Gold bars & Trapping Father Elijah

Requires Dead Money

It is possible to escape the Sierra Madre Casino Vault with all 37 gold bars and trap Elijah in the vault for the Safety Deposit Box achievement. It's recommended to make a separate save before entering the vault itself, before accessing the Vault Control Terminal, immediately after finishing the dialog with Elijah, and while escaping through the subterranean structure across from the vault door. If Elijah detects the player at any point in time he will sound the alarms. Elijah appears to only trigger the alarms when he has line of sight to the player, as stealth seems to have a minimal affect. Disabling the vault security and generator inside the vault doesn't appear to affect the turrets, as they power back up once Elijah enters the vault. They also appear to be immune to damage until the vault door is opened.

Collect all the bars (36 on the table, 1 in front of the Vault Control Terminal on the floor) and drop them (all at once as a single item), immediately in front of the vault door, lined up with a runs to the door. Use any stims/books/apparel before you read the message from Sinclair to Vera on the terminal (as the dialog with Elijah will occur immediately after you exit the terminal).

  1. Finish the conversation on the Vault Control Terminal ending with a dialog option having Elijah enter the vault.
  2. Immediately turn and run toward the vault door, picking up the gold bars as you approach.
  3. Open the vault door and continue "running" towards the stair case directly in front of the door. Use a Stealth Boy if you have one, it makes this part significantly easier.
  4. At the top of the staircase, turn right, and head into the center opening in the subterranean structure (Elijah should have been seen through the solid window, coming out of the passage from the elevator by now).
  5. Crouch into stealth, and make note of Elijah's tick marker on your compass.
  6. Place the solid part of the wall (to the right of the center opening) between the player and Elijah (breaking line of sight).
  7. This is the tricky part with timing (may want to save here), as Elijah approaches the exterior terminal, hug the interior wall of the subterranean structure, and begin to move towards the elevator through the corridor. Head all the way to the rear opening of the subterranean structure that connects to the left entrance of the elevator passage (facing the elevator from the vault).
  8. Once far enough away from the center opening, the player can stand back up and "run".
  9. Leaving the subterranean structure and enter the elevator passage. When Elijah begins speaking, the force-fields/alarms will activate, and the player must make a hastened exit to the elevator before the collar explodes.
  10. Once in the elevator, the player will be transported to the fountain (with your 37 gold bars), and will earn the achievement.

If unable to get into the elevator passage before the force-field, try reloading the save right after the terminal dialog with Elijah and attempt to move into the subterranean structure quicker. Wait to start moving towards the rear of the structure until Elijah is walking to the vault door (he'll detect you through the open window).

With the right perks you can just walk the damn gold out AFTER killing Papa E with no need for exploits. It requires 7-9 doses of Implant GRX turbo, Chemist, the perk for Day Tripper, and ideally the perk for Fast Times. Thats what I did. Not a wiki editor so I guess I dont have a way to sign this properly or anything.

Can confirm this works (though Fast Times doesn't affect Implant GRX) - hardest part is getting up the broken stairs without falling (in that case I don't think there's a way back up without jumping), stay close to the railing on the broken platform and the corner, the hardest part of this, is just a matter of getting the angle right - aim for the longest extending part, the second "segment" of the platform's model from the edge, plenty of time for a few shots. 168.1.6.15 18:37, September 1, 2015 (UTC)

Usage of Implant GRX

Yes, having Implant GRX can allow one to get all of the gold and still survive. There is another video but I have found a more efficient method.

Another way to smuggle the gold out of the vault if you can't sneak it out or don't have the right perks is to kill Elijah within the force field closest to the escape elevator. You want to kill him so part of his body falls on to the elevator side of the force field. Once he's dead, loot his corpse and place all the gold on his corpse. You'll have to run the long way around to get to the elevator but since his body is within the force field, you'll be able to loot his body on the other side, take all the gold, and quickly escape.

Stealth Boy

Simply leave the vault, turn left and wait for Elijah to approach. The trick is to crouch using the structures for cover. It may take a few quick loads, however as you approach the stairs you can exit the crouch mode and make it in time beyond the forcefield treshold. Forcefields kick in, you head to the elevator with all the gold leaving Elijah trapped. Upon entering the elevator you are transported to the gate connecting the Sierra Madre to the Wasteland. There is a trashbin on the left (when facing the gate) which can be used to store all the goodies gathered prior entering the casino.

TGM

Well, that's all there is to it.

Oh, and TCL, for the barriers. TDetect would also do the trick. --User:SaiyanElite (talk) 00:38, March 21, 2016 (UTC)

bars

Everything siad has been made redundant fallout fucked over its fans and made the gold impossible to steal. If you go near the force fields they now instantly activate no matter if detected or not. They have made the forcefield deflect gold bars so they get thrown over the edge if you try that method and they have made it so the body of father eli cannot go through the forcefield making it entirely impossible to get the gold now.

Never playing another fallout game until my guy gets out of the vault with the gold. That entire download was a complete waste of time and effort without the gold its not like the big empty because you get literally nothing from Sierra Madre there is not one reason at al to get this download and i recommend not getting it. It will only drive you crazy trying to get the gold before giving up on that profile and the entire game entirely —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.211.235.233 (talkcontribs). • LOL. New Vegas hasn't been patched since 2011. It's quite possible to get out with the gold still, I did it in 2017. Read the whole article and watch linked videos. It's actually easier to do it without abusing a glitch. In fact I figured it out on my own without this page. --129.7.0.81 08:34, July 8, 2020 (UTC)

Here's how you can keep all the gold and lock Elijah in, too. (The person who created the header above this one says it's impossible to keep all the gold bars. That's incorrect.)

I am confirming as of April 2021 that it is perfectly possible not only a) to retrieve and keep all the gold bars, but also to keep them and b) lock Elijah in the vault without killing him to complete that optional objective. You don't need any special items or perks to accomplish both, you don't need console commands, and you don't need glitches.

I hit upon the solution that most people did, probably, and it's described elsewhere on this page, but just to ensure that the correct information isn't buried by the incorrect statements that outnumber it, here it is:

Before you access the terminal in front of the big seal on the wall—the one that opens the seal and begins the final remote conversation with Elijah—pick up all the gold bars from the table, then drop all of them at once while standing in front of the exit to the room, which will result in a single "gold bar" object dropped in front of the door (if you aren't aware, dropping that many of one type of item in this game all at once makes all of the items appear as one object in the world). Make sure you're not standing too close to the door when you drop the items, as this may deflect the dropped object to one side. If the object doesn't end up right in front of the door, pick it up again, step back a little farther from the door, and drop it again, until it's directly in the straight-line path you'd take from the opposite end of the room to reach the exit. This is exactly what you'd do in the real world, after all, if you knew you needed to move a big haul out of a place with someone on your heels; you'd move the haul as close to your getaway ride as possible before the countdown started.

When the conversation with Elijah ends, turn around right away and move quickly to the door, open it, and as it swings open, grab the "gold bar" object you dropped in front of it. Then, move as fast as possible up the stairs directly in front of you as you exit the door. Keep moving into the hallway just past the top of the stairs. Immediately crouch and sneak to the right side of the hallway door to put the wall between you and Elijah's line of sight as he enters. I recommend saving here.

Then, you will need to sneak out within the next few seconds without Elijah seeing you, i.e., without putting yourself in a direct line of sight with Elijah, as that will cause the forcefields to go up. This is the trickier part, but it is completely possible to succeed at it (the above comment says the forcefields activate "instantly" if you approach the doorways, but though it might seem that way at first, it is absolutely not true). Sneak down the hallway on the right side of the doorway, moving out onto the gantry beyond the hallway and into the doorway that leads to the separate hallway where Elijah emerges. You should already be crouching on the right side of the doorway you entered to hide from Elijah, so as you move down the hallway and gantry on that side, turn left, then right, then right again, and move through the other doorway into the second hallway before Elijah can put up the forcefield. The game seems to be strict about Elijah seeing you if you put yourself in his line of sight, but even so, this took me all of four attempts to complete successfully. (Using Turbo probably helps, but I didn't, so you don't have to do that.)

Once that part's done, you have plenty of time to get to the elevator before your collar explodes, and as soon as you get to the elevator, you're suddenly out in the Villa and right by the gate to take you out of the DLC's map forever. Done: Elijah's locked in, and all the gold bars leave with you. NewhonImproved (talk) 04:05, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

Implant GRX Still Possible 2021

I can confirm as of May 2021 using Implant GRX is still possible, and in fact fairly easy. Just use multiple doses as soon as you leave the vault, by the time it wears off you'll be almost to the speaker section without Elijah even beginning to speak. Then just drop down to escape the speakers or pause for his speech which causes them to explode, and slow time again to reach the area where you have to jump up a stair. Drop the bars on the upper part of the stairway and jump up, then leisurely proceed to the elevator. Even with some wasted seconds you should have plenty of time.
