Just finished reading all I could about the FEV (forced evolutionary virus) and a few things don't add up to me.
  +
  +
First off, the virus injects RNA that I assume gets transcribed into DNA in normal viruses via an enzyme who's name excapes me, but here's the kicker, it forms a separate DNA double-helix perpendicular to the normal DNA strand.
  +
  +
It then, apparantly, it not only replicates normally (which of my understanding of DNA replication is completely ludicrous as the various enzymes would have to 'work around' the second helix in order to work) but also increases mitotic divisions (cellular division) by I believe it said 30%
  +
  +
Also, the amino acid groups used by the virus were radiated which, correct me if I'm wrong, would kill something as small as a virus in no time, as well as being completely unstable for DNA structure.
  +
  +
These characteristics make the infected sbujects immune to bacteria and viruses (it's never said, but I'm guessing it's because bacteria and viruses when they 'inject' their RNA/DNA, it can't work because of the quadruple-helix)

Quite frankly that's just stupid, it would make sense if a new series of DNA transcribing enzymes were created to be able to carry out this new form of genetic coding but then you would need to re-code their DNA to do that creating more complications.
  +
  +
It would achieve all the desired results from what I understand, but seeing that no living creature ever found has ever functioned without a quadruple helix, the chances are very close to zero.

Similar results could've been achieved if the normal DNA of a test subject was controllably destroyed by the radiation to be replaced by hashed DNA from the virus that turns its RNA into DNA that the cells can't get rid of.
  +

Of course this is how mutation works too in that the body (which normally kills off certain mutations detected by 'defender' enzymes that are coded to detect 'kill' sequences and initiate them) can't differentiate an incorrect coding with a normal gene being over-expressed thus cancer (uncrontrollable growth)

However, if their was a synthesized enzyme that could detect these sequences and be injected by virus or a consumer product with a growth medium (i.e. RadAway) then that person would be immune to any over-expression genes and flat out transcription errors but not pre-existing regulation of a pre-existing gene.
  +
  +
This would make any mutated person keep all of the functional mutations and weed out all the others which would create an explanation for the high occurance of ghouls in certain populations (i.e. Vaults and NCR military ex. Camp Searchlight)
  +
  +
Just because the mutation functions doesn't mean it is optimal, as my only excuse for feral ghouls in these populations. Normal ghouls and feral ghouls occur only as rare occurances in a once giant poplulation that was exposed to radiation, each with varying durability and resiliance.
  +
  +
Also any FEV could be synthesized depending on the creators 'preference' for certain genes. The applied radiation would exist to destroy pre-existing genes that interfere with the new genes expression and serve as an excuse for radiations occurance alongside some strains of FEV.
  +
  +
If one's intent was to kill with the FEV, all they would have to do is create a strain with 'kill switch' DNA that infects certain 'tagged' DNA which in this case is radiation.
  +
  +
Pre-existing mutations on un-incoculated persons (i.e. wastelanders) would screw up the gene expression from the virus, not even transcrible from the virus, or just render the final product in-operable so that it could die from the ensuing radiation or turn out un-inteded.
  +
  +
The reliability from the strain is variable as in Mariposa (where it was being tested) and Vault 87 (where it was being used) because it fits previous 'spit-balling' above.
  +
  +
Inoculated individuals would be better candidates if you understand what is said above and achieve exact results as is pre-determined from the virus.

All in all, the virus wouldn't cause evolution, just really effective genetic engineering, which basically is just as good immediately but requires someone to 'program' it.

As for Doc Lesko, umm... let's just say he really didn't know what he was doing and leave it at that.

Sorry for all of that, I'm at intellectual limbo being a mere AP Biology student and would appreciate that acknowledgement from any genetic specialists.--[[Special:Contributions/98.243.111.18|98.243.111.18]] 05:13, December 31, 2011 (UTC)

CAUTION ONLY PEOPLE WITH KNOWLEDGE REGARDING DNA, VIRUSES, OR BACTERIA WILL UNDERSTAND, UNLESS I FIND OUT THAT I'M TERRIBLY WRONG, THANK YOU.

Just finished reading all I could about the FEV (forced evolutionary virus) and a few things don't add up to me.

First off, the virus injects RNA that I assume gets transcribed into DNA in normal viruses via an enzyme who's name excapes me, but here's the kicker, it forms a separate DNA double-helix perpendicular to the normal DNA strand.

It then, apparantly, it not only replicates normally (which of my understanding of DNA replication is completely ludicrous as the various enzymes would have to 'work around' the second helix in order to work) but also increases mitotic divisions (cellular division) by I believe it said 30%

Also, the amino acid groups used by the virus were radiated which, correct me if I'm wrong, would kill something as small as a virus in no time, as well as being completely unstable for DNA structure.

This would make any mutated person keep all of the functional mutations and weed out all the others which would create an explanation for the high occurance of ghouls in certain populations (i.e. Vaults and NCR military ex. Camp Searchlight)

Just because the mutation functions doesn't mean it is optimal, as my only excuse for feral ghouls in these populations. Normal ghouls and feral ghouls occur only as rare occurances in a once giant poplulation that was exposed to radiation, each with varying durability and resiliance.

Also any FEV could be synthesized depending on the creators 'preference' for certain genes. The applied radiation would exist to destroy pre-existing genes that interfere with the new genes expression and serve as an excuse for radiations occurance alongside some strains of FEV.

If one's intent was to kill with the FEV, all they would have to do is create a strain with 'kill switch' DNA that infects certain 'tagged' DNA which in this case is radiation.

Pre-existing mutations on un-incoculated persons (i.e. wastelanders) would screw up the gene expression from the virus, not even transcrible from the virus, or just render the final product in-operable so that it could die from the ensuing radiation or turn out un-inteded.

The reliability from the strain is variable as in Mariposa (where it was being tested) and Vault 87 (where it was being used) because it fits previous 'spit-balling' above.
