Okay Art-Lovers, Welcome to the official logo change page.

I'm planning to work this as follows, but as this is a wiki, I'm happy to take suggestions or be overruled at any point. The goal is to be a bit more organised than the last time.

Process[]

1: First up, we have the "Consulting and Entry" phase. I'm planning to keep this open for 2 weeks. During this time you can create your masterpieces, post them here, and if there's a few Q's from others, you can respond with a few answers.

2: Then comes the first round. If there are too few entries (less than 3) in a category the first round gets skipped. The first round will work like the first phase of the name change poll, with the main difference being that no new entries will be accepted. You will be allowed to vote "Yes" on as many entries as you like, with the top contestants moving to phase two. If there are between 3 and 5, this will be the top 2, and if more than 5 the top 3. This is open for a week or so.

3: The final round will work like the second part of the name change poll, in that you will have a single vote in each category. The previous finalists (or all entries if there are only 1 or 2) will be pitted up against "No Change" - i.e., whatever logo is in that current category.

Categories[]

Given that we've changed the name and are the main logo I think its only fair that we put any logo being used for wiki purposes up as "Fair Game" - as The Vault will probably want to continue using our incumbent logos I think this is the best possible time to put them on the table. Please state which logo you're looking to replace: main logo, news, a template, polls, etc. If you don't I'll have a guess at your intentions.

Nukapedia Category: Favicons[]

Just when creating entries for the main Nukapedia Logo category, please bear in mind that a Favicon will be needed to match... this is probably going to need something with some resemblance to the main logo - at least same colours. I think we night need to look at running partners... Although a little mix and match might also work - I can see Nukapedia Rust Red working well with the top-toward-me bottlecap. Agent c 20:22, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

Nukapedia Category: Sizing and this process[]

Sorry for the late breaking change. In this phase, I'm happy for people to enter representative logos - you should bear in mind that its going to have to fit in place of the current logo, in its current size (that means making sure any text, etc is visible, prominent enough. and its not going to look stretched or compacted) but aren't strictly required to meet any sizing requirements. For those that make it to the final round (phase 2), you will need to display your image on a mocked-up page, so we can see how it will be displayed - you're encouraged to do this now, so you can work out any kinks in the design, but because I didn't think of it first off, I'm not going to require it... Just yet.

Vote stage 1 - Rules Draft[]

Click here for the Draft of the rules for stage 1. If all contestants could please review, and let me know if you're happy with this as presented, or if you'd like to see some changes. I'd also appreciate a comment either way just to confirm it has been read.

How to enter[]

Create a 2nd level heading for your entry (thats the one with two ='s each side) Link to the picture (either direct or upload and post direct). Tell us about your picture, and which logo you see it replacing. Don't forget to sign your entry.

I'd ask those who have submitted logos in previous pages to do so again here, just so you can have your comments. If I don't see an entry from those I'm aware of in a few days, I'll try to get your entry up.

Voting - please read this BEFORE voting opens to ensure your vote counts[]

Voting is not yet oopen, but if you intend to vote, please make sure you are a registered Wikia/Nukapedia editor and have made at least an edit somewhere on this wiki before the polls open. This will help us to determine that your vote is a legitimate one. I intend to open voting on 20 Jan, unless otherwise suggested/over-rulled... Agent c 00:30, January 6, 2012 (UTC)

Process Comments Section[]

  • Yessie, Mr YouTube, if you don't like the temporary titles I've used to describe your entry, you're welcome to change them. Agent c 14:37, January 6, 2012 (UTC)

I dunno where else to put this, but as a general rule of thumb, the primary wiki-wordmark should be 250x65 pixels, or be able to scale to that size. If it doesn't fit this it screws with the formatting of the pages overall and generally looks terrible. I'm just putting this up because I'm seeing a lot of decent but improperly-sized wordmarks here. ЙураYuriKaslov - Sig image 23:51, January 10, 2012 (UTC)

I kinda hoped this went without saying. Do not remove any content from this page - correcting yourself or rewording your own comments are fine. The other comments may contain important points for other entrants. If you want to withdraw your entry, please state so in the comments, do not remove it.Agent c 22:37, January 16, 2012 (UTC)

Final Message for contestants: I think I got this on your talk pages, but it would help if you could create a blog or sandbox entry showing how you would like your entry(s) displayed on the vote page.

Nukapedia "Bottle Logo" Entry[]

Here is my logo. Just credit it to Yes-Man if you use it. I honestly don't think it's that good, but Scar thought I should submit it. (Entry in new NukaPedia Logo category)

Anon114NukapediaLogo

114.77.77.5

EDIT - For competition's sake, I thought I'd upload a better quality one. 114.77.77.5 02:07, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
I think I liked it better without "The Fallout wiki" bit in there, it seems a bit cluttered now. Agent c 02:10, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
Hm. I could leave it as just Nukapedia, but then it doesn't have "Fallout wiki" in the title. I suppose it doesn't matter much anyway considering people know what wiki they're on. 114.77.77.5 02:12, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
Maybe under the bottle spanning its length? Agent c 02:14, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Anon114NukapediaLogo2

Here's one without the Fallout Wiki title. I'll do another with the title spanning the length of the word "Nukapedia". 114.77.77.5 02:16, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Okely dokely, I've done it.

Anon114NukapediaLogo3

I think three variations of the one logo is enough for me :P 114.77.77.5 02:31, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Poll version[]

I'm thinking about the next stage of the process, specifically which version of the logo to put to the poll... I know this technically belongs up in the rules part, but I'm putting it here as this entry clearly demonstrates my thoughts. Where there are multiple versions of the same concept, similar rules would apply. Here we have 3 versions of the same basic concept. They are too similar to stand alone as entrants in their own right, but there is no reason why the community shouldn't have a say on which variant to use. So, there could (presuming the artist opts in for this), be multiple flavours on the poll counted as 1 entrant. So all 3 "Flavours" of the logo could be entered as a single entry. Voters voting for this logo could then indicate a preference for the flavour used... For example, it might look like this:

  • Yes Just Nukapedia (signature)
  • Yes Nukapedia Below (signature)
  • Yes (signature) <- For no Preference.

The creator of the entry could choose which flavours to enter, or could enter a single variant. Should the design pass Stage 1, the stage 2 entry would be the flavour chosen in stage 1 (with ties decided by the artist). How do entrants feel about this?Agent c 03:48, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Whichever one you think is the most fitting, you can choose to be in the poll. I really don't mind; they're all very similar. 114.77.77.5 03:52, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Final Submissions[]

Not sure if I'm meant to put this here, but I've compiled my final submissions (including the news digest logo) at my sandbox here. If you don't mind, take a look. 114.77.77.5 08:54, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

Nukepedia "California Bear Flag" Entry[]

FalloutWikiNewLogo Here is my entry: http://cutlock.blogspot.com/2012/01/new-logo-for-nukapedia.html not a very large image right now, I'll make it larger though. Now, why should this one be chosen? That is a good, good question, the answer is simple, very simple indeed. Unlike other ones which show good design, they don't stay true to Fallout. Its the same thing, why have a show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer when you show Nikita instead. Why have a coca cola bottle as the logo, no offense, when you could have something that actually shows what Fallout is about. The one at the below the red one with bullet holes, while great artistic work, I do not believe shows what this wiki is about at first glance, does not show that it is fallout.

Though, keep this in mind, why have one logo when you can multiple ones. Why just use my one, when for alternating months, you can use other ones. Why use my one or the other ones for the favicon, when you can use something else entirely. Also the wiki's background should be changed, as all designs are leading for a more RED approach.

Vote for the Knights, vote for Youtube.

Cut the locks, but do not be cut down.

--Mr. Youtube 03:34, January 6, 2012 (UTC) (Entry in new NukaPedia Logo category)

In my personal opinion, this is extremely shoddy work. No promises that the NCR will be a recurring element either, so we should stick with a logo that the can referenced to every Fallout game up to date. Skål! 19:35, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

Without adding any comments on the quality of this editor's work, I also feel that the logo should be directly related to something Nuka-colaish. That's the name we chose, like it or not, so that's the motif we need to go with. In for a penny, in for a pound. The Gunny 19:43, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
I Disagree here, I think we can have a "Nuka" logo that isn't NukaCola related - We could just have something related to Nukes, or something generic that doesnt invoke any particular in game symbolism. Agent c 20:16, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
Tuche. Point taken. I will rephrase: I don't feel something as specific as an NCR logo or CL logo is as germane as something Nuka-cola or Nukeythatgoesboom would be.--The Gunny 20:30, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

The majority of the time, successful logos are the simplest and most easily recognisable. Think about Coca Cola, McDonalds, Apple or Google (among others). The logos do not have too much imagery. The issue with this one is that there is too much going on - you have an NCR bear, a sword, a red banner, and then the words. Maybe if it were simplified it would be a lot better. Also, I'm not sure if we're allowed to use the NCR logo for our site due to copyright breach. I'd have to ask Agent c. 114.77.77.5 02:57, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Shut UP ANon! KIDDING! I want everybodies opinions, thank you actually Anon, thank you Agent C, why do you think that I am putting up more and more logos. So we have more of a choice, thank you Gunny, I will make a bottlecap and a coke logo as well. Cheers - Mr. Youtube 03:49, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
Good Point Phantom. I'm not a lawyer (I'd like to be though!) so I'll refrain from answering questions on Copyright/trademark breaches directly. However I'll shoot a message to Gstaff on the Bethesda forums when I get home and see if there's any guidance I can get from them. Agent c 20:26, January 12, 2012 (UTC)
I asked Matt to check with Pete (or whomever he checked with) about using words related to their copyrights and he said there would be no problem, but I didn't ask about graphics/icons. I imagine that may be a different situation. The Gunny 380px-USMC-E7 svg 21:18, January 12, 2012 (UTC)
I've had a response from Gstaff, he doesnt see it as being an issue, but is happy for us to run the finalist by him. Agent c 05:06, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

In case you're wondering, your logo looks smaller in the news article because of all the white space around it.... I limited all images to 200px on that article so they all look nice... If you could crop that, I can change the news piece so its more prominent. Agent c 00:33, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

Four by me, why? Because I care, I want to make sure that this wiki gets the attention that it deserves. A new logo, a new background all in all a new mainframe. More info on that when the next logo to pick comes form yours truly. --Mr. Youtube 04:15, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Carinth's Entries[]

[]

(Entry into Nukapedia Logo) I chose my submission for a feel of not only the wasteland but the wastes of the cities too. What better caption then the major turning point in the games events. Many things revolve around this once great city but no more than here and if you look hard enough you can still see some of its beauty. Varying typefaces to reflect the different themes within the game and here at wiki.--Carinth 03:49, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

A variation of the original design using an edited screenshot and slight variations on type.

I really liked the type and style to this one and wanted to see how it would stand alone without a back drop as far as readability while staying to the same colorization themes as before.

[]

I thought the typeset looked like it needed something a splash and since alot of people have included caps I thought I also should just toss my hat in and make some to go along with that theme also.

I had also considered making a logo using the conventional fallout-type on the word fallout. However, I find the design is available throughout the site and on its pages continuously in the game-logo graphics. I felt it was unique in itself but not to wiki as a logo. The type should be reflective of the games but unique to us and as our logo. If you would like I can put one together, just let me know.--Carinth 21:40, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

I had one little last minute idea just to be a little different. I guess you could say it's a vault boy addition but not much of him there.:) Here is my last idea, still sticking to my previous typesets but giving it a bit more space for the type and a good old thumbs up.--Carinth 04:13, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

Vault Boy Entry[]

Ah great, now here's some simplicity. This one's nice, simple, tells you where your going. You don't necessarily need it as a logo, but maybe a picture up front like at the Forgotten Realms wiki something to signify where you are. Nevertheless, it would make a damn good logo, someplace. --Mr. Youtube 04:15, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

The other important thing to think about when creating a new logo is how easily recognizable it would be as a 16x16 favicon. The vault door was a good one in that respect. 14:47, January 6, 2012 (UTC)

Mushroom cloud[]

Not much of a logo, will probably be updating this soon but i came out with this. Not finished it fully but the final design should (if uploaded) look something like this. Not sure about the vault boy image though as it may be a copyright infringement. This would be to replace the news logo Also a new idea was to replace the vault boy image later on with the new updated vault logo. Of course that will need to wait for the release of a new site logo

Just a heads up, you may want to check out the spelling of your logo:P--Bunny2Bubble 06:10, January 7, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up will update soon --I don't wanna set the world on fire 15:27, January 7, 2012 (UTC)

No more updates for this. I have got 5 exams coming up so i've got my hands pretty full at the moment. Consider my misspelled image my final entry :( --I don't wanna set the world on fire 16:57, January 20, 2012 (UTC)

Wiki News Digest Logo - Vault Boy at GNN[]

GNN

This entry isn't for the main Nukapedia logo entry - its my proposed change for the wiki news digest logo. Whilst the Vault boy at the terminal is a great image, I imagine the vault will want to keep using it. Its based on the Smooth Talker logo, and the NBC radio network logos. (News Category) Agent c 21:25, January 6, 2012 (UTC)

Entrant version[]

Presuming we play by the Flavour rules I've suggested, this entry's alternative version could have the letters NNN - presumably for Nukapedia News Network, or WND, for Wiki News Digest. Agent c 03:55, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

NNN has a nice ring to it. 114.77.77.5 03:56, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Rusty Red Metal - Nukapedia Logo (Main)[]

Nukapedia2

I threw this idea out before and if enough people like it (or have suggestions) I'd be happy to amend it (letters bigger/smaller/different font, more/less/different placement for rust blowouts, etc.). Although I really like the bottle and bottle cap ideas above. In my mind those could be favicons, and something more 'blown-out fallouty looking' like mine would be the main logo - but obviously I'm biased :).

On a side note: I think no matter which logo wins, even if it's just 'Nuke'-based (mushroom cloud, etc.), that we should think about altering the GREEN motif on this wiki. I assume it's alterable, as different wikis have different motifs to match the theme of the content. In this case, I think we should go RED. The rusty green metal repeating-background I think should be RED-hued. The buttons and header and footer divs should also be RED gradients. Or, at the very least, we should see what it looks like. In my opinion, it will not only better match the new logo, but will also better match the newest game in the series, New Vegas. As we all know, New Vegas has a strong red/amber motif in its logo and menu design. Thanks for reading! ---Person of Refinement 21:02, January 6, 2012 (UTC)

YES! If yours does win, we will have to amend, though I feel you as my main competitor. Great work coming from another participant. Cheers - Youtube. --Mr. Youtube 06:07, January 7, 2012 (UTC)
That is a very nicelooking logo, and I completely agree on the future colorpalette issue, even though I'm a bit sad losing this wonderful green/gray tone. But a red/gray (doesn't have to be red/amber in my eyes) would still be very fitting for a Fallout wiki and fit well with your logo design. If it really has to be changed more than a red/sandgrainy background might just do the trick. --BusinessMonkey 11:16, January 7, 2012 (EST)
I really like it, and think this is one to beat... But some sort of companion Favicon would be needed (perhaps one of the bottlecaps) Agent c 20:35, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
Looking at this again, I still like it very much, but the colours look a bit too weak. (I know the Wasteland would clearly do that to all sorts of logos, but some 'lively' colours can look more appealing, than something more realistic.) Seeing the below entry, I'm very anxious about the final entries to somehow needing to share the same colour palette and intensity. Can't have one logo with a weak red and another with a much more fuller red on another part of the site, so maybe when we finally decide, we should 'conform' our final logos more. I hope this works, I'm a bit new to Wiki usage; I've been more of a viewer up to this point.

NukaPedia Logo

Hey, it worked! Sweet deal. Well, here's my little bottlecap, with plenty of rust for good measure. @Mr. YouTube: I like the idea about changing the motif as well, and whatever happens with this competition, I would love to help with the design and implementation of a new theme, if you guys will have me.

Oh, and this would be intended to replace the wiki's primary logo. Tell me what you guys think!

Thanks, Doc Incognito 18:54, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

PS: I almost forgot, this is the thumbnail version. If anyone needs it, I have a full 1000*1000 version. Edit: Also, the rust pattern that I used is credited to got3d.com

Very nice. If in the end this isn't chosen by the community as the main logo, I think it would at least make a perfect favicon. It's a little close to The Vault's cog-door, but there isn't a lot you can do with such a small icon anyways. The Gunny 19:05, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
This is quite nice, I like the ribbon effect in the middle, and it can even be seen as a homage to this place's origins. I'm wondering perhaps if we need a seperate Favicon category, as I think this would work well with the Nukapedia Rust-sign. Maybe we need to add to the next, or final stage for main icon entries a running partner for favicon? Agent c 20:20, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
Hey guys, thanks for the comments. Do you think I should start putting together a favicon to accompany this? Doc Incognito 21:32, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
I certainly don't think it would hurt.The Gunny 20:37, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
Beat me to it Gunny. Agent c 20:46, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
I like this (and the hidden omage to The Vault) very much. I'm just a bit worried how this can be implemented in a broader rectangular version (like the above main logo entry) where you can read the rather important (at least in my opinion) subtitle of Fallout Wiki with the Fallout logo'n'all. Otherwise a wonderful entry. It's more simplistic than the above entry, so I'm pretty undecided between the two. Maybe some more rust or shadows would do the trick (make it look more metallic), even though I fear it very easily could ruin the great 'immediacy' of the logo. Nonetheless I'm overwhelmed by the quality of some of these entries. BusinessMonkey 22:04, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

Hello all, here are some favicons, in 16 x 16 pixels or less, or your money back.

NukaPedia Favicon- Squiggle

Here we have the bottlecap and squiggle...

NukaPedia Favicon- N

And here we have the bottlecap and "N" for NukaPedia.

@BusinessMonkey: That's a good point, the addition of "The Fallout Wiki" could be pretty important. I have a way of incorporating it that just might work, so I'll report back here with a draft. Doc Incognito 23:08, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

Well, I'm back with a banner image, but it didn't turn out as well as I imagined.

NukaPedia Banner

I tried to use gradients to make the new portion have the illusion of curvature, sort of like an old soda machine, but as you can see, that didn't work out. Anyone have some suggestions?

Thanks, Doc Incognito 23:30, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

Well, if it were up to me, you'd be the winner right here. I think this is the best submission we've got yet. Good work. 114.77.77.5 23:33, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
Damn, I think we have a new front runner. Having "the Fallout Wiki" staggered like that doesn't work for me, but the mix of fonts does, as does the colour.... Great work! Agent c 23:40, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
Well, we could ask him to put the words one above the other, and maybe a bit larger. I do like the favicons, though, and I'm sure we could implement those starting today if the community complies. 114.77.77.5 23:42, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
I was just editing my comment to say something like that. Just a suggestion, up to you DOc, but maybe "The" hard left, "Fallout" starting somewhere under the E, and "Wiki" starting just before where Fallout ends... Would allow each word to be a bit bigger - although I'd make Fallout a bit bigger than the others - give it the right emphasis. Agent c 23:44, January 8, 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for all the feedback, guys! Is this better? Doc Incognito 00:05, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
NukaPedia Banner- Stacked and Staggered Words

I personally think that there shouldn't be a vote, and that we should just use this one. But, I doubt Agent c would be happy with me for that. Anyway, both look great. I'll leave it up to Agent to decide. 114.77.77.5 00:56, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

I love this one a lot and it definitely has my vote. I love the green scheme of our wiki though.--Bunny2Bubble 00:57, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
Hmm.... good point there, Ryan. Either we's have to change the background and colour scheme to reflect the logo, OR we get Doc Incognito to kindly change his logo so that maybe only the bottle cap is red and the rest is green. 114.77.77.5 01:00, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
We'd need to have a vote not to have a vote I think... *g* I think we should be fair to the others, and I've got an idea on a different track I want to see if I can make work...Agent c 00:59, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
If we did a red and green logo, it would make me think "Christmas" too much, you know? We'll see how it works out.--Bunny2Bubble 01:04, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
I agree, red and green does say "Christmas" to me, so I would lean towards a red color scheme. As I stated above, in the event that you guys go with a red color scheme, I would be happy to develop further images that would be needed. Doc Incognito 01:07, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
In the event that it does change to red, let's make it a soft red. The 28 days later wiki hurts my eyes lol.--Bunny2Bubble 01:09, January 9, 2012 (UTC) http://28dayslater.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page

I would suggest that we... erm... test run a new wiki colour scheme. It scares me to think of how people will react to a red Fallout wiki, but if it must be done it must be done. Of course, we run it by Clyde and the admins first. 114.77.77.5 01:13, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Personally, I like it right now. But a red colour scheme would be... abhorrent beautiful, in my opinion. -ΣΔLet's talk! 01:28, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

I put a screenshot of the wiki into photoshop to see what a red wiki looks like.

NukaPedia colour scheme

I made all the buttons and banner red, added the logo and favicon, and made the green background a bit more brown. Personally, I don't like it red, but it's up to the community to decide. Also, the logo was a bit large so it would be stretched if we added it as-is. 114.77.77.5 01:47, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Hmm that actually looks good 114, it would be strange to see this wiki have to take on the red colour theme instead of its common green but it would suit the logo more.AaaaaThe Nemesisx 01:55, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Oh, I'll tweak the banner to fit without stretching. One moment. Doc Incognito 02:08, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

NukaPedia Banner- Stretched to Fit Site

There we go, that should fit (hopefully). Thanks, 114 (your image proved a helpful guide). Doc Incognito 02:33, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

No worries. I'll put the revised logo into photoshop and show you how it looks :) 114.77.77.5 02:35, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Nukapedia new logo

What do you guys think? Personally, I think it looks perfect. Good work, Doc! 114.77.77.5 02:42, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Wow, that worked better than I could have hoped! Thanks 114! Doc Incognito 02:49, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

I really love your design, Doc.

My 3 cents (just my colorful opinions):

  • I think Nukapedia should be on one line. The name is Nukapedia. 'Pedia' isn't a distinct thing and I don't think it should get distinctive treatment.
  • I'm not a fan of 'The Fallout Wiki' being written in different fonts. When multiple-word concepts have multiple fonts I feel like it loses a lot of power - and starts looking like a newsletter that the suburban mom office manager sent out.
  • Most important, I think the words should be as big as possible in the 250x65px format. Giving away space to the background design just makes it less commanding.

I love the idea, though - it inspires me to tweak mine around a little. ---Person of Refinement 03:04, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Oh goodness I didn't even get the Vault-homage in the vault-door-turned-bottle-cap. This just got even better. Also: I see it has a concrete/mortar texture - do you have a more metal-like one to match the material used in a bottle cap/Nuka Cola vending machine/vault door? ---Person of Refinement 03:19, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
Oh my god you sly dog you! You even subtly used that same rust blowout I was using. Ha! Fuckin hats off, man. ---Person of Refinement 03:22, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

I've found a lovely metal texture on Deviantart -
http://freestock.deviantart.com/art/Brushed-metal-texture-80120537
All it requires is for Doc Incognito to request usage of it for this site, and then to add some sort of credit linking back to the user. It can't be that hard, can it? 114.77.77.5 03:26, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the link, 114. I will work on adding this tomorrow, as it is regrettably time for me to be going. Doc Incognito 03:35, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
A number of responses
  • At having Nuka and Pedia be together: I'm kind of opposed to this; I modeled this cap off of a Nuka Cola cap, which has the squiggle in the middle, the word "Nuka" above, and "Cola" below.
  • At different fonts: if there's some consensus, I could either make the Fallout logo be the cursive font, or if anyone knows what font the Fallout logo is in, I could do the reverse. Thoughts?
  • I agree, sizing the words up makes sense, though the staggering may look somewhat different. Once the font question is answered, I'll make those changes.
  • At the Vault homage: Actually, that was kind of accidental :/. My first thought was, "Hey, I'll make a bottlecap!". My second was, "Hey, that kind of reminds me of The Vault door!"
  • At the texture: It is a metal texture :(. I suppose the resizing distorted it a bit.
  • At the rust blowout: that's funny, I didn't realize that until you pointed it out. I knew I needed a metallic texture, and after digging through my computer, I managed to find the Resources folder for an old project with the rust texture.

Doc Incognito 03:32, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Ah, sleep can wait. Graphic design waits for no man. Here's a version of the bottlecap and banner with the recommended metal texture:

Doc Incognito 04:36, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

I gotta admit to liking this also. One thing I was thinking about was the background. You can load custom graphics to use as the background. Any chance you could play around with the nuka cola machines' look and maybe put a glass door with ice cold sodas for the right side background and then maybe like a coin slot and other widgets on the left side background? Kinda like making the entire background that borders the page look like a nuka cola vending machine? The Gunny 04:53, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
Ooo, that sounds like a fun one. I'll work on that over the next few days, and update you guys wih my progress here. Doc Incognito 12:21, January 9, 2012 (UTC)
Here's the first bit of the vending machine idea. I'm modeling it off the Nuka Cola vending machines, and that bit to the right is where the sodas will be displayed. It's going to take some playing with bevels, gradients, and shadows to get the feeling of depth right. I'll check back tomorrow with progress. Doc Incognito 03:04, January 10, 2012 (UTC)
NukaPedia Background V1- Full

Looks good. I assume this will be displayed on the left side of the page, correct? Which would mean the right side would feature a coin slot and whatnot. I look forward to seeing it complete, and hopefully the administrators are fine with implementing it (which I'm sure they would be). 114.77.77.5 03:09, January 10, 2012 (UTC)

Oh, thanks for reminding me. I decided to start the background as one continuous piece, but once it's done, I'll split it down the middle. The coin slots will go mid-right, as pictured here: http://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Nuka-Cola_vending_machine

Doc Incognito 04:11, January 10, 2012 (UTC)

( Time for me to jump in I believe. I think the current bottle cap logo from Doc Incognito looks the best from what I’ve seen so far. It’s too much red (area around FALLOUT WIKI) though in my opinion, what’s too distracting. That’s also the reason why I don’t agree with the Nuka-Cola machine background. That’s making the wiki even have a kind of agressive look and will hurt the eye. The rusted light green we now have was chosen for various good reasons, easy on the eye and let’s you focus on the pages and its content. Also, the current background is the same as on the [www.bethsoft.com official Bethesda] site. I’ve uploaded a suggestion, with just the bottle cap (I like we still have a round logo, similar to the previous one, still a completely different item). We need to keep it as simple and clear as we can, so the only thing left is the bottle cap. If you want to play around with it, I’d say use the Bethesda site colors, they go best with things related to Fallout. Maybe still something could be done with fading out coloring. I want to hold on the the original FALLOUT WIKI name, so I left that in place. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 21:21, January 10, 2012 (UTC)

Jspoel's suggestion

Hey there Jspoel. You raise some good points.
  • In response to too much red space around "The Fallout Wiki": what do people think of making the background white instead? Or would that still be too much negative space?
  • In response to too much red in general: this could also be a problem. Perhaps I could mute the color, in order to make the designs more agreeable? What does everyone think?

71.225.62.38 23:14, January 10, 2012 (UTC) (Doc Incognito)

You know that I've liked everything you've posted so far. To me, I doubt anyone will be able to provide as much help as you have in the past week. Of course, we have to respect the admin's decisions, as with the rest of the community. But whatever you come up with, I'll be happy with. 114.77.77.5 23:27, January 10, 2012 (UTC)
You mean replacing the rusted light green color at both sides with white? The white would fill way too much of the page. You can give it a try with muting/fading the red color though. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 23:28, January 10, 2012 (UTC)
When I suggested looking at using styling cues from the Nuka-cola machines to change the look of the side spaces, I was thinking a very light, washed out tone. I also agree that too much bright red/bright anything would take away from the white background make it very hard on the eyes, but a very light, almost transparent graphic showing the bottles in the door and the coin slot/mechanism might look ok and tie in the Nuka theme while adding a little personality to the page presentation. I personally think all of the reds should be pretty washed out/faded. Like a Nuka-cola machine left outside for 100-200 years after the apocalypse. Also, I think it would be cool as hell if when you loaded the main page a real short sound file playing the geiger counter clicking (ala Nuka-break) played, but that's just me The Gunny 380px-USMC-E7 svg 23:41, January 10, 2012 (UTC)
@114: Heh, thanks!
@Jspoel: I meant replacing the red with white where the banner graphic says, "The Fallout Wiki". I also realized another possible solution to filling up that blank region: the only reason that there's so much negative space is because I can't scale up the Fallout logo very much without it pixelating. However, if I were to replace the Fallout logo with the script that says "NukaPedia", I could fill most of that empty red. What do you guys think?
@Gunny: That makes a lot of sense. I'll tone down the reds going forward, as well as for final submissions of these graphics. Question for all: should the bottlecap in the banner be an exception to this rule, and be brighter red than the other graphics?
Thanks again for all your comments and support. 71.225.62.38 00:02, January 11, 2012 (UTC) (Doc Incognito)
Sorry to be a pest, is there any chance we could see the logo on the page again, with "The Fallout Wiki" styling from the all-red, but with the red around those words removed? Agent c 03:33, January 11, 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry, it's not a bother. I'll be back with that in a moment; first, here's the beginning of work on the Nuka-Cola bottle that will go inside the vending machine: Doc Incognito 04:09, January 11, 2012 (UTC)

I'm half tempted to make a Wiki that we can use to test out all these backgrounds/logos. That way, we can see how they look, maybe make a news post directing users there, and ask them how they feel. I'd hate for all your work to go to waste. 114.77.77.5 02:03, January 12, 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea to me. After all, this is the community's decision; why not gather wider feedback?
Doc Incognito 02:40, January 12, 2012 (UTC)
Cool. It's settled then. If you complete the backgrounds, I'll start up a test wiki and ask Agent c and Kingclyde to ask the community how they feel. 114.77.77.5 02:55, January 12, 2012 (UTC)
Gotcha. Given my current trajectory, I would guess that I can finish the background in seven days' time, at the very soonest. I anticipate that I'll have some time this weekend to plow through the background.
Doc Incognito 03:00, January 12, 2012 (UTC)

A note about the bottle: I don't think my original Photoshop approach is going to work, because I don't know how to create the illusion of roundness that the bottle would need. Instead, I'm switching to 3DSMax to work out a 3D model. It may take longer than a Photoshop would, but I think it will work better. I'll update you guys soon with progress. Doc Incognito 02:57, January 12, 2012 (UTC)

Well, here's the beginning of the bottle. Don't mind the darker grey areas in this render; that's where the individual shapes intersect, and I'll be removing those intersections tomorrow. I also created a red platform behind it, for kicks.

Doc Incognito 04:18, January 12, 2012 (UTC)
Hey guys. I don't have anything tonight, but now that the weekend is coming, I hope to have enough time to plow through the bottle 3D model, its texture, and the rest of the Nuka-Cola vending machine background. I'll stop in tomorrow with progress.
Doc Incognito 03:57, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

Looking forward to it. Judging by the public opinion as stated on today's Wiki digest, it would appear yours is the most popular, especially because of its similarity to the original logo. 114.77.77.5 03:59, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

Awesome! Doc Incognito 05:07, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

Hey all, the Nuka-Cola bottle is done! I had an idea or two on how to add depth to my original Photoshop version, and I think it doesn't look quite as depth-less as I feared it would. As always, all constructive critiques and recommendations are welcome; enjoy the soda (vague pun intended)! Doc Incognito 04:40, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

Nuka-Cola Bottle2

Oh, and I have a question for Agent c: when and where will final submissions be submitted? I want to be sure that I have everything made and tweaked in time, and that all of my submissions are in the same place when the time comes to vote. Doc Incognito 04:47, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

If I know anything about 3D model making software (which I should, but I probably don't), you might need to change the direction of the lighting. If the light were coming from in front or behind the bottle, it might give it more depth. But I'll leave it up to you. 04:51, January 14, 2012 (UTC)
This wasn't produced using 3D modeling software (I kind of backpedaled on that approach to try this out), but I'll fiddle with the gradients to make the light come from off-center. Thanks for the input!
Doc Incognito 19:25, January 14, 2012 (UTC)
I was planning on having a vote on this page, but thats clearly not going to work anymore. There will be a seperate forum page. I'm thinking for round one (the multi-vote) that a representative logo will be picked for the vote. For round 2, an image of it on a mock page will be required. 212.69.51.63 04:59, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

Ah, Agent. Getting a feel for the anon lifestyle, I see. 114.77.77.5 05:01, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

Hello all, back with the soda and a slightly modified vending machine. Is the soda more depth-ful this time around? Also, I recall hearing support for toning down the color of the vending machine: is this hue appropriately muted? Doc Incognito 20:18, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

NukaPedia Background PNG2
Yep, I definitely see what you mean about the colour being less aggressive. It doesn't draw the eye away from the page. The bottles look better too with the shadow behind them. All that's left is for the left side of the vending machine, then I'll start up a wiki and add all the components. Remember, the due date is Friday. 114.77.77.5 00:17, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
Friday sounds like a perfectly reasonable timeframe. By Thursday, I will post the final versions of the Bottle Cap Logo, Banner Bottle Cap Logo, Background, and Favicons, in such a way that they will be easily retrievable. Doc Incognito 01:00, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Edit: 114, if I were to upload all of the listed assets by Wednesday at 10:00 EST, would it be possible to test them on a wiki page in order to see if they are formatted correctly, leaving time to correct any formatting strangeness?

Doc Incognito 01:38, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
That depends. I'm in Australia, and I don't know the last thing about what time it is in other parts of the world. But if you leave a message on my talk page here, I'll start up a wiki when I log in and test it all out. Then I'll contact you on your talk page and we can figure out the details. 114.77.77.5 01:45, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
That would be very much appreciated, 114, thanks. I'll finish everything as soon as possible, then send you a message when all is ready.

Doc Incognito's Final Call For Suggested Edits[]

Hey there everyone. I now have finished or nearly finished versions of my assets, and I'm looking to incorporate one last bout of user input. Here are the questions I have, and I appreciate any and all constructive answers that you can offer:

  • There are three favicons that I've created; if I have to choose one for final submissions, which one should it be?
  • There are two banner / bottle cap logos; which do you prefer, the all-white background or the red background?
  • What general advice do you have for improving specific images? (Especially the Vending Machine Background, that one needs more work than the others, I think.)

And here comes the massive art dump.

Well for my two cents I would say i don't think the background really says much about what this page is your art appears very clean very crisp yet this is a fallout wiki and though they have a nice texture behind them its not very decayed not very post apocalyptic not that it has to be but what there besides the word FALLOUT says what this is about. Make sure the art displays the message without needing the words, words are great but the art should speak for itself. Also for tiling purposes on the background image you need to consider how it would tile both horizontally and vertically based on screen size. Anyway I dig it but think it could use a little bit to enhance its identity. but good job. I would also look at this for inspiration as nuka cola would be something of the old world it would look very worn old and rusty [1] --Sirota554 03:04, January 16, 2012 (UTC)
May I just add, the following is a link of a wiki created to test all of Doc's designs. If you were curious (as I was) to see how his work would look had it been implemented, you can check it out.
[2]
Now, mind you, this is merely in an experimental phase and if it were chosen it would be tailored to fit the wiki. As you can see at the moment, things are not exactly perfect. But if you ask me, he's done a damn good job. May I stress that all you see on that page is property of Doc Incognito, and I take no credit for it. 114.77.77.5 03:51, January 16, 2012 (UTC)

I must say, that you've done a great job, but I still have some considerations to share. The background of the banner saying 'the Fallout wiki' is not proportioned properly. The writing seems way too small and leaves large areas of 'wasted' background. Maybe you did like that in order for the entire writing being able to be there in the fontsize or whatever, but now it very much feels smallish and insignificant. The current Fallout font is doing the exact opposite, it's impressive (I guess also a reason why they used it a lot more than just quests in Fallout New Vegas compared to FO3), so this 'minimizing' of the impression the font leaves should be dealt with. Either cut some of the banner on the sides or write it in a new way. Besides that, I like it, only I'm a bit afraid the 'waning' effect on the red (which works as a strong colour, so it can be very difficult to make red look 'waned') looks way to 'bleached' and not 'rusted'. Some brownish, corroded elements could really do the trick I believe. Once again I must refer to the banner above your (now very long) contribution, since it gives some of that corroded effect, but like your banner (and unlike your bottlecap to the left) looks too whitish and bleached. The colour red is always working best if it's intense and there is some kind of saturation involved, and not bleached down, since then it'll just look pinkish and loose most of it's 'oomf'. So basically, the colour scheme should be more corroded and not bleached, and properly proportioned. (Btw. a sun's 'bleaching' effect is very realistic, yet it's one of those things that doesn't work very well aestethically, and therefore should follow the golden 'rule of cool'; explosions and sound in space etc.)ZappaBusinessMonkey 08:23, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

Entrant version(s) (see Nukapedia bottle entry)[]

Just on this one in regards to the flavour suggestion; Because of the big difference in colours here and the text fonts to the right, I think there is an argument here that the green and the orange caps could be considered separate entries to each other, or as flavours of the same design (and I'm happy to hear others opinions on this below - however whilst I'm still considering it over, I think if the the Orange cap were being combined with the Doctor's entry as per YouTube's mashup, that entry would likely have to be considered as a flavour of the Orange cap. Agent c 03:52, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

You've done a fantastic job on this bottle cap, and you are worthy of commendation for your work. Out of curiosity, how did you manage to create such profound depth for the bottle cap?
Doc Incognito 23:32, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't call it profound just shadows and highlights pretty much. the textures and photoshop effects while not visible to a great degree at the smaller size do also help. --Sirota554 02:44, January 16, 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps I should have said "pronounced". But wow, you got all of that perspective and all of those divets through Photoshop alone? Color me impressed.
Doc Incognito 03:24, January 16, 2012 (UTC)
I did also use illustrator a bit, but as a painter and graphic designer depth is not too hard to create. It just requires understanding light.--Sirota554 03:44, January 16, 2012 (UTC)

I could definitely see that green logo with the red glow around it as a winner. If there was a vote, I'd put it in second place after Doc Incognito's. 114.77.77.5 07:59, January 16, 2012 (UTC)

Some things are amazing, like the brown/reddish bottlecap, but I really don't get this whole limegreen idea blossoming several places. Limegreen is a fun colour by itself, but it's really difficult to implement to please aestethic looks. That said, these contributions only make me want to see you graphic wonderpeeps work together. Could the brownish/corroded look and the bottlecap itself be implemented in the otherwise very clean Doc Incognito palette? When I think Nuka-Cola in general, I just see these corroded, brownish white/red colourschemes, which each of you have shown partially. (The entrace over Doc's did blend these two in his banner, but the red was simply not saturated enough and just looked bleached and therefore almost 'pinkish'. Anyway. I'd LOVE some collaboration between the graphics instead of ending up choosing the 'least' problematic. Especially you and Doc have incredible entries, they should be thought more through together in my opinion. But not anything limeish. :D ZappaBusinessMonkey 08:37, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

The limegreen was my take on making it fit a few different themes post-apocalyptic in the worn rustiness, nuclear in the greenish hue, and Nuka cola in the bottle cap. I felt that alone the bottlecaps didn't really speak about what the site is. I keep saying that but what I mean is the site is not a Nuka Cola wiki. Nuka Cola is part of the design but besides that what says fallout. Its more of a Post Nuclear theme in keeping with the radiation, vats of goo, bright green irradiated style. --Sirota554 08:54, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
I understand and think it's the right approach to the site. It's definately not a COLA site. :D Therefore I'm a big fan of seeing some corrosion and attrition being used as the platform for the site. It's just a question of how to implement it properly.ZappaBusinessMonkey 09:10, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

I think with the rest of the image being so big, when its put into the space required Nukapedia is going to look very small.. But I think there's some good ideas here. Agent c 05:07, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

I like your logo and it's really well done. I would suggest making the text in the blackbox a lighter shade so it's abit more readible, perhaps even reverting the background and the text the yellow wouldn't clash with the green reversal I'd think. Just some things. Overall I like it.--Carinth 18:23, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

I know what you mean, but I really wanted to make it just a tad bit dim. Still completely readable, I just wanted to make sure you read "NUKAPEDIA" before you read the subtitle. Sigpic small 19:32, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

Hey I hope you don't mind but i saw this logo and It kind of inspired me to make a similar one I really dig it though. --Sirota554 18:58, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

Nice effects and animation, although it looks like more of a television signal than a computer output. What software are you using, btw? Did you draw that on your own? Sigpic small 19:32, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

Yeah it was a television it actually started as an old logo I used to use with a band I was in, but i just used photoshop. and Yeah i made that one on my own. --Sirota554 19:44, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

You just type what you want into the preview box and it gives you some Fallout-looking font. 114.77.77.5 06:41, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

Got some problems with this... Is this a modified version of an actual coke product... If so, I think there are trademark issues. Slightly less of a problem is the top left corner, it betrays its european roots - 0,35L - in the states the Decimal indicator used is the period (.) not the comma; also they use classic imperial measurements, not metric Litres... Would have to be changed to Oz. Agent c 00:38, January 13, 2012 (UTC)
Would be changed by either yours truly, me, I or somebody else entirely. To that point, nay, this be not a coca cola logo but rather a little something cooked up by a Fallout fan [Not using Coke, bar tag I don't know, but everyfink else comes from mixed range of products) and modified to the extent of fitting it to Nukapedia by you guys. --Mr. Youtube 02:54, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

No offense but that is kinda taking someone elses work [6] I can tell mainly because if you had created the original you would have edited the text or redo the background behind pedia, what you did here was just cover the Cola with a 255 red blob on top of a texture and write Pedia on top of that. Other than that i dont think it works Nuka Pedia the words by itself in a coca cola style makes this seem like a wiki of some sort of soft drink or version of coke, there isn't anything there that would say this is a fallout wiki.--Sirota554 10:20, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
This is an interesting point... on the face of this, unless you're also the owner of the linked original YouTube, I think we might have to exclude this entry... But it does beg the question as to how much is borrowing/inspiration, and where the line is with plagarism. eg - in my nuka news digest, I've combined an old NBC logo, with the letters changed, and the Smooth Talker vault boy.. To me that was okay, because we've created a new expresion of an idea. The VaultBoys used as parts of other entries are okay, because they're creating something new. This one, I don't think quite meets that grade. Does anyone else have any thoughts? Agent c 21:32, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
There is very little change. It's like me taking the Mona Lisa, painting a moustache on her, and selling it as my own artwork. Okay, so that did happen once before (Marcel Duchamp's LHOOQ), but the point still stands. It's a minor difference with no credit given to the original artist. 114.77.77.5 21:36, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Funny idea, but sadly not executed well. The font, fontsize, reddish-hue, potential TM issues and obvious edits are not executed well. Had it been more polished, it could have a chance though. ZappaBusinessMonkey 08:44, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

Then it came to me, Sirota's bottlecap I see as undoubtedly better than Doc's, but I see Doc's design as undoubtedly better than Sirota's. Why not? I put them together, that is all I did, I guess if this one is chosen I at least get the credit of putting it together, but Incognito, Sirota, this is your creation, I am simply the agent. FalloutWikiSirotaDoc

Alright, now, Mr. Youtube. You've uploaded many logos since this has opened, and all of them have looked like quickly made photoshop images that you made up on the spot in about a minute. I don't want to be the bad guy here, but honestly, you cannot just keep uploading these badly made logos in an attempt that maybe one of them might get through. This last logo is proof that you're merely trying to gain favour from the community by getting two logos that other people worked hard on and throwing them together. Stop talking about yourself like your god's gift to the artistic world, stop making these terrible logos, and stop it with the egotistical rants that you begin every sentence with. Go back and actually think hard about your logo, and come up with something that is original and that actually has any artistic value whatsoever because I, along with others, am getting sick of this. 114.77.77.5 02:59, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

I think maybe you're a little harsh there 114; but there is some truth in the sentiment at least... This is definitely a quality, not quantity contest.
I don't want to discourage anyone from posting/entering - if someone of low skill (not saying that anyone here is or isn't) enters an entry that has a great concept behind it, well, this is a wiki and we're supposed to be about collaboration and making them better - but there does have to be some limits as this is a contest after all.
I think its going to be better for everyone if entrants keep to a few ideas that have been well thought through and developed, rather than enter more. Entrants will be better served by picking a design or two of those you've come up with and making them even better. I'm not including an official maximum entry limit, but I hope all entrants will see the wisdom in this. (To be honest, an entrant with multiple entries wasn't something I considered when I was thinking about how this process would work -and retrospective changes to the contest aren't really fair).
When it comes to taking someone else's deign here, I think its best that entrants don't use/modifiy/include each others images without consent of the original entrant - if someone inspires you to so something original thats similar, thats fine; if the entrant agrees you can make a change or modify something because you have a skill they don't, fine; Taking without consent - not okay. Although the Creative Commons license may give you the right to use someone else's image, its still polite to get permission first. Agent c 03:14, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
Sorry about my hasty outburst there, Agent, but being an avid art enthusiast it ruffles my feathers when I see things like this. The least the uploader can do is show the slightest modesty. 114.77.77.5 03:18, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
No Problem. I think we now need to consider 1) if this entry is going to be included, and 2) what its relationship is to the entries that its based on. For the first point, I consider Doktor and Sirota joint "owners" of this entry; if either of you do not wish this version to be considered, then the second point is moot. On the second, I'm not comfortable with the position this entry would leave other entries in - just how distinct does each entry need to be? I'm going to take a couple of days to consider this, and I encourage comments here. In the meantime if either Doktor or Sirota don't give consent, then this entry is out.Agent c 03:30, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Two things one I don't think they work together well doktor's bottle cap and background are linked together they match more color wise, the same with my cap and background. Two i don't think that the first rusty bottle cap i entered would be too viable when shrunk.
After testing out a few options I think that there should probably be a transparent background or the chosen logo's background should be the color or texture for the entire header area. For a 250 by 65 area my first bottle cap is not viable the text is not very legible at that size and the vault boy appears as just a black blur, the second bottle cap i entered was designed for that size.
I am not gonna consent though sorry I don't think they each complement each other color wise and even with my correctly sized caps i could make it work color wise which i attempted in a small test but i think that mine and doktors logos should remain seperate as their own piece im not opposed to collab if the doktor wants but this image above doesnt work and i dont want the two designs just thrown together. --Sirota554 10:40, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
I agree, these two designs do not coexist particularly well; in spite of the greater third dimensionality of Sirota's bottle cap, the conflict of color and shape cannot be overcome. I, too, do not wish to see Mr. YouTube's mashup entered.

Jspoel's view on the progression[]

I've taken some time again to update myself on the the progression and I think Doc Incognito's logo still is the best entry. There's some talk about changing the background to some color of red, picturing a vending machine with bottles but if I have anything to say about it, that's not going to happen. Way and way too distracting. One of the powers of this wiki is its current green tiled background which is very easy on the eyes (same style as the bethsoft game company site). Btw, type Fallout in Google and they will be the number one showing up, so when people see the same color here it's very familiar and related. Also, Nuka is chosen but it's not what Fallout is all about and it's not near as strong as The Vault, which is a solid brick wall name and has everything to do with Fallout. Nuka-(Cola) is just an item which happens to appear in all Fallout-games. So I'm not in favor of plastering it all over the wiki, especially the front page. The power of a logo is its simplicity, and my added example above (Doc's bottlecap, Fallout 1's Fallout Wiki next to it) is one of the most simple and least distracting one. Even Doc's added red around the words Fallout Wiki is in too much contrast with the environment I feel. I even think my own example (for which all credit goes to Doc of course) is a bit too red. It could be a bit more red like the Nuka-Cola bottle example I've posted below. Let's say a bit more soft and weathered red. Would need some experimenting. As favicon I was thinking about a colored Vault Boy, the one in Sirota's bottlecap. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 21:13, January 17, 2012 (UTC) Rusted red

Whats your opinion on my last update the green cap with the transparent background? and I agree that unless the background has to change this works, It shouldn't detract from the users reading the site. I also am not sure if we can edit the css for the wikia site so for these backgrounds the nuka cola machine wouldn't work it wouldn't tile well but i don't know maybe a dull rusted metal in red or something like the desert i added here [[7]] could work? --Sirota554 21:56, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
Cap'n J, I was wondering what you (and others) might think about a tiled background with a cracked earth kind of look, like the background in the first of Sirota's entries? I understand your points about the current background, but I also thought the wasteland look of the cracked earth might be interesting to consider. I think this might go well with Sirota's designs. The Gunny 380px-USMC-E7 svg 23:37, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

( I've combined a few logos. I like the weathered/rusted look of Sirota's bottle cap and it's nearly the same brown color (meaning it blends well in) as a main color on the bethsoft site. You think you can try and make that brown color a bit lighter, Sirota? The same as on the bethsoft site.

Jspoel, take a look at this. Doc Incognito and I were testing out some of his designs on a separate Wiki. The favicon, logo and background have all bee implemented and we've tailored them to fit within a reasonable margin. I just thought it might be easier for you to make up your mind if you had a visual source. Any thoughts? 114.77.77.5 23:48, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

For me, its right on the edge of being okay, and being a bit "noisy" - taking eye attraction away from the content.Agent c 23:59, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
I had already seen it. My opinion about the red background was based on it. It's way too noisy, can't you see that? Compare it to the current background, what would you rather look at for even 10 minutes being a regular user/visitor. (I'm looking at it for hours, which would be undoable with the red color). Jspoel Speech Jspoel 00:08, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

You have a point. It shouldn't distract users. But I must say, the effort that Doc Incognito has put in is brilliant. Also, what do you think of the Favicon? I think it looks pretty good. 114.77.77.5 02:49, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, the background does have a lot going on. :/ After the dust has cleared from voting, I'd be more than willing to contribute a simpler background, if the community approves. Perhaps one that just involves white, faded metal, like the white bar in the middle of the current background? I feel like the random pattern and light color would be easy on the eyes. Doc Incognito 03:56, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

Edit: on second thought, sooner would probably be better than later. So, what do you guys think: should I pull the plug on the current background, and in about 24 hours, create and upload a simpler white-gray metal background? Doc Incognito 03:59, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
At this point, it's all in Jspoel's hands. I could drop him a line, or you could ask him at his talk page. 114.77.77.5 04:41, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
114 my problem with using an image like that beyond distraction and the fact that it really doesnt enforce the idea of a post apocalyptic game more some sort of soda site, is that it does not tile. If we could alter the css on wikia yeah it could work better but if you look at wikia you made and zoom out a bit you see that the image doesn't expand its just a light blue solid color. --Sirota554 07:55, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
Hm, that's a shame. I got the template from Wikia Community Central. Well, either way, I'm sure Doc is glad for the input, just as much as I am. 114.77.77.5 07:59, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
Like Jpol says, it's way too confusing. I can see why the 'cola' effect should be toned down. Red is a very difficult colour to control, and to be safe we should rather go with less, than more. On the other hand the corrosion of metal, could - i my opinion - be what could tone down the reddishness of Doc's input. If it were more corroded in some areas it wouldn't come off as a COLA site, but as something which is corroded and unkept - something postapocalyptic. I might see the current background being used as long as it's 'greenish' hue was removed. It could be more reddish-brownish/corroded instead. I've written a lot of comments around now, so I won't repeat myself, but a point I need to make clear though, is that a strong red is possible to have, but only in considerate amounts, an example would be using the corrosion to diminish the amount of red on the site. 'Bleaching' the red so it might look pinkish has a possible wrong effect on the red we could be using. We need colours that are pleasing to watch for longer periods of time and therefore toning it down will help, but at the same time just keeping the same green colourscheme looks quircky and 'copied'. We should just tone it down properly.ZappaBusinessMonkey 09:00, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

I'd just like to point out there's no requirement for you to have a background ready for the 20th... Please don't feel like you have to do this by that day... If you've got the time and its not too much of a bother, I'm happy to see it, but I just want to stress its not strictly required...Agent c 12:50, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

It's not a bother at all; tonight I will put together a white-gray metallic background with some brownness and corrosion; if people aren't in favor of that once they see it, I'll try a toned-down, more heavily corroded red background. See you guys in ~12 hours. Doc Incognito 16:02, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
Gotta admire the dedication! And thanks for listening and taking time to read the long babbles I come up with! :D ZappaBusinessMonkey 21:16, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
Happy to help, it's what I'm here for. I'm also in the process of fixing the banner to say "Fallout" in larger text, with the help of 114. Doc Incognito 03:13, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

Here's the new background in situ.
I browned it quite a bit, so it's not exactly white. What do you guys think? Doc Incognito 03:13, January 19, 2012 (UTC)

I dig it. Not too distracting, but still works with the logo. 114.77.77.5 03:20, January 19, 2012 (UTC)
Doc you need to make a version of that smaller that tiles, because at larger screen resolutions you see the border but if you were to make that metallic style tile it would be best also i would say go crazy man make it rusted and corroded not distractingly but fitting. --Sirota554 19:01, January 19, 2012 (UTC)
You can see the border? I tested the image on both a 1280x800 screen and a 1920x1080 screen, and the background seemed to fit perfectly. Did I just not look closely enough? Doc Incognito 21:48, January 19, 2012 (UTC)
well the image is 2000 by 1000 so you can see the edge above that res but instead of just continually as resolutions get larger making the image bigger till its blurred as heck just use a small image that tiles well such as this the same metal modified quickly to make it pretty much seamlessly tile. Background tile

--Sirota554 22:09, January 19, 2012 (UTC)
