Forums: Index > Fallout: New Vegas general discussion > How do YOU make money?

I'm not asking in what ways can you make money, but I'm asking YOU personally, how do you make your cash? I personally have started hoarding weapons and either supplying them to the Gun Runners in a steady supply, or, after visiting the Big MT. I am selling to the Sinks CIU. 173.218.154.40 19:50, July 23, 2011 (UTC)

Console commands, awe yeah (p.s this is exclusive to pc, so ps3 users and xbox users can suck it): [~key] player.additem 0000000f x x = amount of caps.

You guys may not think much of this Idea, but I made around 20,000 caps by raiding caravans, any will do, Crimson caravan, Novac caravans, travelling Caravans, each guy seems to have around 200+ caps and some random loot, including laser rifles ect... If you are a legion character this is a good method as the are usually a few Stimpaks inside too... Ryanurch (talk) 20:30, October 30, 2012 (UTC)

The best way I've found to make money - although it requires a "start-up" fee and having the Long Haul perk helps immensely - is to keep any looted armor/weapons and visit Major Knight in the Mojave Outpost. He has a repair skill of 100 and when you pay to have items repaired, the caps go into his inventory which can then be pick-pocketed - essentially giving you free repairs (and a much higher resale value of mint condition items). While saving/loading until a successful pick-pocket is granted can become tedious at times, it is definitely worth the trouble in the long run and soon you will have more caps than you can spend. --R333x2

Exploiting the Casino's of all their money >:D 67.174.95.30 23:35, July 23, 2011 (UTC)

Yep, casino exploits work best, and as far as I know it still hasnt been patched. --Xa3MysteriousStranger 23:38, July 23, 2011 (UTC)

Well I don't exploit the casninos, i exploit everything else, i even take out patches if needed. I usually salvage weapons, use crappy weapons to repair awsome weapons to sell, repair a multiplas with a plasma, make 10x more than what i put in. Buy cheap weapons from vendors, (barter 100), repair them either with my limitless supply of repair kits, (thanks dead money) or with jury rigging, make anywhere from 2 to ten times more caps than i put in. And when that doesn't pay my bills, whitch are large because i am wastefull. ( I like to drop guns from gun runners worth thousands of caps and mods of the side of hoover dam, then jump in the water and try to find them. Haven't found one :), and that i like to reverse pickpoctet combat armour, rifles, and ammo onto people everywhere (especially on thugs in freeside, ever been charged by a bunch of guys in powerarmour with multiplas rifles while walking down the street? The people in freeside sure haven't.) I scavenge things like conductors and sensor modules to sell. Toaster and muggy make the rest of my stuff to sell. SOON THE WORLD WILL BURN IN NUCLEAR FIRE... AGAIN!- Toaster 174.109.137.71 00:06, July 24, 2011 (UTC)

i nab all the gold bars from the sierra madre and live off the spoils of war; selling armor and weapons as I find them. I use the gold bars to stock-pile vast quantities of ammo from the Gun Runners and Bos. Zac hemker 16:43, July 24, 2011 (UTC)

I just sell anything with a value of ten or above. Crossfire XVI 17:36, July 24, 2011 (UTC)

My companions kill legionary assassins and other groups frome the legion raid camp so making 8000-10000 caps in one run.

I raid The Fortand sell their stuff. ___________________________________________________________

I found a new fun exploit. Empty bottles sell like crap but purified water sells good. The sink in the sink in the big MT can turn any empty bottle into a bottle of purified water including milkbottles soda bottles whiskey bottles etc. Did you know that the sunset sasparilla bottling plant has over 600 bottles? Now you do!

DoctorJay 22:16, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

I kill the guards at the Gun Runners and sell all their stuff. They respawn every couple of days, and you can get around 8000 caps at a time. Best of all, you can still trade with the robot! --Wiseman of the Wastes 22:45, July 27, 2011 (UTC)

Prolly best money making skill is jury rigging. Buy almost broken items that sell well and repair them with crappy weapons. Mainly money is in picking up weapons and repairing them ... then selling. Remember to pick up items so you can make weapon repair kits.

I get buffout from the sierra madre vending machine and sell it to motor runner.Cheese eater42 07:39, July 29, 2011 (UTC)

Anything that makes 5 caps per pound or weightless and isn't nailed down. Although I tend to make a lot less if playing a good character. User:Great_MaraUser talk:Great_Mara 07:46, July 29, 2011 (UTC)

We have managed to get both the NCR and Caesar's Legion to supply us at the same time. That plus chips from the Sierra Madre getting us weapons repair kits, (we "sell" cigarettes to the machine to get extra chips), to repair the weapons we get from the Legion hit squads that show up every 2 to 3 days, (Yes, they are sending hit squads and supplying us at the same time...crazy!), and we are rolling in caps.DarthOrc 08:26, July 29, 2011 (UTC)DarthOrc

My new character is only level 8 and has not been to the strip yet. Max bet at the casinos is now 25, used to be 200 so that is nerfed. I make extra money by walking from the grub & gulp to McCarran after dark. I tag along behind NCR troops and let them do the fighting. I sell the Fiend armor right away and save the Laser RCWs untill I have the weapon repair kits to up their value. I save the NCR armor to repair Recon and Combat armor after I get Jury Rigging. What I'm really after is the NCR dog tags so I can get the Lucky Shades. Squalor 14:57, July 30, 2011 (UTC)

Mostly hunting animals or lobotimites as lobos carry saturnite fists and proton axes which sell for a fair price. I also still have 30 of the gold bars i "aquired" from the sierra madre thanks to elijah being mostly blind =) User:Ryan Liddell145

I sell Proton Axes and Proton Axe accessories. 71.71.26.149 15:33, August 4, 2011 (UTC)

Get kicked out of all the Casinos in less than an hour. 8) --Tactical Gamer 06:45, August 5, 2011 (UTC)

I have repair of 100. I raid places with veteran rangers and grab their armors. get like 2 in 100% condition (by grabbing a bunch and using repair) and then go sell them at the gun runners store. I only have a barter of 60 something but I still get about 8000 a piece for them.

I usually hunt Death claws and then sell the eggs

What I do is,I grab my Gobi Campaign scout rifle, then I start hunting fiends and legion soldiers(I have made myself ammo restrictions,I only except one shot kills)and sell all of their stuff. Deathclawslayer99.

I get stimpacks for 25 sierra madre chips, then sell them for 75 caps. Charlie1121 00:40, August 11, 2011 (UTC)

I get Boone, equip him with the Remnants Power Armor and helmet, The Tesla Beaton Prototype, 1000 electron charge pack ammo, and a chainsaw. I get ED-E. And then I have them wait at the legion raid camp or the fort or some other place with respawning enemies with good loot. and I come back every few days to loot the dead bodies of the people my companions make short work of. Darth Roxas 03:14, August 11, 2011 (UTC)

i have a luck of 10 and go to the casinos and win the jackpots!

i didn't know they changed the max bets at casinos!! been in the dlc's this whole time. that was always an easy way to get caps. also didn't know about the endless weapon repair kits, thanks. i do have the gold bars but when i went to the big MT i did not bring enough loot and was constantly in need of repairs (mostly to armor). i end up selling ammo when i realize i have 4000 flamer fuels or something. basically sell any ammo you don't use often especially if you have 1000+ of them! they sure add up. of course i always use more expensive ammo like .308 rounds for this machine and the gobi, so i like to keep a large supply of those. but i even had 4000+ MF cells which i use all the time so i sold some of those too.hippiehop 15:24, November 6, 2011 (UTC)

I've made money in a lot of fun and amusing ways on quite a few of my characters. My Legion character simply pillages and kills people he doesn't like (Which is everyone besides Novac and other Legionaries) and sells everything they had. My prospector character picks up every damned thing that's not nailed to the floor, you can make a surprising amount of caps with that. And my NCR Ranger character makes things for cash, turning 182 caps worth of materials into 500 cap Time Bombs. My favorite though is still my prospector. You find so much random crap, pick through the useful stuff, and sell everything else. Decent money, and adds to the roleplay value. The Cyan Dragon 15:31, November 6, 2011 (UTC)

Me? I just loot absolutely anything and everything that is 10 caps or more in value (and I don't have to steal, since I'm a good character) and then sell it. Can be time consuming, but jury rigging made it easier when dealing with weapons and armor. While this doesn't produce an insane amount of caps, it still produces more than I ever need. It helps that I play a sniper character that doesn't use much of either ammo or consumables, so my expenses are rather low anyway. Jimera0 02:07, November 8, 2011 (UTC)

I pick up anything involved in a recipe, even if I have a ton of it already, and just sell weapons and armor that are common and can't be used for easy repairs.

I pick up everything I can, repair whatever I can, then sell it. Bldudas 17:57, November 18, 2011 (UTC)

Hunting Deathclaws and selling their eggs and claws tends to raise my funds pretty quickly Fanartist 18:41, November 23, 2011 (UTC)

I never buy a thing. just collect junk and trade until I either am getting caps or all the debt is traded off. I usually have a str=1 and even so I still can collect enough to cover debts. --vendigroth 12:04 11//30/2011

Too bad they didn't have a "STORE" for sale, real-estate, that the folks of the strip, freeside... wherevever... would visit an purchase your items. (Food, water, maybe even guns) --Orka 2:07Pm Pacific, January 1st 2012

In my opinion, there is really no struggle for caps at any point in this game as many people seem to think. Collect the 7 non DLC snowglobes to yield 14,000 caps. Then by the time you're going to need caps again, it's probably about time to do Dead Money. I always make sure I have Strong Back and Burden to Bear at this point, that way I can escape with at least 8 bars. Only 8 and not 10, because there are many things I like to take with me, especially the Sierra Madre Reinforced armor and helmet, police pistol, bear trap fist, etc.

Duckypwns 09:35, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

I just collect anything that is worth something, and then i sell it to whoever can afford it. --Geth343 8:02 1/17/2012

High Luck + Casino loot is nice, but those caps are finite thanks to the bans. For me, it's Jury Rigging all the way! Piss off the Legion, kill assassination squads (console not PC, luckily I've not encountered the bug where they don't spawn yet), get good weapons in bad shape, repair with bad weapons in good shape, $$$$!

And after Dead Money and infinite chips, technically means infinite Weapon Repair Kits, so if one waits to do DM you don't even need to take Jury Rigging. 100 Repair is still VERY worth it though, to take out those freakin' holograms. And Jury Rigging comes in handy when doing a loot-fest and weight becomes an issue, you have a lot more options to use Repair to minimize weight and maximize profit.

Speaking of the Madre, don't do like me and forget to cash out ALL your SM Chips for Pre-War Money before leaving. Though the sting of that wasn't so bad, as I managed to use the "glitch thru the force field" trick to get out with all the Gold Bars...

I'm with Ducky up there, I've never really felt like I was hurting for caps. And after Dead Money (as long as you've got the Comp Voucher and codes), you're pretty well set for life... 4.152.108.66 21:42, October 28, 2012 (UTC)

Take what you can. Give nothing back !

SaintPain TinySaintPainThat was broke afore I got here." 21:55, October 28, 2012 (UTC)

I suppose I'm qualified to discuss this: in addition to having 37 gold bars, 23,427 pre-war money and not being banned from casino's yet; I have 1,092,343 caps. When you get over a million the pip boy shows 1000000+ but when your in the barter window it shows your true amount. Jury Rigging is a must. I use Knight at the Mojave Outpost to repair Wasteland Wanderer/Settler outfits, Fiend helmets, NCR trooper uniforms and metal armor. I then use these to repair expensive armor and helmets. Also Pool cues, brass knuckles and knives and sometimes bb guns, varmint rifles and 9mm pistols but I usualy use weapon repair kits from the holo-vender. I'm always waiting for the next 55. I always buy combat helmets. I buy Recon armor if it's less than 500. I always try to leave the vender with no caps by buying ammo to make up the difference. Squalor (talk) 18:04, October 30, 2012 (UTC)

I loot everything, and take everything that isn't stealing. I hold as much as I can, and give companions as much as they can hold. I then go to various vendors and sell everything I can. Bldudas (talk) 19:42, October 30, 2012 (UTC)

There is a Glitch in the game That'll get you money and free items at the store.

To do the glitch, you need the following:

A store that has 2 of the same item but of different prices.
You and the store have the same item but of different conditions.
or bring 2 of the same items, just make make sure one is in top condition and the other is less than 50%. It works best with Guns or Armour.
Go to the store and buy the lower priced item. If you have one or more items, sell them first., then buy the lower priced one.
Then sell it back. The trick may not work at first but if it does , not only the item will sell at a higher price, but repaired at 100%.

You'll gain a profit (Your 100% Selling price - store's lower condition price)

Repeat until the Store's caps amount is 0.
Make sure you have a good supply of weapons and armors that you want to get rid of. After 3 in-game days, The store will re-supply including all the caps so you can the glitch over and over.

My current character sides with neither the Legion, NCR or Mr. House. So I just go on raids around the Mojave. I use an assault carbine with surplus ammo and just hit every caravan,Legion camp, and ranger station in the wastes. I also use Molotov cocktails and C4/land mines when hitting the caravans. I also tend to scream WOLVERINES!!!! as I kill everyone. The Rangers always carry expensive loot and the Legion isn't bad neither. To be honest I just hit the caravans because I think blowing up the Brahmans is hilarious.

EARLY GAME: Carry away everything that's not nailed down. Stash them all in the four crates beside the Saloon. Weapons and Armors can be funky to store, so I am grateful for the crates' ease of use. Repair every (relatively) high value weapons and armors then resell them to Chet. I use the courier body outside of Primm's Mojave Express as a storage space. After I got to Novac, I drag the headshotted body back to beside the stair lead to Gift shop to be a storage space. Novac's rep + discount seem to be better than idolized Chet. Play conservatively, improve your current weapons instead of chasing after the newer ones, and many caps will be saved from unnessary purchase. Things change with Jury Rigging. Now I can afford to buy good stuff, but I wont. A true prospector/salvager wont spend money until it's necessary. (Skill point investment: Repair, Survival, Science, Lockpick, Speech. Gun stop at 50.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Laclongquan (talkcontribs). Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

Early on, once I get to idolized in Goodsprings, I can get Trudy to buy from me at full value and I sell to her until she runs out of money. That usually gets me enough spending money to get by until I can get to Freeside and Vegas. Once there, I like to get to Mick & Ralph's, get access to Mick's special inventory, and purchase the Naughty Nightwear. If I can afford it, I also visit the medical center and buy a luck implant. With a decent luck stat, you can visit the casinos and easily play until you hit the limit at blackjack (not to mention how fun it is). By this time, I should have all the money I need, especially since I don't usually buy all that much, preferring to find everything I use. Mostly I like to use this money to buy all the rest of the implants that my character's body can handle. --FFIX (talk) 19:16, March 11, 2013 (UTC)

Do yourself a favour and skip the damn casino games or caravan. They will break your game. keep in mind that both Bethesda and Obsidian contain game developers with track record of creating game-breaking features. Anyone remember the mess that is Morrowind? A very nice game but you can break the system by using certain strategy beyond the level they design it for (spell combination, alchemy, learn by doing...). Nice ideas, good excution, but terrible abuse-prevention. If you really want money and loot, you can try a legitimate strategy but quite dangerous to keep your heart pumping by doing the fast travel circuit Raided Farmstead-highway Viper camp - Allied Tech - Hunter farm - Tribal village. There's good combat at every point, with good loots, except the last, great loots.Laclongquan (talk) 07:32, March 13, 2013 (UTC)

That's odd. I've never had an issue with either one. Caravan isn't good anyway as a money maker because most players have little money; that, and it's really not that enjoyable a game IMHO. I just play enough to complete the challenges for it. But the casino games are really fun--at least blackjack and slots. I would hate to give those up. --FFIX (talk) 08:16, March 13, 2013 (UTC)

To make money extremely fast I find that getting 33,000 caps is ideal. To get that I start by doing a combination of looting the Silver Rush (Van Graffs). They have a one of the largest laser tech shops is the game and they sell for good money, say at Mick and Ralphs. You can also collect all 7 snowglobes for 14k caps. I like sitting outside the city limits and steal assassinating caravans. It's easy to do if you have say a varmint rifle w/ a suppressor and night vision scope. (or you could go higher-end and earn the unique varmint rifle, Ratslayer) The caravan trick is tedious but is good if you are close to 33k. You could hit up the endless fiends around New Vegas, they carry TONS of laser RCWs and they pay well. But when you get to 33k caps then things get REALLY fun.

LIMITLESS FAST CAPS For this method I highly recommend saving before attempting as this may crash your console (its pretty harmless don't worry) This method can easily ruin your experience as you can cause yourself to lose interest in valuing unique items. I suggest beating the game or playing legit before using this awesome exploit. Now pay attention to this. The game's chip limit is set to a little under 33,000. Which converts to 33,000 bottlecaps. Just get 33k to be safe. Now go to any casino that is functioning. That's any casino you haven't wiped out or the Vikki and Vance casino if you've re-opened it. Buy 33k CHIPS with your 33K caps. Now drop them on the ground. You should get -33k chips when you pick them back up. This is a glitch and it has not been patched. Now turn in the chips for NCR currency, Legion coins, or Caps and you will note that when they attempt to take the chips, they will take a non-existent 33k chips from you (since you have -33K). Repeat this process for easily 100k caps and 100k in Legion and NCR currency. Note: Do not leave or save as this will undo your -33k and you will have to start over to exploit again. But the caps and such that you receive is permanent (till you spend it) Most players can receive up to millions or billions of caps from this exploit. Now don't ruin your game, just get enough to not be wasting hours on making money. Thanks for reading and enjoy! Corrupt Ange1 (XBOX live gamertag)

When I first started this game I was obsessed with scavenging everything I could and selling it for a profit. I would grab everything that was worth 10 or more caps and was not owned and sell it when I got too much weight. Then I started Dead Money. I broke the bank at the Sierra Madre and cashed in my chips for pre-war money and went into the vault. I used the force field glitch to get all the gold bars out (along with everything else that was in the vault) and made my way back to the Mojave. I took what I could carry to the Sink and put everything else in the footlocker in the Abandoned BoS Bunker. I sold all of the pre-war money and the gold bars. The only problem with this method is the enormous amount of time it takes to get the gold bars to the Sink to sell them. The Sink Central Intelligence Unit usually takes about 4 days in Big MT to restock so you have to wait a long time. Also, once you get so many caps it takes away the feeling you get when you find a stockpile of stuff in the wasteland. Forcaster (talk) 05:21, April 21, 2013 (UTC)

Once you have the Transportalponder, doesn't that remove the problem of getting everything there? Just load yourself up and click, then stash what you can't sell. And if waiting for the Sink to restock is a problem, there is a mod that replenishes its caps if it goes below 2000. BTW, I never did get over my tendency to scavenge, even when I have over 100K caps. And it just got worse with iAssist, which lets me scavenge all the junk off the ground with just a few keypresses. Yes, I'm a hoarder--I even have the trait! --FFIX (talk) 12:34, April 21, 2013 (UTC)
I guess I worded that wrong. I meant that it takes a while to sell them. Moving them there is easy. Also, I use xbox so I can't use mods on my game. Forcaster (talk) 16:58, April 21, 2013 (UTC)
I did use the script to refresh Sink's chips. A good thing to liquidate your loots. Still, that's middle to late game. For early game, Great Khans Armorer, Primm and Novac is three easy shops for 100% selling, as it's extremely easy to get rep and barter to that level. If they dont have enough caps, dont forget to buy weapon mods, since it's just as easy to sell back at 100%. Or buy 12.7mm/.45-70govt ammo, since they are too rare to find.If I feel like making money, I follow this routine: Fast Travel to 95 Viper nest, then Raided Farmstead, then Nipton Rest Pit Stop, then Tribal Village, then vault 3, then get out through the Las Vegas East/West Entrance, then 3Fiends spot in middle of Brewer Beer Bootlegging and SS Headquarter, then Devil throat to the northeast. Anytime West Rested status expire I drop by Novac or a safehouse to get onehour catnap. With one cycle like that it will take nearly two day to complete. Drop by your central loot warehouse to fix what you can, take a full inventory of trade goods (guns), then visit Prim, Novac, and Great Khan Armorer. My god, how caps just rolling in!Laclongquan (talk) 08:49, April 22, 2013 (UTC)

Earning money while shopping: This require all DLCs installed with reasonable Repair and stuff. You can buy missiles and rockets from merchants. Dissassemble them at workbenchs to make HE rockets and Incendiary rockets(with flamer fuels), and spare conductors. instant profit on the go, yo!!! If you complete HH, you can buy .45 to remake into .45 superhandloaded(with handloader perk). Extremely effective with Great Khan armorer as there are benches right beside her.Laclongquan (talk) 05:49, May 11, 2013 (UTC)

I make money by slaughtering all the men and looting their corpses, afterwards selling whatever they had. Sometimes i have to kill the hostile women too *sigh* but anyways I seriously have over 100,000 caps. Another good way I make money is, I killed Joshua Graham and Daniel in Zion Valley(Because they're men and Joshua Graham is a former-legion asshole as well as a hideous burn victim. Daniel pissed me off by not telling Waking Cloud about her dead husband) *sigh* anyways, my point is that by killing them and leaving with the map, whenever you return to Zion Valley the White Legs will always be there and you can kill them and take their .45 autos and shishkebabs and riot shotguns and whatever and repair them and make shit tons of caps <3 I'm Yellow Heart (talk) 00:16, May 30, 2013 (UTC)

Just kill enemies, loot them, max repair weapons and armors and sell them to vendors until they are out of caps. Looking for merchants restocking their caps, then do it again! best merchants for that are gun runners, crimson caravan, the Sink AI, Joshua Graham and Divide Distributors (3 lasts have 100 repair skills). My levels 50 characters reach about 350000 caps or more! - GEMINI57

I have been banned from every casino in Mojave LOL. I play blackjack and it takes me about 10 minutes to get banned anywhere. You can horde about 40k+ caps that way i think. And you're set for life. :p

I found all the money I could possibly ever need in the ruins of the old world - within a city of ghosts, shrouded in a red cloud. The hard part wasn't finding it, it was letting go... Vault8
