Considered one of the "best assault weapons ever made,"[1] the H&K G11 is an assault rifle developed during the late 1960s by Heckler & Koch.[2] It has revolutionized assault weapon design and fires 4.7mm caseless cartridge, a round consisting of a block of propellant with a bullet buried inside.[3] The loading and feed mechanism is physically very complicated but exceptionally fast and reliable. Rounds are fed into the weapon from a magazine that lies above and parallel with the barrel.[2]

The rounds are oriented vertically (at 90 degrees to the bore) and are fed downwards into the rotary chamber so that they can be rotated 90 degrees for firing. Because the H&K G11 uses caseless ammunition, there are no extraction and ejection steps.[2] The resultant weight and space savings allow the H&K G11 to have a very high magazine of 50 rounds.[3]

Characteristics[]

The Heckler & Koch G11 uses 4.7mm caseless ammunition in a 50-round magazine. It is effective against well-protected enemies like wanamingos, even though ammunition for it can be hard to come by.

The H&K G11 does 1.5 times its nominal damage; 15-30 damage per round, together with a negative DR modifier, makes it one of the better options against well-protected enemies, even in single-fire mode. Two bursts are likely to kill a wanamingo, three most certainly will.

Its major downside is that ammunition is virtually unavailable in the north, while the places where more ammo can be bought will also sell better weapons: the .223 pistol will outdo the G11 in single-fire mode regardless of armor, while the H&K P90c has more powerful bursts by virtue of firing more than twice as many rounds at once. The G11 is a versatile weapon that will do well in either role, but in a game where one can easily switch between two weapons, that isn't exactly a selling point.

However, the player's first G11 is probably the one taken from Frog Morton on top of the Wanamingo Mine, before either alternative is available. At that point, the G11 is likely to be the most powerful weapon available and can immediately be put to good use, at least until ammo runs out.

Although the G11 is an assault rifle and a two-handed weapon, it uses the SMG animation when firing. This means that Sulik and Lenny can use this weapon, while John Cassidy and Vic cannot.
