Forums: Index > Wiki discussion > Notable Loot Policy: True Police Stories

Hello everybody, and thanks to Skire for directing me here. The site's lovely for information, but I admit I do sometimes get a bit lost about where the best place to bring up certain questions is.

So it's my understanding that at this time, True Police Stories do not count as Notable Loot, because of a previous policy decision regarding Skill magazines in general. I'd like to propose an amendment to that. Unlike the other Skill magazines, True Police Stories would appear to have a finite quantity with fixed locations, and they don't appear to be stocked by Merchants either, although being a console user I can't 100% confirm that on my own. Yes, you can get a theoretically infinite number of them with the Voracious Reader perk, but you can also get a theoretically infinite number of Nuka-Cola Victories with Nuka Chemist, and those are still considered Notable, as I think they should be: if it takes a Perk slot to make something not-rare, and a DLC Perk at that, it's still rare. Another example would be Thin red paste/Thick red paste: extremely easy to obtain with Them's Good Eatin', but still Notable Loot.

The obvious first step here would be to dig into the GECK and make sure that there are no vendor lists that contain them. If that is indeed the case, we can then discuss an exemption to the policy based on the above mentioned criteria. GECK users? I can check later tonight, but if someone can find out first, that would be dandy. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 20:26, February 25, 2014 (UTC)
Hey, it just occurred to me, while that's being done, how hard would it be to kill two birds with one stone and check on exactly which merchants sell Skill magazines in the first place? I've wanted to add a list of those to the Skill magazines page for a few weeks but I haven't been positive I've found everyone, and checking the individual merchants pages has revealed enough inconsistencies that I think that's a project in itself. As far as selling the magazines go, it's not just a matter of them selling Aid items, at least, although that may be a prerequisite. Anyway, beaucoup merci if it can be done. Bit of a reminder, this is still needing a GECK user to check on it, please. What we've got to have is if True Police Story copies turn up at all in Merchant inventories. The thing I asked for above is a side-point. Thanks! Aristatide (talk) 03:25, March 9, 2014 (UTC)

If the magazines are a finite resource, then I support them becoming notable loot. If they are an infinite resource, then no. And last time I checked, because of the OWB DLC, this particular brand of magazines are just as infinite of a resource as the others. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 20:31, February 25, 2014 (UTC)

What aspect of OWB makes them infinite? Aristatide (talk) 02:31, February 26, 2014 (UTC)
It's not Old World Blues, it's the perk you mentioned above, Voracious Reader, which was added in Lonesome Road, which makes all skill magazines craftable. So, that answers that. However, that then brings up the Nuka-Cola issue, since another perk, Nuka Chemist, makes Nuka-Cola Victory infinite as well. We need some form of consistency in this, be it removing any item infinitely craftable from notable loot, or re-adding the skills magazines as notable loot again. Okay, I just worried I'd missed something in OWB that made my argument flawed. But yes, that was sort of the point I was going for: we've got a major inconsistency here--although I'm still waiting to hear from a GECK user if copies of TPS really don't spawn in mailboxes etc/aren't ever in merchant inventories, because we do know for certain all the other magazines do. If they definitely don't, either all items that are non-rare because of Perks need to stop being Notable (I listed two examples in my opener), or True Police Stories needs to be added back in, and just True Police Stories. All of the other magazines definitely do turn up in sufficient quantities not to be Notable, Perk or no. I wound up with 45 Today's Physicians without even trying particularly hard once. I think that's an appropriate course of action. The rest of the skill magazines are infinite by default as they appear in inventories, whereas the Nuka-Cola's do not (to my knowledge). I do think we should reconsider the Thick Red Paste as those are relatively common without the perk as well. FollowersApocalypseLogo A Follower  Talk  05:08, February 26, 2014 (UTC)
