Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (February 27, 1807 - March 24, 1882) was an American poet born in Portland. He was one of the most famous American poets of the 19th century, seeing success both at home and in Europe.

BackgroundEdit

At the age of 15, he enrolled in a college in Brunswick, where he befriended Nathaniel Hawthorne. Encouraged by his professor, he submitted poetry to newspapers and magazines. After graduating, he was offered a job where he toured around Europe studying several languages. In 1835, his wife Mary experienced a miscarriage, dying one month later. He returned to become a professor at Harvard in 1836.

In 1861, Longfellow was taking a nap when his new wife's dress suddenly caught fire for disputed reasons. He was badly burned attempting to extinguish the flames with his body. A doctor was called but she succumbed to her injuries the next morning, marking the death of Longfellow's second wife. He was unable to attend her funeral due to his severe burns, and continued writing and translating before his death on March 24, 1882.

NotesEdit

  • A plaque at the Old Corner bookstore notes that leading American publisher Ticknor and Fields published his works.
  • His poem Paul Revere's Ride is referenced in a plaque at the Old North Church, where Longfellow details the actions of Paul Revere in the American Revolutionary War. In the poem, he describes when Revere prepares a signal to communicate if British forces would be coming by the river or by land, using the phrase "one if by land, two if by sea."

AppearancesEdit

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is mentioned in Fallout 4 and in the Fallout 3 Official Game Guide.
