For more information on the historical figure, see Francis Smith on Wikipedia.

Francis Smith (1723 - 1791) was a British army officer, most notable for his leadership of British troops in the Battle of Lexington and Concord during the Revolutionary War.

Initially the Lieutenant Colonel of the 10th Regiment of Foot, Smith led a search for weapons and other contraband within Concord on April 19, 1775. His presence was noted by the Sons of Liberty in Lexington, who quickly alerted the countryside. Cautious, Smith continued towards Concord. His men secured sections of the town and successfully destroyed cannons and other weapons.

However, fighting between American militiamen and a detachment of Smith's troops broke out at the North Bridge, where the "shot heard round the world" was fired, signalling the beginning of the Revolutionary War. On the return march, Smith and his men were outnumbered by the militiamen, who coordinated multiple attacks to eventually drive the British back to Boston. Smith continued to serve in the British army afterwards, during the subsequent Siege of Boston, as well as the battles of Long Island and Rhode Island. He was promoted to Major General in 1779 before his death in 1791.

A plaque at the Old North Church mentions his march of 700 soldiers to Concord.

Francis Smith is mentioned only in Fallout 4.
