The Vault begins to used audio files, so I think it's a good time to have your opinion on something.

I have a passion for weapons, even more for sci-fi weapons or post-apocalyptic weapons like those of the Fallout universe, but I was always disappointed about something that is even on Wikipedia - we can not hear the shot sound of a weapon. The sound of a weapon is also what makes it characteristic, equivalent to its design, you can love a weapon just because of its sound (which never was a fan of the sound of the M72 Gauss, the old Alien Blaster or the P94 in Fallout 2? Or the Lincoln Repeater and the Gatling Laser in Fallout 3?) I think it would be a great addition, which further enhances the quality and professionalism of The Vault.

Here, I propose to create on each weapon, a new section called "Sounds" (for those we have the sounds), where there will be (talk about firearms for the moment) the sound of a single shot (for weapons that don't burst - minigun didn't have single shot), burst shot, reloading and when the weapon is out of ammo. I created specifically Vault Boy for each sound (except the burst but it will be done quickly), and I made an example with the M72 of Fallout 2 in my sandbox.

More later, VATS sound for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas will also be feasible. Well, I wanted to know the opinion of the community for this improvement, and if you have a proposal to improves, don't hesitate ;). Itachou [~talk~] 16:17, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

It wouldn't hurt, and the Vault Boy images are entertaining. --233345-cartman1 tinyUser Avatar talk 17:12, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

I say go for it. Sounds are nice. Nitty Tok. 18:47, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

It's very cute, and will certainly adds more fun and value to the sometimes dry articles - Dude101

Well, I have nothing against sounds but I don't really think it needs an own section in the article. There's a template, {{Listen}}, which can list multiple sound files with description without needing an own section. -- Porter21 (talk) 21:50, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

Yes, but it would be less friendly and catchy to listen. This idea came from seeing the different attitude of Aradesh here, each with an audio file attached below. Sincerely, I found it very nice, and I immediately clicked to re-hear the voice of Aradesh with nostalgia. Like Dude101, I think it would give a nice and refreshing side to pages. But don't worry, your template can be used for sound of other things like creatures or technologies in the future (where I have no plans to make Vault Boy). Itachou [~talk~] 22:20, May 30, 2011 (UTC)
Well, the difference is that with characters there are actually related images which can go with the sound files - I don't really see the point of inserting Vault Boy images which are not directly related to the weapon in question. Since you brought up Wikipedia, they pretty much use the same template for sounds and don't make an own section either. -- Porter21 (talk) 22:34, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

You're right, but the Vault Boy lets you know quickly what kind of sound it is, in addition to having a nice and Falloutish side that makes you want to click it. For Wikipedia, it's sometimes not an example to follow, and for now, it has done nothing for firearms. They usually take your template for works of music composers like Beethoven, Mozart etc. well, it's good for that but for weapons of Fallout, I think it would give both too dry and not captivating. Itachou [~talk~] 22:53, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

I say go for it. Only problem is, that's a HEFTY project. --Valoopy sig Valoopy 00:21, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

Agree. For now I'm motivated - hope it lasts ;). I have all sounds of all Fallout games weapons (FO1, FO2, FO3, FNV, FOT, FOBOS) on my computer and the conversion into ogg files doesn't take much time. The most boring is to find the sound but is not very long. I think begin seriously tomorrow or a day after tomorrow. Itachou [~talk~] 01:55, May 31, 2011 (UTC)
The sounds are a good idea, but I really don't think we need the images as well. User avatar tagUser Avatar talk 11:35, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

I think this would still better, the weapon from where they come from, doesn't have the same type of sounds (for exemple the Jam sound doesn't exist in FO1, FO2, FOT and FOBOS, or the charging sound of energy weapons exists only in FOBOS). The Vault Boy may allow to have a quick view on what type of sounds this weapon possesses, in addition to have a very nice Falloutish side. Anyway for that, if something needs to change, it can be done quickly ;). Itachou [~talk~] 12:26, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, had to butt in front of you there Scar, just a continuation from above. Itachou, I understand what you are saying about images and the visual cues they provide to readers. However, in there present format they are a bit overpowering and threaten to overtake these dry pages detracting from the main content. Maybe the solution is to use a icon based format of the VaultBoy with the sounds, maybe even a template as such. User avatar tagUser Avatar talk 12:43, May 31, 2011 (UTC)
I think that it is a good idea, and agree with Raven about the thing about character quotes. More sound for everyone! Scar: "Say 'ello to my little friend!" 12:34, May 31, 2011 (UTC)
Its not just character quotes, I have been thinking about adding in the endings dialogue, but the sound player is just so damn ugly I don't bother. User avatar tagUser Avatar talk 12:43, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

Yes agree, the Vault Boy are too big. I did the best I could to make them small, on the M72 Gauss rifle (Fallout 2), tell me what you think =) (weapons never above 5 sounds in my opinion). I tried the template of Porter, I don't think it is truly made for that. Itachou [~talk~] 14:09, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

What you want is something more along the lines of this:
Shooting noise for the M72 Gauss rifle
SingleShotVB

Hey it's pretty nice! Thanks Ghost you are a god ;). Another test in the M72 Gauss rifle (Fallout 2) page. Itachou [~talk~] 14:37, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

  • I also thought the Vault Boy images were taking a too prominent place on the page. I like how it's now on the M72 Gauss rifle (Fallout 2) page. It's a nice addition, and the weapon pages are most popular, so we are bound to get some good hits on it. JspoelJspoel Vault Boy 19:33, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

Allright, everything is in place, here we go ;)! Thanks all for your opinions! Itachou [~talk~] 21:58, May 31, 2011 (UTC)

Why weapons?Edit

I don't understand why are weapons so special. Fallout games always put roleplaying in first place so I think character quotes in audio would be much more interesting. Though, I personally don't see any harm in weapon sounds. And yes, pip-boy images are good. :) veryblackravenTalk 17:42, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks ;). And Black, if you want to extend it for other things (creatures or technology like Healing Archway for exemple), there is no problem =). I took weapons because it's something important in a game, as important as the roleplaying for my taste, and there are many people passionate about weapons and a lot of players that I know, that appreciate Fallout and enjoy remembered what a sound of particular weapon that have marked them when we talk about weapons (so it's something I think important, even older Fallout players like me or another, and even the new ones will discover what the sound of this or that weapon). In addition, weapon sounds are pretty original and well constructed in Fallout, and have an important place in the Fallout background - war... war never changes =). Itachou [~talk~] 18:27, May 30, 2011 (UTC)

Source?Edit

Let me start off by saying your weapon sound effect idea is pretty nifty and I look forward to seeing it implemented into articles in the future. I would just like to know how you managed to obtain the weapon sound effects. --Jspyster1 00:23, June 4, 2011 (UTC)

GECK. --233345-cartman1 tinyUser Avatar talk 03:02, June 4, 2011 (UTC)
For FO1 and FO2, it would be a file unpacker, same with FO3 and FNV as well. User avatar tagUser Avatar talk 18:04, June 4, 2011 (UTC)

can somebody upload the files in a zip archive? So I may add them onto articles if we are doing so. --Vampire hunter D 11:30, June 5, 2011 (UTC)

Why?Edit

I don't want to sound off as Mr Negative, but if people are playing the game, they come here for info on a gun, character etc. In that case, they already know what the weapon, person or action sounds like. In my opinion this would just clutter up the articles with something that is already a given. When I first joined The Vault, I came here because I was playing Fallout 3 and wanted to know what weapons did what on where I could find the special weapons. I also wanted to see the backgrounds of the various characters I met in-game. That said, I already knew what Gob sounded like and what the Assault rifle sounded like. In my opinion, this project is really not needed and not to mention that many weapons and people use the exact same voice/sound with the exception of key characters (Dad, Mr House or Benny for example). Any comments?--Kingclyde 01:12, June 7, 2011 (UTC)

People are all different and don't need the same thing. Me, I don't come for find trick for games or how to complete a quest etc. (if you look in my contributions, I almost never contribute to quest pages). My interested is exclusively background (places, history, facts, weapons, armors, quotes, sounds etc..) and complete the wiki, not find something. For me Fallout it's not a game, it's a universe that need to be completed like a library on The Vault. I have already given my arguments on weapons, so I will not repeat myself everything is already written up =). Key characters have always memorable quotes - minor characters have never so the question does not arise. Itachou [~talk~] 19:47, June 7, 2011 (UTC)
