Contents

[edit] Background

Gob works for Colin Moriarty to repay a debt presumably incurred when Moriarty purchased Gob from Slavers. Gob has been working to repay his debt for 15 years, a struggle since Moriarty, who badly mistreats him, charges Gob for rent and food. Gob - who it is suggested serves as the town's "punching bag" - has an adoptive "mother" named Carol who lives in his home town of Underworld, but no other known family. Throughout the game there are hints that he is in a secret relationship with Nova.

[edit] Daily schedule

Gob spends his whole time at the bar serving drinks of the sort to who ever wants a drink.

[edit] Interactions with the player character

When first meeting Gob, Gob'll will tell the PC to not hit him or anything, and if you act nice to him he'll give the PC a discount on the drinks and other items he sells to the PC, he'll also tell you you some of background and how he got to serving for Moriarty.

[edit] Notes

  • Treating Gob kindly will open up generous discounts, gain the player some good Karma, and reveal some more of his personal past. The discount is especially useful as Gob remains a cheap source of Stimpaks for the entire game. You lose the chance to obtain this discount if you first talk to Gob after Moriarty is dead.
  • If you kill Moriarty, Gob will eventually take over the saloon and place his name over Moriarty's on the front sign. Nova will begin running the hotel and quit being a whore once Gob is in charge.
  • In random NPC to NPC conversation, Nova can be heard telling Gob that she has "arranged time" for the two of them, though at another point she tells you that there are "some places even I won't go". Either she changed her mind, or she is keeping a relationship with Gob secret.
  • In similar NPC to NPC conversation, Gob will tell Nova that he pulled aside a specific bottle of wine that makes her 'uninhibited', to which she calls him 'Gobbie' before he states he'd do anything for her.
  • The player can speak to Carol regarding Gob and his situation (in a positive or negative manner), but no further 'courier' conversation options open upon return to Gob. If the player kills Gob, Carol can be told of his death:
    • If the player simply says that Gob is dead, Carol will become saddened, and Greta will become angry.
    • If the player confesses to Gob's murder, Carol and every Ghoul around her at that time will become temporarily hostile.
  • Gob has a surprisingly high charisma, especially for a Ghoul.
  • After asking about his origins in Underworld, his voice becomes a lot higher and with an Italian-American accent. This can probably be attributed to a mistake on the voice actor's part, who portrays almost all of the male Ghouls in the game with a similar voice.

[edit] Quotes

  • "Wait? You're not gonna hit me? Yell at me? Not even berate me a little?" - Upon creating friendly dialog with him.
  • "Haven't you ever seen a ghoul before?" - After freaking out when you first talk with him.
  • "Don't hit me!" - Sometimes after exiting conversation with him.
  • "See you soon drunkie." - After buying from him.
  • "Yeah, enjoy... dick." - when asked to buy a drink after being offensive to Gob.

[edit] Bugs

  • While yelling at Gob in random NPC to NPC conversation, Moriarty says, "Shut yer gob, Gob! Ain't that why I named you that to begin with? Cause you talk too goddamn much?" Yet, Carol knows exactly who the player means by "Gob."
  • Killing Moriarty will render Gob hostile, even if the kill was entirely undetected. He can be restored to friendly state through the standard action of leaving town and coming back approximately 3 days later, or by using certain items (such as using a Stealth Boy or Chinese Stealth Armor to make the kill, and remaining hidden for as long as possible while the commotion dies down) to kill Moriarty.
  • Killing Moriarty may also trigger Gob to disappear. If Gob disappears, simply leave Megaton and come back later; he will be back to bartending as usual. It's best to save the game before killing Moriarty, in case something happens to Gob.
  • If the player manages to complete the Galaxy News Radio quest without ever stepping foot into Moriarty's Saloon, Gob will still complain about the radio's reception upon entry to which Nova replies, "I told you Gob, it ain't the radio...it's Galaxy News. Their signal's been shit lately." Perhaps just an oversight on the creators' part.

Even after being good in the dialogue options with Gob, after speaking he will sometimes say "Don't hit me", regardless of your karma.

Gob appears only in Fallout 3.
