Forums: Index > Wiki proposals and applications > Mass reconfirmation of inactive admins and moderators

With a possible announcement for Fallout 4 fast approaching it is very clear that we are going to need all hands on deck rather soon, however it is also important that we
A) have hands that are actually active
B) know how many hands we actually have.
Issue is that while we have a lot of admins and moderators/chat moderators (hence forth to be refereed to as moderators collectively) many of them are, for whatever reason, not exactly active. In this case activity has been defined as either
A) editing more than a couple of times a month, over the course of a few months
B) appearing in chat more than a couple of times a month, over the course of a few months
Inactivity isn't a matter of not making edits to articles, but a general lack of being here. While I generally have no real issue with this the approach of a possible Fallout 4 has made me think that something kind of needs to be done and personally I feel that a mass vote of no confidence and removal of rights may be the best way.

This is not a case of punishing older admins and moderators, but instead to make sure we have a clean slate of sorts ready for new users. The fact is these old admins and moderators are not any help if they're not here, but having so many inactive admins and moderators can make it harder for new users to get those positions through claims of "we already have enough". It is also important to make sure that any admins and moderators we do have are up to date with our polices, which users who have been inactive for the past few months may not be.

The following are users who haven't been active enough (or at all in some cases) to justify holding on to their rights.

The vote is on these users keeping their rights, so a "yes" is in support of them keeping their rights and a "no" is in support of their removal. The reconfirmation of each user will be independent of the others, so even if one loses their rights another may keep theirs and vice versa.

The users in question have one week to make their cases before the vote is opened. JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 18:41, April 27, 2015 (UTC)

For NCR

I've been a continuously contributing user here on Nukapedia. For about 3 years, I've been dedicated to the people and pages on this site, and made friends. All my hard work finally paid off when I became a Moderator.

Lately school has taken a large chuck of my free time and I've been away. I've entered the chat throughout the year on occasion, not regularly though. I admit, Jasper and Neko's suspicion in me has ground. But I ask that you reconsider my removal. As summer approaches, I've been having more time to come here, and perfect timing, as E3 will surely have Fallout 4 news coming. By that time, my schooling will be over and I shall be in top form here.

All I ask is one more chance to prove that I haven't forgotten this wiki or it's necessities. You can even ask certain users that I have been around lately. Thanks, and hope to serve as your Moderator for a long time.--User ncr A Safe People is a Strong People! 23:33, April 27, 2015 (UTC)

Hello everyone.

I was asked to make a case here, presumably against a reconfirmation of my administrative rights. I won't do that, as to present a defense implies an wrongful act has being committed. I don't see myself as having done so, nor do I see a reconfirmation due to outstanding inactivity as such either. It is merely the act of examining the evidence (or lack thereof) of someone's activity within the wiki and evaluating if it has been excessive to the point you no longer consider their claim to rights as valid. That can be done simply by looking at the edit history of each person listed and asking yourself if it has been too little for too long. Your personal standard is yours to set and not mine to sway.

However, it would be inconsiderate of me to offer no explanation for the inactivity, so I'd like to take this opportunity to do so.

About a year ago a series of personality clashes, petty politicking, backroom gossiping, and general drama marred my experience here. I suppose most of you know or at least have a clue of what I am referring to so there is no need to dig that up. My point is that I felt the environment here in the wiki was becoming increasingly toxic and vitriolic, all the while the accumulated spite brewed unsaid. It was at a point I just had to vent it and had half a mind to go around a few users' pages and stating precisely, and in some cases, quite less than politely what my beefs with each of them were. But ultimately better judgement took reins. It would only make things worse and the cheap catharsis of washing dirty laundry in public wasn't worth causing trouble to the wiki I had dedicated the last four years to. I opted instead to simply remove myself for a while. Quietly and without note as it always irked me how people would often make a fuss when leaving. It always smacked me as misplaced attention-seeking. However in retrospect it was also somewhat uncaring of me to say absolutely nothing at all, specially to the people I consider friends but also to everyone in the wiki, as my position was earned and kept with the presumption of continued service and fulfilling of specific duties, and the wiki deserved to know I wasn't planing on performing those for a while. So for that I'd like apologize right now.

Anyways, at the time I meant it to be only a while, until things and myself cooled down. A couple months to half a year at most. For quite I some time now as some know I've been suffering from an injury which had been seeing a succession of complications which is still going on. Details aren't relevant here so suffice to say for the last year the only times I haven't been in pain are when I'm asleep or under the effect of anodynes, which I avoid to use as much as possible as they cause dependency. The pain is not anything excruciating or crippling, mind you, but it is constant and to say it leaves my mood cranky would be quite the understatement. That was part of why I kept postponing my return, as I wasn't sure if coming back feeling like this would be wise, considering the reason why I left in the first place. I browsed through during the beginning of December and frankly I saw quite a few things (which obviously I'm not going to unearth now) that made me think best to put off coming back a little more.

The other part is that since suffering this injury I had to take several leaves at work which meant that my productivity would have plummeted along with my career if I hadn't taken steps to work extra hard and make up for it. One of those steps being making a personal pledge to get rid of my computer for a year. It, and specially games, represented to many distractions, and when you're always feeling pain it can become too tempting to indulge yourself and lose track of things that are far more important. It's a medium that runs on escapism after all. Not having a computer means I have to edit from a mobile, which as anyone who tried can testify to, is goddamn awful. And not being able to play the games means I couldn't offer much either.

So that is the situation. Although I do intend to come back, my pledge expires only in June, so the situation is such that it won't change until then. I understand it is hardly encouraging or promising, but things are as they are. I have never been one to misrepresent my positions and I won't start now. Do I want to keep my rights and return to my previous duties? Yes, I do, otherwise I'd have resigned. But I also understand that my admin rights stand for the belief that I am someone the community trusts to represent them, and after my continued absence that trust and recognition might simply no longer exist. If that is the case then it's just how things turned out to be, and I will sincerely say I will not resent or begrudge those who vote to take them away.

I've been too busy to really pop in on the Wiki. Once activity picks back up I may or may not be back more often. I think I should probably have my rights removed until then, though. - Chris With no background 05:23, April 28, 2015 (UTC)

No case to plead from me. Feel free to take 'em. I don't see myself coming back in the near future; all the people I loved coming to the chat for have gone away - there's not much here for me now. I have no current desire to come back and use these rights. If/when Fallout 4 happens, maybe you'll see me again. Until then... VictorFaceMonitor Might I Say You're Looking Fit As a Fiddle! I had a feeling this one was coming around pretty soon. Well, what can I say? I would say I was decently active during the month of March, and while I can't prove it at all, I've still been sitting in on the chat making sure all conditions are normal. Yes, my editing activity and overall presence as an administrator have significantly dropped since October. Yes, I probably could've forced myself to put more time in. No, I'm not going to beg to keep my job. I will say this, though: I just completed the toughest 10 months of my life as I adjusted to the daily rigors of balancing academics, PT, and the military, let alone my hobbies such as working here. Having said that, I have 100% freedom starting a week or so from now (27 April) when I graduate (08 May), and one of my top priorities is to get back to the wiki. Am I going to be putting up 5,000 edits a month like I did at the beginning of 2014? Not immediately, anyways, but I'll be far beyond simply staying afloat to maintain a minimum activity level.

Your views of me or my activity level are solely yours, and I can't control that. All I can give you is my reasoning, and my word that I'll be back into form here very soon. Regardless of what happens with this vote, I'll still be here. Thank you for your consideration, and thank you to Jasper for calling these votes. They've been long overdue. Have a pleasant day. I fully intend to return to activity once it behooves me to do so - likely when an official announcement on Fallout 4 is finally made. I will not provide a defense or list of excuses beyond that - if the community believes my rights should be removed I will not challenge it, and it will not change my plans for activity regarding Nukapedia; I will return again regardless of holding admin rights. Hope everyone is doing well, and I look forward to returning to active contribution in the (hopefully) near future. FollowersApocalypseLogo A Follower  Talk  03:53, April 29, 2015 (UTC)

-Bleep-

Hi everyone,

Before I get to the reasoning behind my absence, I'm going to go ahead and make it clear that I do understand the purpose of this vote, and that I'm not going to attack the premise of removing admins/mods based on inactivity. People sometimes leave, and don't come back, people get really really preoccupied with something in their lives, and stop editing, and maybe they forget that they used to edit here, or lose their password, and just don't come back. When stuff like that happens, when users leave the wiki because they feel like the environment is no longer right for them, removing their rights becomes important. It frees up space for new editors that come in, especially that that are willing and able to learn.

So what are the reasons behind my absence? Well, I'd love to say it was simple, I'd love to say that I was indisposed with a single item but it's not quite that simple. The past academic year has been tough on me, I am a microbiology major, and I really started to get into my upper level 300 and 400 classes this past year. STEM majors, especially in the Engineering and Natural sciences take incredibly intense and demanding courses throughout the extent of their collegiate careers, but the Sophomore and Junior years are hands down the toughest. On top of this I was also working in a research lab, valuable experience that is integral to my future in my field as well as mentoring freshmen students as part of a living and learning program. The past two semesters, verbatum, have been roughly waking up, studying/going to class, going to the lab, coming home and studying more, maybe fit in a meal or two somewhere inbetween, and then head to bed. Outside of texting one or two people my general interactions with anyone outside my family or closest circle of friends was virtually zero.

So why should I keep my rights? Well that's hard to answer, some of those who vote on these recalls will not have been here long enough to see what I can do. I have pioneered/heavily contributed to many aspects and projects on the wiki, from re-categorizing weapons and items to pioneering the bug verification project as well as setting in solid stone our bug policies. More importantly, at least I believe, is that I keep coming back. This is not my first leave of absence, albeit this one was more unexpected than the last, and each time I have gone inactive for a few months I always come back. I come back because I love this wiki, because I've put hours upon hours into editing, and doing my best to help create a friendly, high quality, and educational environment for any and all who visit us. Whether they be a new editor or just someone wanting to see how to do a quest. I intend to pick up my editing again over the course of the summer as well as increase my presence in chat and in the community, in order to compensate for my absence over the course of the past year. I should add that this will remain true even if I am not allowed to keep my rights, as I am still inherently tied here by my love of this series, and this wiki. ---bleep196- (talk) 22:49, May 1, 2015 (UTC)

As the users have been notified, and the minimum number of users (3) have brought the petition, this appears to be competent. There's nothing in the process about mass reconfirmations, but nothing against it either.

If the any users targeted desire it, I would be willing to separate their vote into a separate page, and this may be done on their request (anyone not requesting it keeps their vote here). Agent c (talk) 20:40, April 27, 2015 (UTC)

I hereby request my vote be moved to a separate page. I would encourage any others on this list to do the same - I feel very strongly that the sheer quantity of users in this forum is in many ways impersonal and does not lend itself to critical thought about the individual, only the concept of inactive administrators, which is in itself a separate issue. FollowersApocalypseLogo A Follower  Talk  08:37, May 1, 2015 (UTC)

As a pre-vote point of information, what were the criteria used to add users to the list on this page? --Skire (talk) 20:52, April 27, 2015 (UTC)

People who have had a general lack of presence on the wiki, either in chat and wiki side (be it artciles, forum, blog or even their own user pages) so I first checked their edit history to see if they'd made more than a couple in the past month or so. As for chat I went by my own rule of thumb, but asked a couple other users if they'd ever seen the users on this list in chat. One or two have been in once or twice a month, and some haven't even been in once this year. So I pretty much they're on this list because I can't honestly say "Oh yeah, they've been here". I have seen some of them in chat recently, yes, but I do not consider once or twice a week after not being here at all for a month to be active. Hopefully that explains it (although I understand if not).
The fact is that Kern has spent more time modding in the past few months than most of these people have combined. JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 21:01, April 27, 2015 (UTC)
Well, ideally I'd hope for more concrete criteria, but I realise the matter is not very black-and-white at all. Thanks for the clarification though. --Skire (talk) 21:03, April 27, 2015 (UTC)

Limmiegirl Lildeneb Talk! ♪ 09:43, April 28, 2015 (UTC)

Just cause I want to throw my two cents in: I would like to point out that, with the likely announcement of FO4 coming up we need all capable, experienced hands on deck and, in my opinion, reconfirming those who have been inactive might very well have the exact opposite effect of what is desired, that is to say it may drive people away as opposed to encourage them to return. Richie9999 (talk) 21:46, May 1, 2015 (UTC)

If not having extra user rights is enough to dissuade someone from returning... --Skire (talk) 21:57, May 1, 2015 (UTC)
If people won't come back unless they have rights then I don't think they're the sort of people I want as admins and moderators on the wiki. We keep getting great new users who make more than suitable replacements, and honestly people who are rarely here and are thus not up to date on our policies are going to be experienced in how things used to be. If we take their rights away due to inactivity they'll be more than able to re-earn them again when they return. JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 22:00, May 1, 2015 (UTC)

Our policy on user rights states clearly they are not a reward for good behaviour. The admin tools are not a retention programme. If people would like a retention programme, I'd be happy to run one if I had a budget. Agent c (talk) 22:08, May 1, 2015 (UTC)
