the Finding the Formula note. However, Goalie Ledoux and the members of Sudden Death Overtime will be present if the PC has the Nuka-Cola Clear Formula from the research division of the Nuka-Cola Plant.(confirmed all platforms)
- After the transaction, the other members of Sudden Death Overtime will leave and Goalie Ledoux will remain in his spot indefinitely. (confirmed XBox 360, PS3 and PC)
- If you find the Nuka-Cola clear formula, and then drop it before talking to Ledoux, you can still sell it to him for the reward. It is then present in his inventory if you kill him, leaving you with 2 copies once you pick up the one you dropped. (confirmed XBox 360, PC)
- When Milo, the Shipping Foreman initially approaches the character asking for confirmation instead he just opens dialogue saying "What is it now? Sir/Ma'am" (Depending on PC gender). Any further attempts to open dialogue result in the same phrase repeated over and over. (confirmed XBox 360, PS3, and PC)
- The above mentioned bug may cause "The Nuka-Cola Challenge" to mark as completed and Goalie Ledoux will not appear at the Red Racer Factory. (confirmed XBox 360 and PS3)
- After encountering the same issue as above with Milo after installing Broken Steel, the PC can kill Milo to take the key to the safe, and can still acquire the formula, but Sudden Death Overtime will not appear at the Red Racer Factory. (confirmed XBox 360, PS3 and PC)
