I Forgot to Remember to Forget is a companion quest in Fallout: New Vegas.

Quick walkthrough

Gain Boone's trust, visit the place of the Bitter Springs massacre, defeat the Legion attackers, then talk to Boone about how to accept his past.

Activating the quest

In order to access the necessary dialogue options, the player must have spoken to Manny Vargas in Novac or Bitter-Root in Camp McCarran about his tour of duty in the NCR and Bitter Springs. In order to trigger the quest, the player must accumulate 5 "history" points with Boone. These can only be earned while Boone is in your party.

  • Killing Vulpes Inculta: +1
    • Vulpes appears at multiple points, leaving several opportunities to kill him. He first appears in Nipton. If spared, he'll appear on The Strip to give you the Mark of Caesar (If you kill Vulpes when he approaches you at the strip, Securitron guards will not become hostile, nor will anyone else, making this the easiest time to kill him). Finally, he'll appear at the Fort by Caesar's side.
  • Camp McCarran
    • When interrogating the captured Legion POW Silus at Camp McCarran, if he dies: +1.
      • Note that this history point is earned for Silus's death at any point, not just during torture. The ideal way of earning it is by making the Speech checks to have Silus discuss the information leaks, talking to Boyd to get the rewards, then re-entering the interrogation room with a weapon and killing Silus with a sneak attack.
    • During the mission 'I Put a Spell on You' at Camp McCarran
      • If you confront and kill the spy in act: +1.
      • If you disarm the monorail bomb: +1.
  • The Fort
    • Killing Caesar at The Fort: +2.
  • Legion Raid Camp
    • During the side quest Booted at Legion Raid Camp, rescuing the hostage Powder Gangers: +2
  • Nelson
    • During the side quest Back in Your Own Backyard in Nelson
      • If you kill the hostages: +1.
      • If you save them: +2.
      • Note: You can also save all 3 hostages, then after Boone comments about saving them, talk to him and run through the dialogue. You can then kill one of the hostages to gain a bonus point on top of the +2 from saving them, with no negative karma and no hostility from the other troops.
  • Camp Searchlight / Cottonwood Cove
    • Eradicate the Legion: +2. This can be done independent of the side quest Eye for an Eye (begun at Camp Searchlight; executed at Cottonwood Cove). Note: Counts after killing Aurelius of Phoenix.

The +2 History Points will provide some dialogue in which the player can respond to which will affect Boone's opinion of you when you begin the actual quest. The following dialogue are:

  • When talking to Boone about Caesar's death, he will tell you that Caesar has an entire line of succession and this will barely slow the Legion down. Regardless he is happy with the death of their leader.
  • If you rescue the Powder Gangers during the Quest Booted, Boone will tell you about the situation. If they get across the Colorado, it will be too late to save them and the NCR should be patrolling for Legion raiders rather than holding Hoover Dam.
  • After you killed or rescued the hostages at Nelson, he will tell you about what the NCR had to do to crucified or captured NCR soldiers as the Legion would use gruesome torture tactics to demoralize the other side. To save them the pain of torture, NCR snipers have to perform mercy killing. If you saved them, Boone will be glad they saw another option.
  • After eradicating the Legion at Cottonwood Cove, Boone would be rather pleased to know the camp where his wife and unborn child was being sold and put out of her misery was wiped out and wish that something like this would happen more often.

Detailed walkthrough

In order for Boone to initiate dialogue about Bitter Springs, the player must have both gained Boone's loyalty and talked to either Manny Vargas in Novac or Bitter-Root at Camp McCarran (after a speech check of 30) about the Bitter Springs massacre. When this happens, the player can suggest going to Bitter Springs. Boone will initially refuse, but later request that the player travel there.

Once you get to Bitter Springs, he asks you to go to Coyote Tail Ridge, where he was stationed, and tells you exactly what happened during the massacre there. He then asks you if you don't mind staying overnight. If you say yes, the screen will fade out and fade back in, with Boone telling you that a Legion raiding party is on the way. It largely consists of recruits, but they can be tough to defeat, especially if you're trying to avoid casualties. Some tougher units will be mingled with the later waves.

The attacking Legion forces come in three waves. The first two waves come toward Bitter Springs up the sloping hill. The third wave comes through a small gap in the side (where the graveyard is located). Two waves of dogs will be dispatched prior to the second and third waves. The quest is considered complete once all three waves are dead. Boone will talk to you again, and at the end of the conversation his armor is upgraded depending on your last answer. Although both armors are only cosmetically different, this choice actually influences Boone's ending.

Notes

  • The name of this quest is a reference to the song by Elvis Presley of the same name.
  • It is possible for either Lieutenant Markland or Captain Gilles to die during the quest, particularly if you are not quick in intercepting the Legion raiders. This will fail their quests: No, Not Much, Bitter Springs Infirmary Blues and Climb Ev'ry Mountain. The presence of refugees and NCR soldiers also makes friendly fire a problem, especially with explosive weapons.
  • After completion of the quest, Mr. New Vegas will report the incident on Radio New Vegas. He mentions that two civilians repelled an entire Legion raiding force, and in an interview, a civilian witness said that "God sent us two angels, and at least one of them had a .308 caliber flaming sword of justice with a telescopic sight". He will say this even if Boone doesn't use his rifle during the quest.
  • If you kill Boone, Mr. New Vegas will mention that he was attacked by a Legion raiding party.

Bugs

  • pcIcon pc If you are unable to initiate the quest because you did the majority of the history point items without Boone as a companion, you can manually add points.
    • Use the console command set "96BCD".nOpenness to 5 and speak with him. Initially he will decline your suggestion to go to Bitter Springs. Shortly after, however, if he can catch up with you (e.g., if you enter or exit an interior cell), he will initiate conversation and ask to go there.
      • The console command works even though Boone's reference ID is 96BCE.
    • Note that Boone has additional dialogue about Manny and his wife at nOpenness 2 and 3, so if you are manually accelerating the quest this way, you might want to set points at those levels and talk with him before increasing points to 5.
  • ps3Icon ps3 xbox360Icon xbox360 Despite the Legion being stated as Prime Legionaries they wear Recruit Helmets instead of Prime Helmets.
  • pcIcon pc xbox360Icon xbox360 After beginning this quest and traveling to Bitter Springs, Boone will sometimes not initiate the conversation necessary to continue the quest and will have only his default dialogue when spoken to.
    • To be able to continue the quest, open the console and enter the command setstage 001349A7 20 This will skip the part of the quest that's glitched, and allow you to begin the "Go with Boone to Coyote Tail Ridge" section of the quest.
  • pcIcon pc The game will crash if you kill Vulpes Inculta before completing Boone's "I Forgot To Remember To Forget" quest in which Vulpes is set to spawn. The game still crashes even with Vulpes alive. Using the console, type setstage 001349A7 40 to skip the stay at Coyote Tail Ridge.
  • pcIcon pc With the 1.4.0.525 patch, disarming the monorail bomb no longer gives a history point if you kill Curtis, regardless of which method is used to disarm it or if it was disarmed before killing Curtis. The point will only be granted upon completion of the quest if Curtis isn't dead, at which point killing Curtis is no longer an option.
  • ps3Icon ps3 xbox360Icon xbox360 Sometimes, if Boone approaches you saying that he's ready to go to Bitter Springs, but you don't immediately accept, he may become stationary and will not move again until you talk to him and tell him that you want to go to Bitter Springs.
  • pcIcon pc xbox360Icon xbox360 If Boone is still looking for enemies even after you have defeated all of the Legion, Boone might say "Let's get through this first," when he was supposed to say the scripted line.
  • ps3Icon ps3 xbox360Icon xbox360 Both points you get during I Put A Spell On You may not count; whichever you do first (save the monorail or kill the spy) will count as one history point, but upon completing the other task the other history point will not register.
  • ps3Icon ps3 xbox360Icon xbox360 After completing this quest, members of the Great Khans may randomly appear near your character when waiting or sleeping. The wait or sleep period will end prematurely and the screen will zoom in as if initiating dialogue (even if no one is in front of your character), but will quickly zoom back out. If you look around, there will be a Great Khan (with whom you cannot speak) standing near your character doing nothing. This may occur numerous times.
  • ps3Icon ps3 The players game will grind to a halt and lock up during the 3rd waves attack. The players variations on approach to engagement, weaponry, tactics, prior saves, rebooting, are all ineffective. If the player disconnects from the network (offline), the scenario will slow but not lock up. One suggested method includes leaving Boone in the Graveyard (wait here) and covering the main entrance to BS as far away from the town as possible. Crawling will occur, but using fast travel in between waves around the local area also helps.
  • xbox360Icon xbox360 ps3Icon ps3 If you ambush Caesar at The Fort and kill Vulpes Inculta he will disappear after the kill shot preventing the player from looting the body.
