The votes have been opened, and as such this preliminary discussion has run its course. The polls can be found here and here.

About a year ago the issue of how chat emoticons should be dealt with was brought up here, and some users expressed dissatisfaction both with the system with which the emotes were added and the emoticons current available. After some time of inactivity, the issue was again brought up in a new thread.

The main issues brought up by the threads can be summed up as follows:

  1. Excessive number of emotes
  2. The low usage of the emotes available
  3. Poor quality of some of the available emotes
  4. Lack of clear regulations regarding the inclusion of new emotes

Concerns #1 and #2 should be addressed by simply allowing the community to decide which if any of the current emoticons should be retained. Concern #3 is of minor importance, as it can be easily be addressed after the emoticon maintenance procedure has been agreed upon. As for concern #4, the two possible options are either maintaining the current status quo of administrator discretion, or determining that emoticons should be added following a community poll, the same way new rules and policies are voted into place.

I went ahead and created two stubs of polls that should address said concerns, which can be found here and here. The first vote is pretty straightforward I believe, but the second one deserves some explanation. Given the sheer amount of emoticons available, the logistics of voting each individually would be quite complicated and confusing. In order to reduce the amount of options to be voted on, I decided to make a preliminary triage consultation to decide which emotes will actually be voted on for removal. In this phase, users can simply nominate which emotes (or classes) they would like to see gone, and then we can have a vote restricted to simply the ones that were brought up, thereby hopefully bringing the quantity of votes to a more manageable level.

I intend to open both polls to public vote within the week, but for now I submit their stubs for any last minute tweaks and suggestions.

Thank you for our attention.

I personally think things are good the way they are. - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 20:18, February 1, 2014 (UTC)

I don't really see a problem with the way things are currently set up on the emotes page other than changing the quality of a few. I think it should remain at sysop discretion when a new emote is added. I've seen nearly every emote used at least once, and even if I hadn't, what is the harm of having them there? Honestly, I just think our admin staff should treat the emoticons as a semi-serious tool of chat and keep it well maintained and communicated.

If changes need to be made nothing less than a courtesy notification from an admin or bc to other users in chat or perhaps just with good editing intentions should be all that's necessary. Trying to come up with policies for it just seems like a systematic way to organize something that's pretty spontaneous.

One thing I would like for sure is same-size emoticons on the emoticon page itself. Seeing those giant Xbox and Play Station emoticons just looks unprofessional and unnecessary. --The Ever Ruler (talk) 20:47, February 1, 2014 (UTC)

Those were meant just as temporary placeholders to gauge if there were interest in emotes of that kind. If there weren't, they would be removed without having effort wasted in resizing them. If they were well received, then more would be made and the placeholders properly resized and adapted. The original discussion brought the efforts to a halt and as for that reason they remained improperly sized for a year now. Hopefully the situation will be properly dealt with this time though.

After we decide which emotes ought to be removed (which I think should be a one-time thing only due to inherent hassle involved in such a process), we need to keep the number of emoticons to a manageable amount. This means that rarely used emoticons should not be added in the first place. If we maintain sysop discretion, I don't see how the perceived issue will be rectified (considering sysop discretion is the status quo); if we start polls, this minor issue will become unnecessarily bureaucratic... --Skire (talk) 21:05, February 1, 2014 (UTC)

The emotes that do get removed will send a message to the admin staff. So if emoticon X was voted out, then I don't think we'll be using our discretionary prerogative to add emoticon X.01 in the future.

That's true, although in the future, new admins may not know of an emoticon's previous removal. In addition, there may be a demand for an emoticon in the future that is non-existent right now, since the community evolves. --Skire (talk) 21:23, February 1, 2014 (UTC)

i think that the emotes need some improvement as in removing the unless one and adding better ones - SirVaultBoy
