I am an Oblivion player and haven't played Fallout. I may be getting Fallout 3 soon and I'm new to the forum. From my research on the game, I've predicted I'll like it better than Oblivion. So could you Fallout 3 players help out a soon-to-be newb, and tell me some things bout it? Such as how cool and fun it is compared to Oblivion. How annoying/ tedious the new repair system is. (I'm not sure if it is annoying or tedious, just seems more so than repair hammers.) How good it is for roleplaying, both pretending and normal gameplay. Idk, just other things about how much I'll love or be annoyed by Fallout 3...
I'd say skip Fallout 3, and get Fallout: New Vegas instead when it comes out in a couple weeks. --Kris 22:14, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
- better on all accounts compared to oblivion. the repair system is easy enough to understand, it does not have as many annoying or repetetive elements as oblivion. The environment is significantly more diverse. You picked a good time to start playing i would recommend getting the gold version to make sureyou have all dlc. And when you have time spare the extra ten dollars or the original games (twenty all together) if you have a local bestbuy i know they sell the original in their own boxes, you might be able to get the trilogy that includes tactics. I wouldnt worry to much about story dependency from the originals though not too many references in the third, i would recommend playing them before new vegas as it seesms a little more dependent. I wouldnt recommend tactics at all butthe story is pretty nice, gameplay and continuity errors drag it down though. ralok 22:17, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
i'll look online and game stores and stuff. thanks Ralok. youve helped a lot. hey i found in Oblivion, the scroll duplicating glitch was VERY useful for roleplaying. any Mega-exploitable glitches like that you know of? I'm gonna try not to talk too much. I read on forum things they don't like you saying too much unnecessary stuff. But I think I'll get the original without all the dlc. I would like more weapons and stuff but I'm too broke to buy the $50 version. Anyway, how fun and cool will it be with NO DLC?
- I managed to snag a copy of gold for twenty bucks, and i hear its fairly common at that prices these days. Without dlc the game is pretty fun, with it its just as fun but there is more places to go and more to do. its a good time to start playing because after about eight months of playing 3 you will be ready to purchase new vegas :P. And dont trust what you read on forums about this game, because there is alot of negative hate towards this game because f the juxtaposition beetween it and the originals. Here is a hint buddy dont refer to fallout 3 in any context as "the original" that wil lget some peoples fires going. ralok 22:44, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
At Walmart, the only place i seen the game, it's 20 for normal version and 50 for game of year. where can i find goty cheaper? i'd love that.
- i got mine at meijer, i would wait until new vegas comes out the price might go down once that happens. I would save up money, but you can buy the basic just be aware the main plot sees massive improvements if you have dlc, and you will have to buy each dlc if you dont get GOTY. Maybe you can get it at gamestop, i would definitly shop around if i was you.but then you waste gas. . . is a loose loose loose situation D: ralok 22:56, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
- Yes dont bother putting any skill points into your big gun skill slot. ANY, you see its possible to get one hundred if you put 60 points in all of your skills, because skill books make up the difference (100 is the cap) dont bother with big guns, because the only skill book in the game that respawns is 30 handy flamethrower recipes, thus you can get a hundred just farming the bethesda ruins (place were book spawns) it is a pain but it helps oyu level up and get you other skils to sxt to farm the guys it spawns on aswell. So bethesda ruins (coincidence) justgo to thatplace every 2-3 days and you will have an epic character in no time. ralok 23:18, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
how easily am I gonna make money? and find ammo? and i've been reading forums, some people running into 11 centaurs at once. or a bunce of overlords and enclave. sounds more filled than Oblivion. i know F3 don't have the stupid levelling of Oblivion, so how dangerous is this gonna be?
- You just need to know were to go and what people to meet. Its a dangerous world in the capital wastland, some places have more mutants than others. Old olney is infested with deathclaws an the city has way to many super mutants. I am not going to lie it will take a while to get money and ammo. But not too long, there are good missions right near the beginning of the game. And if you dont install broken steel you dont have to worry about overlords. A hint with them though get nice and personal, this applies to all super mutants, they dont turn to fast run around them with a melee weapon and you can get them good. You wont have to hard of a time i think, just remember when it feels like you are struggling to survive (which is doesnt usually) then you know the game is working. Plus there is a really good exploit involving the outcasts which can rope you unlimited money and experience points :D its difficult though took me a lot of tries to get it to work. ralok 23:44, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
thanx a lot for answering my many many questions... i would annoy myself if I were you. i think I'll be a melee fighter anyway so that strategy sounds good. How good is the character creation? like, how diverse and specific can it be?
- Its . . . dissapointing in variety, but strangely i felt far more invested in my fallout 3 character than my oblivion character. And i think it is because they are not as hideous as oblivion characters (some are) and the outfits are pretty standardized you will see alot of guys wearing the same thing. But for some reason you will feel special wearing it, its difficult to explain. the faux survival feeling helps i guess, plus you play your character up from youth. And companions are better than oblivion companions . . . or just singular companion (stupid skinned hound). ralok 23:58, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
i'm gonna like having Dogmeat. oh, how dangerous/ inevitable is radiation? (i know it can be healed) and how many different kinds of creatures and humans am i gonna see without dlc? i always wish there was more monsters in Oblivion.
- DLC doesn really introduce much that is new, trogs and swamp folk i guess are new and aliens but they are just like normal people. Radiation is something you accumulate easily, more you have the worsse your abilities are. slwoly it will kill you, purge regularly at a doctor. OR purchase an item for your house and do it yourself. I dont think there are actually more monsters than oblivion . . . but you have to deal with other people very often and there are alot of different kinds of people. There is a decent variety. Want to hear something strange, i played oblivion for years, dozens of playthroughs, and i only ever encountered a land dreugh once . . . is that normal? ralok 00:12, October 5, 2010 (UTC)
- Land Dreughs only start appearing once you reach level 17, and even then they only have a 45% chance of appearing in certain areas. Hal10k 00:39, October 5, 2010 (UTC)
i've only seen 2-4 dreughs. i'm sure no more than 4. thanks for the help. youre awesome Ralok. if i have any more questions, i'll ask. i've looked on wikis and stuff, but it's been better talkin to a F3 player.
This is Dunmer999. can someone tell me how to put my signature at the end of my edits? Anyway i'm bidding on ebay today for Fallout 3. not sure if i'll get goty or regular. i spent the last 2 days reading blogs on Fallout 3. like the flawed karma system. (Every game with a karma system can't help but be flawed) and the other logical flaws. most people like to rant about Tenpenny Towers and Megaton's nuke. anyway the things that most intrigue me is when people talked about the Wasteland. i am so so so eager to see the destroyed DC. being a proud American, i just cant wait to feel the utter crushing pain from walking around DC and seeing the Lincoln Memorial and White House in ruins. i cant wait to see the hopeless dying mess humanity becomes. i want to ask from people who have played, WHAT IS IT LIKE IN THE CAPITAL WASTELAND? what's it gonna look, and feel, like? also, don't forget:How do i put my signature on my edits?
