Dr. Horace Pinkerton is a 60-year old[1] inhabitant of Rivet City, mysterious and elusive in the year 2277.

Contents

[edit] Background

Pinkerton is one of the founders of Rivet City (see Rivet City Council Minutes, April 25, 2239), but moved to the bow of the ship because of the annoyance that the people of the ship were giving him. He also performed facial reconstruction surgery and a mind wipe on Harkness, an android, to help him hide from the Commonwealth.

Pinkerton was born in the year 2217[2].

[edit] Interactions with the player character

Pinkerton will give information on the origins of Rivet City, to satisfy an optional part of The Wasteland Survival Guide for the history of the city. If The Replicated Man quest is active, he will also give information about the android, and can perform facial reconstruction surgery on the Lone Wanderer, though he cannot change his/her race.

[edit] Pinkerton's Private Computer

Near the x-rays on the wall is a terminal called Pinkerton's Private Computer, it has the following information on it:

City Founders Log

April 25, 2239
Inaugural Meeting of the Rivet City Council
Inattendance:
Science Rep. - Dr. Horace Pinkerton
Civilian Rep. - Annette Holmes
Security Rep. - Brad Danvers
Summary:
As the Rivet City Station Science Outpost has displayed significant stability in its location and reliable profitability for supply traders, a burgeoning civilian settlement has sprung up in the available space on our ship. To better protect and organize this growing community, we declare a three man council will act as a governing body to represent the interests of the residents of the newly dubbed "Rivet City."

Android Log

Hah! I've done it. I've built a Circuit Neuralizer from spare parts using diagrams rescued from that vault last year. I'm brilliant! I'll show those hacks from the Commonwealth now!

Android Log 2

I stole the mem chip from that jerk Braun. Where does he get off robbing people of their souls like that. Anyway, he's so involved in that simulation of his, that breaking in and taking it was like stealing from a little girl. Of course, I won't know whose memories are on this thing until I integrate it into it's new host. But they never specified, so it shouldn't really matter. I can't wait until the subject arrives.'

Android Log 3

I got those memories into that Android like I was God sending down messages from Heaven. Calls himself "Harkness" now. Thinks he's an old combat veteran. Did a little extra tinerking with his reflex system. He's certainly not someone I'd want to meet in a fight. When he "woke up" he was all confused. We told him he was in a coma for a long time. Between the new memories and the new face I gave him, there isn't anyone that would recognize him. Not even himself!

It also contains the before and after pictures of Harkness' operation.

[edit] Notes

  • His personal computer terminal is a bit difficult to locate - it is wall-mounted to the left of the X-ray displays.
  • Pinkerton makes a passing reference to James, mentioning Project Purity with annoyance, and as the main reason Doctor Li fell out of favor with him.
  • Pinkerton's log pertaining to the facial reconstruction and memory wiping of A3-21 includes several interesting notes - namely, that he had "rescued" a diagram for a circuit neutralizer during a trip to an unnamed vault. Another note mentions him stealing a mem (memory) chip from "that jerk, Braun", wondering "where does he get off, robbing people of their souls like that?" indicating that he has visited Vault 112 at least once. Humorously, he says that taking the mem chip was "like stealing from a little girl."
  • He lives in the broken bow of Rivet City, and can only be reached by picking the Very Hard lock to the door above the water, or alternatively by entering the ship by underwater means. The entrance can be easily located by viewing the Local Map in your Pip-Boy. The door is shown and is accompanied by an absence of rocks in-game. The path to his office is heavily rigged with vastly effective explosive traps. He will give you information in the The Replicated Man quest, telling you that he gave the android a new face and new memory so he could start a new life.
  • He is somewhat of an egotist and a cynic, and despised by virtually everyone in Rivet City. However he is quite clearly intelligent and knowledgeable in a number of fields, as seen in his ability to construct various sophisticated firearms and explosives traps, conduct facial reconstruction surgery, as well as selectively alter the memories of a sentient android.
  • Using the console on a PC, a player can remove Pinkerton's "essential" flag, kill him, and find an Android Component on his body (it cannot be pickpocketed). He likely acquired it when he performed surgery on the runaway android (see The Replicated Man).

[edit] Bugs

  • If you turn everyone in Rivet City hostile to you and venture to Pinkerton's hideout, he will appear hostile. This is either a bug, or that he is considered a Rivet City resident.
  • If you have him chase you outside the door to his hideout and close the door behind you (which can only be opened by a switch on the wall) Pinkerton can still open it (PC confirmed).
  • Some times if you turn him hostile and wait 72 hours, he may still be hostile. It is noted that you do not try this as he is considered a resident of Rivet City and everyone else in Rivet City will forever be hostile (using a Stealth Boy can be useful).
  • When asking for facial reconstruction, the player's head may become invisible, making reconstruction difficult. Maybe it's below the camera.
    • The position of your head during facial reconstruction is relative to your height. Since the part of the boat Pinkerton is on is slanted, it is easy to be standing above or below Pinkerton when you ask for facial reconstruction. This causes your head to be higher or lower when it is shown in the facial reconstruction menu.
  • He is no longer deemed "essential" after completing "The Replicated Man" quest.(Confirmed on 360) This doesn't always happen. When completing the quest for both rewards he may still be essential. (This was on 360)
  • If you pick the lock to enter Pinkerton's place, which is a very hard lock, the Mirelurk Hunters that are located on lower level will float to the main deck and attack. The Mirelurk Hunters will attempt to use the stair case but then turn around and appear beside the player. (PS3)

[edit] Appearances

Pinkerton only appears in Fallout 3.
