I know this has been made a thousand times, but most discussions i see people don't go into much detail. So my question is, which game do you prefer Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas? the majority seems to say Fallout 3, personally i prefer New Vegas and i'll list my reasons as to why below.
1: New Vegas was a lot more open, i know this is odd as most people seem to not like New Vegas being more open, personally i felt claustrophobic when i was in D.C. and i also like the atmosphere of New Vegas better, being in open terrain, the wild-west sort of feeling, i just love it.
2: Weapon mods are fantastic, i love the fact i can change out the bolt on my sniper, or change the stock on it from wood to synthetic, to reduce the weight, it gives the game a more survival feel to me, i also like the weapons in New Vegas a lot better, even if there are some of the same weapons from Fallout 3.
3: I felt there was more freedom in New Vegas, even if there were pesky invisible walls, you have many, many factions to choose from ( it would of been a lot better if for example The Brotherhood of Steel could take over New Vegas, because who doesn't like The Brotherhood :D
4: I love Hardcore mode, it gives the game so much more immersion, having to drink, eat, sleep, it all adds to the fun of the game, because the more immersion the better in my book.
Now the things i like in Fallout 3 over New Vegas.
1: The companions were better in Fallout 3 to me, Fawkes and Dogmeat were awesome, when i came out of Raven Rock and saw Fawkes tearing some ass up with a Gatling laser, i dropped my controller and slow clapped, i also like the companionship of Dogmeat, he really feels like mans best friend. (i sort of felt the same with Rex, it's just easier to get more attache to a living thing than a half-machine)
2: The story was better, it had it's faults, but i felt a lot more emotionally attached, even if The Lone Wanderer's father was sort of a bastard.
So at the end of the day i prefer Fallout: New Vegas, both are FANTASTIC games, but i just prefer New Vegas overall, i do wish New Vgeas had the memorable companions like Fallout 3 though. Anyway sorry for the long post, but i would love to hear your guys reasons for liking New Vegas over Fallout 3, or liking Fallout 3 over New Vegas. The main thrust of the story in Fallout 3 manages to be a rehash of Fallout and Fallout 2: clean water and the Enclave trying to murder everyone they consider to be a mutant. Fallout New Vegas manages to have two stories: a personal revenge drama and a clash of civilizations. So not counting the DLCs for either game, Fallout 3 has a deficit of story and New Vegas has a story surplus. In terms of suspension of disbelief, the Capital Wasteland loses out to the Mojave Wasteland. I don't understand how anyone in the Capital Wasteland survives, plant life and clean water are scarce, most of the settlements seem to have sprung up without rhyme or reason; as if their inhabitants threw a dart on a map, rather than trying to choose a place with some kind of commodity or opportunity to exploit or a real defensible location (Little Lamplight doesn't count, being underground and having a junk wall should not count when you're right next to a hyper-irradiated death zone with super mutant neighbors, that place gets by on plot armor). By contrast, settlements in the Mojave Wasteland all have (or had) a clear reason for existing where they do (with the exception of Nelson).
Starting off as the Courier gives you the freedom to explore any path without necessarily deciding that your character is a completely amoral sociopath: maybe they were just a simple traveler that gets caught up in things and becomes ambitious, maybe they were a stout NCR patriot or a Legion Frumentarius all along, that's your call. The Lone Wanderer could a psychopath that murders everyone they don't enslave, who commits prolonged suicide by messing up the purifier, but it sure seems disjointed and strange; as I'm pretty sure James didn't bring his kid up that way.--OvaltinePatrol (talk) 18:33, July 23, 2013 (UTC)
