Forums: Index > Fallout world discussion > What directly inspired the Fallout series?

I have my own theories, but a few just hit me randomly. A few of these are pretty obvious, but a few may not be. Add to this list if you have any suggestions as to what DIRECTLY inspired the Fallout teams over the years:

Amtrak Wars series. Post apocalypse setting, high tech Enclave style Amtrak Federation (they even have a real enclave!), low-tech tribal Mutes, a third faction with a quasi-spiritual view of technology... well, thats where the major similarities cease. But re-reading it recently highlighted a lot of minor similarities. Ishotamaninnewreno 10:09, November 13, 2009 (UTC)

nobody thought of this?: there was a video game, i think it was called Wasteland. or Wastelands. Fallout was a spiritual sequel to it. Black Isles sayd so.Dunmer999 18:17, December 12, 2010 (UTC)

If you want to use the word "directly", then the official answer is "Wasteland". Fallout was sold as the "Spiritual Successor" to wasteland. Agent c 01:11, December 13, 2010 (UTC)

They probably drew from Civil Defense propaganda.--OvaltinePatrol 23:08, December 14, 2010 (UTC)

I'd say a large part of the inspiration probably came from this. --GaussRifle 00:52, December 16, 2010 (UTC)

The true ancestor of Fallout comes from this:
This PnP RPG, published back in 1981 was THE beginning of roleplaying in post apocalypitia. It was also a kick ass game and if you're lucky enough to ever get hold of a copy of this true gem of an RPG, you will see where the guys who designed Fallout got their inspiration from. Aftermath had it all, energy weapons, power armor, robots, mutants.... it had the the lot! I'd say Aftermath would be a collectors item these days if you can find a decent copy of it. Wasteland is the game that inspired it. Aftermath may have those things, but of course it has nuclear creations such as robots and power armor and mutants. Dunmer999 05:20, December 22, 2010 (UTC)

Wasteland may have inspired the creation of Fallout but I contend, and with good reason, that Aftermath! inspired the creation of Wasteland. The PnP RPG came out in 1981 so the creators of Wasteland probably were familiar with the concept of apocalypic RPG's. It's chicken and egg in a way but in this case, the egg was Aftermath! and the chiocken is Wasteland. Captain Taipan 05:28, December 22, 2010 (UTC)

Good point. Also, I like chiocken. Dunmer999 20:08, December 25, 2010 (UTC)

There is much guesswork on the page so thought I'd put in some links for actual interviews and what the developers said about this question:

Interview with Brian Fargo regarding Wasteland/Fallout etc.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp2FsFgd9Uo The Rifts from Palladium, and The Road Warrior are the most likely inspirations, When I play Fallout3 or New Vegas I feel this is what it would be like to be an adventurer in the Rifts Universe
