Born in 2247, Garza is a physically imposing and very reserved man. Quiet, and very clearly spoken when he chooses to speak. He claims to have had little purpose in his life before Doctor Madison Li helped him through a difficult time in his life. Since then, he has been working for her as a general laborer, lifting heavy laboratory equipment for her team[1][2][3][4][5][6] and Henry Young.[7][8] In his spare time he can be found working out on the flight deck.[Non-game 1][9]
Working closely with Doctor Madison Li and the science team has given him an extreme appreciation of their work. Believing that without them, specifically her and her work, Rivet City would no better off then Megaton.[10][11] After James and his child, the Lone Wanderer encounter Doctor Li she decides to help them restart Project Purity. Taking the science team and Garza to the Jefferson Memorial. Although he didn't necessarily believe in the project, he has complete faith in Dr. Li, and is just happy to help her in any way he can.[12][13][14] When the team first arrived at the Jefferson Memorial, his reservations peaked, fearful of the super mutants who overwhelmed Lyons' Brotherhood here.[15][16] When the Lone Wanderer clears the mutants from the premises, he is grateful for him risking his life to make sure they are safe.[17]
He would work on the project with the rest of the team until just before it became operational. This is when the Enclave stormed the facility and he fled into the Taft Tunnel with the rest of the Project Purity personnel. In his haste, he left his heart medication behind,[18] the stress and shock of the situation causing his condition to worsen.[19] Incapable of moving forward,[20] should his condition not be treated he would die.[21] Recognizing this, Doctor Li will take charge of the group and demand that they go no further until Garza is taken care of.[22][23] She will request the Lone Wanderer give her medicine (either five stimpaks[24][25] or three Buffout with a Speech check[26]) to treat him.[27][28] Meanwhile Alex Dargon, scared and panicking, would suggest that they leave him behind in the flight.[29] There are three options the Lone Wanderer could do; give the medicine directly to Garza or to Doctor Li, who would administer it; convince either Doctor Li[30][31] or Garza,[32][33] who would convince Doctor Li to leave him behind; murder him; or do nothing. Should the Lone Wanderer murder him, Doctor Li, now infuriated, will scold them for their actions.[34][35] If he is murdered or nothing is done for him, Garza will die.
Should his condition be treated, he will be sorry that he is not able to help the group make it through the Taft tunnel.[36][37][38][39] If he survives the escape from Project Purity, he joins up with Brotherhood of Steel and becomes a significant ally.[Non-game 1] He will stay at the Citadel with the rest of the team, however, once Broken Steel begins, he will disappear from the game.
The Waters of Life: A part of the Project Purity team Garza is one of the characters the player must escort to safety. During the quest he will require medical attention. The player can decide to provide him with medicine (either five stimpaks,[24][25][40] or three bottles of Buffout), leave him behind to die, (this option will require a Speech check with either Dr. Li[30][31] or Garza)[32], or be executed by the player. The latter option will prompt Dr. Li to respond in a harsh manner.
Wasteland Survival Guide: Garza can be asked about Rivet City's history, but will simply refuse to answer, whether or not he actually knows anything on the subject.[41]
At one point, a shipment of something he handled for the science team was stolen because the container wasn't locked. Because of this, he was asked to make sure the next one was,[5] which prompted him to go to Commander Lana Danvers, who would send someone down to change the locks.[42]
Garza has accidently stacked crates on top of live cables at least twice, the first time it shorted out a system, the second Henry Young told him to move them so it wouldn't happen again.[8]
Garza attributes his physique to hard, physical labor. He appears to be disgusted by the idea of using chems, especially muscle enhancers.[45]
Garza has a serious heart condition, which is fatal unless he takes medicine regularly.[22][23] He is one of a handful of characters in the series to suffer from a heart condition,[46][47] another being John Cassidy.
Doctor Madison Li would never suggest giving Garza Buffout for his heart condition, she would do so because the Lone Wanderer can convince her that it's what needs to be done and she is unsure of how to proceed.[26][14]
Garza is the only member of the team to make an accurate tactical observation when he arrives at the Jefferson Memorial, advising the Lone Wanderer to watch out for super mutants, who already routed Lyons' Brotherhood at the memorial once.[16]
Once Broken Steel begins, it is uncertain where he goes. However, Daniel Agincourt and Alex Dargon can both be found wandering around the Jefferson Memorial, should they survive.
PCPlaystation 3Xbox 360 Garza can sometimes be found in the super mutant stronghold between Rivet City and Jefferson Memorial. If he dies there, he will not appear as part of the group during The Waters of Life. [verified]
PCXbox 360 If Garza is there at night, and you attack and kill all the super mutants in the camp, he may go over to the makeshift beds at the rear of the camp and fall asleep there until morning, when he will walk back to Rivet City. [verified]
Playstation 3 In the same super mutant camp, Garza may be there at the same time you are, and it is possible he will retrieve the super mutant's minigun (or another weapon, depending on the super mutant type). If this happens, he will continue to have this weapon throughout the game (unless he finds a better one). [verified]
Playstation 3Xbox 360 If the player chooses to leave him in Taft Tunnel, he will not be removed from the game and just stay there, despite his supposedly life-threatening heart attack. The only dialogue option available is the default greeting. There is no way to get him out of this state. [verified]
