I'm still pretty early in the game (level 7, just did some of Moira's sidequest and I'm at the Rivet City main story line quest). I'm wondering what the best weapons are that you can [realistically] get this early in the game. Also, I'm trying to take into consideration the availability of ammo... 188.8.131.52 00:54, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
The N99 10mm Pistol Amata hands you in Escape is excellent. When you find one, you should upgrade to a .32 hunting rifle, then an R91 Assault Rifle, an AER9 laser rifle, and an Enclave Plasma Rifle. The guns will become more available as you progress through the main quest. Nitty 00:57, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Make your way to The Republic of Dave and get your hands on Ol' Painless. Repairable with normal Hunting Rifles, faster RoF than Hunting Rifles, and more damage. It's one of my favorite beginning weapons in the game. ~Unholy
Thus far I have (and have been using) both shotguns, the hunting rifle, the assault rifle and the 10mm SMG but I really find the hunting rifle to be pretty weak so I guess I'm looking for a better rifle... seeing as the guns i already have seem to be decent for my level?? 184.108.40.206 01:49, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, you're right about it being hard to get to Dave's at low levels. Though if you hook around from the right side edge of the map to get to Dave's, Olney shouldn't be much of a problem. ~Unholy
A Chinese assault rifle is a good choice for the Small Guns player. They're pretty rare early-midgame, but if you can find one and keep it in a decent state of repair, the huge amounts of Super Mutant Masters you'll fight endgame will keep it fed and clean. Nitty 03:29, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
I usually use the baseball bat from the dresser in Vault 101, after that the two powerfists in locked boxes on the end of a pier on the way to Rivet City. I stick to that until I can get a combat shotgun, assault rifle, or A321's. Imp of the Perverse 03:36, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
The lever action rifle from the piont lookout DLC is very good but it requiers you the have the DLC. Dog meat 13:47, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Alternatively, let Simms die, and loot his Chinese Assault Rifle. --Big Wang 13:09, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Go to the Outcast Outpost and let them kill all the Muties. Take some of the shit they have if you want, with luck one of The Outcasts may die and so you get there gun! Finish Operation: Anchorage take all the stuff in the Armory. (Getting all Intel would be nice too.)Hell you can even take the stuff off the Outcasts in the ending firefight anyway! The Mercenary
Doing the operation anchorage DLC also gives you power armor training so you can wear power armor earlier in the game as well as the What I do is I use the hunting rifle as .32 ammunition is easily obtainable by super mutants and save the 5.56 and microfusion cells. hunting rifles may be weak but ammunition is plentiful
I agree with The Mercenary - that guy knows whats up. Anyone who has killed dogmeat with a fat man should be listened to. On my 2nd playthrough I went sraight to Op Anchorage and had winterized t51-b (with PA training), gauss rifle, shocksword, and more guns that i could need at like level 2... kinda tough leaving the outpost but totally worth it...Pgoon 20:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
on my 2nd playthrough I completed tenpenny tower early on in the game so I could get the ghoul mask. Then I made my way to the mall (a simple task with the ghoul mask) and then walked up and took the repeater. I had a moderate amount of ammo already so it has been a great gun since then.
There is also all of Mothership Zetas Weapons. If you can survive it you get some pretty good weapons. Just get a nice amount of stimpacks. (A good way is by doing Operation: Anchorage and taking all of the dead Outcasts weapons and being The Outcast Collection Agent. Maybe keep one for MZ.Thus you have the weapons to get these weapons.) And thanks to Sally you can get infinite ammo for them. The Mercenary
In my opinion the standard hunting rifle is the best early weapon and possibly the best weapon in the game. it is easy to find, does good damage if kept in good condition, very accurate, and its ammo is very easy to find.
I think the Gauss Rifle is one of the best weapons especially if you prefer sneaking, It can kill a Deathclaw with one shot in sneak mode but you need to complete the Operation Anchorage DLC before you can get it. Metro racer 19:51, 20 August 2009
Well early u should get a 32.pistol but if your gutsy ( like me ) head to mutant infested D.C. go to museum and get lincolns repeater does 50 damage with low ap cost
Why haven't I seen the Xuanlong Assault Rifle anywhere? Just follow the main quest till you've done GNR (quest) (and don't forget to do the museum terminal quests to find Prime (save before try)), then you go to Jury street metro station (pretty close from vault 101) and there you are. Ammo is plentiful, only repairs could be a problem but you will find a Chinese Assault Rifle every now and then if you scavenge enough. You're already at rivet city so it shouldn't be much of a problem. I've seen the other option plenty of times, but you will need the DLC O:A for it, so if you don't, try for the XAR. 220.127.116.11 16:59, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
I think A3-21's plasma rifle is one of the best early to mid game weapons, with a little bribing, or luck at speech checks plus fighting 2 mirelurks (I've been able to beat them at level 2 on hard) and you'll have one of the most powerful pre-DLC weapons 18.104.22.168 13:24, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
If you mean REALLY early, the Sniper Rifle hidden outside Megaton is great to have. LVTDUDE 02:39, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
I can't believe no one recommended Lincoln's repeater right off the bat. Headshots all day! It's in the museum of history.
I think no one mentioned Lincoln's repeater because you would have to wade through downtown DC to get to it, and at an early level, that is suicide. 12:44, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
If you really want a good gun early. In SPRINGVALE there is a safe with a laser pistol and some MC. There is a laser rifle north of the valt were you go to tranquilty lane. When you fast travel there. Look north there should be a tent and a robot. The laser rifle is in the tent on the desk. On DLC (The PITT) give the guy 60 or 70 steel ingnots and get the metal blaster. DLC (POINT LOOKOUT) has double barrel shotguns and lever action rifles everywhere the double barrel can do 99 DAM. (stronger than the Terrible Shotgun) and Lever action rifle uses 10mm ammo which is everywhere and can do 71 DAM. great for people starting out early with a high Small guns skill. DLC (Operation:Anchorage) Gary 23 glitch can get you indestructable weapons and armor. Ammo dispenser glitch can get you unlimited ammo. Great for people starting out at low levels.--Fsdfgasgfisd 15:39, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
As soon as I leave the vault I head to Megaton, then to Springvale school, its a good place to get weapons, armour and experience. But I assume your looking for more powerful weapons to help out with harder enemies, so get Lincoln's repeater, A321's plasma rifle and Xuanlong assault rifle. Also try to find some weapon schematics.--Brandon.367 05:11, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
I'd say go to Megaton and get the sniper rifle that's hidden in the rock. Go inside, wait for the sheriff to get killed and get his chinese assault rifle. Head over to Tenpenny Tower and get a free chinese assault rifle to do the quest. When you head over by Warrington Station there is another sniper rifle just sitting out in the open. You only have to kill a few ghouls to get to it. Now you have 2 sniper rifles and 2 chinese assault rifles. Get them repaired as high as possible. This is a really easy way to get two good weapons early on. The sniper rifle is good from a distance and the chinese assault rifle is good from short range. All you have to do is kill Mr. Burke and a few ghouls to get them. LVTDUDE 17:26, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
- While you're at Warrington getting that second sniper get the missile launcher that is on the catwalk above the train cars.--JiNX Bloodfang 06:43, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
