I am a huge fan of fallout, especially New Vegas. And while there were many things that I enjoyed about the game I feel like this was the one big thing that I disliked about it. It is almost impossible to have a bad karma score in the game, now I don't know if it's just me or if other people are having this problem too but even when I go out of the way to be bad I still can only get a neutral karma. For instance I started a new play through about a week ago and I wanted to see how bad I could get (I've tried it in the past without success but I figured I would try again) and even at the beggining of the game when I chose to wipe out goodsprings completely I only had neutral karma. I said to myself well it was just one bad deed, I'm sure that I can get it lower by doing other things. Well I progressed to the part where you have to clear out the Repcon test facility for Novac and I helped Chris sabotage the ghoul's rockets and thought well surely I'll have bad karma by now, but I didn't in fact I lost absolutely no karma for sabotaging the rockets. Beginning to get frustrated at this point I thought to myself well there's obviously other quests to do which give you bad karma so I'll just try to do those. So I went and did the ultraluxe quest and sided with the cannibals, planting Ted's blood in Heck's room and having the securitron kill him and STILL all I had was neutral karma even after being prompted with the bad karma notification. I stole a lot of things thinking that maybe that would be the thing that got my karma down low so that I could be considered bad BUT STILL all I was able to get away with was neutral karma. I'm still playing through hoping that maybe somewhere along the line I'll be able to achieve bad karma. I thought this would be an interesting forum to post just so that I could see other people's opinions on it so what do you all think about karma in fallout New Vegas?

:How much are you stealing? Killing random people? Accessing red computers over and over again? Now, now...don't be like that (voice mimics Dory from "Finding Nemo" movie). :D Well, that's the beauty of consequences for your actions, isn't? You can resort to the usual kill/steal/random thing approach, but you really wanna serious bad karma? Ok.

Sell Cass to the Van Graff's brothers and let Jean Baptiste kill her; blow up the monorail even if you are playing for NCR-Vegas, you gain TONS of bad karma for framing the poor soldier; DON'T FIGHT FIENDS or better yet, take the mission to kill motor-runner, kill Bryce Anders instead, then speech-check Motor-runner to give his helmet to you, wich also gives you serious bad karma; instead of blowing up the BoS bunker, KILL EVERYONE in the bunker then blow it up to add insult to injury (and prepare yourself to kill Veronica also); do the Goodsprings run favoring the Powder Gangers; don't kill MR. House, instead put him back in stasis, wich will kill him slowly; lie to Marcus and get more money from him when dealing with the mercenaries OR simply kill them all; this are just examples, there are more you can find it in the game.

Oh, you want bad karma without SOME consequences? You can't have it, sorry. Also, the decision to blow up the rockets or not are for deciding the fate of Novac in the end-game, not for giving you karma.

But you are playing the vanilla game, isn't? If it's, '''then you are right''', the game revolves around the good deeds net rewards x bad deeds punish the player idea. Also, wich plataform you are playing: PC, PS3 or XboX? If PC, you can use a mod that turns the game into a more cohesive and intelligent experience, because is STUPID gaining so much good karma killing fiends and feral ghouls, but at the same time you gain less karma for, let's say...LAUCHING NUCLEAR MISSILES AT SOME FACTIONS! LOL

JE Sawyer made one hell of a mod for personal use and then release it for anyone to use, because of constant public request. Be advise that IT MAKES THE GAME HARDER AND CHALLENGING but also more enjoyable (IMHO), it pratically turns FNV into another game. The weapons are more lethal (even the Varmint rifle is usefull now), your skills counts more and he made some serious changes in the karma system. Killing Fiends only gives you very little good karma; killing feral ghouls don't net NOTHING; stealing gives you A LOT of bad karma, to the point that if you are a thief, it's almost impossible to return to good karma without doing some serious good deeds (only killing bad guys WON'T WORK). If you do not want to change the difficulty threshold, then you are in a bit of predicament, because almost EVERY karma mod available in the Nexus is also horrid too.

I really recommend Jsawyer mod for two reasons. First is the dev idea of how a game should be, so I think this should be praised. Second is the only mod available that touches EVERYTHING in the world, even Project Nevada don't solve some issues the game has. Also, he changed things - weapons, food, karma, combat, armor - INDIVIDUALLY instead of simply applying a global formula that affects everything.
