Today is the 1.5th anniversary of my patrollership, and I decided that it is time to apply for the role of Admin.

I will start by introducing myself in section 1. After that, I'll explain why I am interested in becoming an Admin in section 2, and in section 3 I'll tell you why you should be interested in me becoming an Admin. Finally, I'll conclude my application in section 4.

While you may have seen me or talked to me on Nukapedia, you may not know me. In this section I'll introduce myself: I'll give some background, tell something about my interests (both wiki-life and real-life), and give some examples of what I've contributed to Nukapedia.

History[]

I joined Nukapedia The Vault somewhere in 2011 as I was playing Fallout 3. I didn't exactly focus on any specific projects; I just added information where I thought it was lacking, and fixed typos and capitalisation wherever I found them. While I enjoyed editing Nukapedia with some regularity, I stopped editing halfway through 2013 as my interest in Fallout waned. Though I edited every now and then after that, I definitively returned in late 2015 after the release of Fallout 4, and I have been active ever since, with Jspoelstra making me a patroller in April 2016. Even though my interest in Fallout 4 started disappearing at some point, I tried to edit and patrol just a little bit every day. However, when the whole Featured Video thing happened a few weeks ago I was woken up again, and my interest was revived.

Interests[]

My main (wiki-life) interests lie in creating and maintaining quality. I thoroughly enjoy diving into the game to record all the details, nitpicking articles and rewriting them, and preventing vandals from destroying our work. Note that a large portion of my recent edits has been dedicated to cleaning up articles rather than adding to articles; this is mainly because I haven't played Fallout for some time.
Please see the achievements section of this request for a detail on projects I have worked on and will work on.

me_irl[]

I'm a student of computer science from the Netherlands, though I'm currently on exchange in Canada. I've been into programming since I was 12. Even though I usually program in C/C++ and Java, I also have considerable (amateur) experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SQL; these skills are useful when editing Nukapedia, but may also come in use if we decided to go for Exodus.

Achievements[]

Now that you know a bit about what I like to do, the question remains what I have done for Nukapedia. Apart from my regular minor edits fixing capitalisation and typos, I've also made some more significant contributions in the past. I'm mainly referring to my cleaning up and making consistent of all the relay towers, my adding of many pages on Fallout 4 weapon mods (such as the automatic barrel), and the unstubbing of many Fallout 4 locations (such as Hopesmarch Pentecostal Church).

Currently, I'm preparing to work on missing Fallout 4 dialogue files and incomplete infoboxes with some other users.

Why am I interested?[]

As an Admin I intend to use the tools shared with the role of Content Moderator: deleting, undeleting, moving, and protecting of pages; and of course the tools I currently possess as a Patroller. Note that I am not interested in the part of Admin that allows me to moderate the chat and /d; not because I dislike them (because they seem nice from the times I've been there!) or because I think they're bad, but because I love editing and simply don't have time to go there. Regardless, as an Admin I will have those powers, and I hope that you trust me that I will not abuse them.

So why am I interested? Because I believe that I can do what I like doing most better than ever if I were an Admin: create and maintain quality content on Nukapedia. I see my role as an Admin as an upgraded version of the patroller, where I can take action myself, directly when and where it is needed.

Why should you be interested?[]

It's nice and all that you know why I'm interested in becoming an Admin, but why should you be interested? After all, even if you trust someone, they should only be appointed if you believe that doing so would be a sincere improvement.

And I believe that I would be a sincere improvement. Of course, there are many other editors out there with way more edits and way larger edits. But I don't think that's important; my main focus is on article quality and completeness, and that is exactly what I'll do. I am a perfectionist and I really dislike seeing inconsistency or incompleteness. But seeing imperfections doesn't make me angry; it makes me motivated to resolve the problem. In my role as a Admin I feel that I would be distinguishable from a patroller in the sense that I become more of a representative of Nukapedia quality. I will be able to better help new editors by example, in addition to how I can currently help them through conversation. I will be able to assist admins without having more power than I need or am interested in, and I think that that is a very important restriction.

Conclusion[]

Even though my work could be desribed as alternating between WikiGnomish and WikiOgrish, I will be here on Nukapedia to keep an eye out and intervene when necessary, discussing when I am uncertain; much like I do now. In that sense, I won't change much. What will change, however, is to what extent I will do that. And I think I could be more valuable to Nukapedia as an Admin.

  3. Yes I like to have faith in people, although you're not very active in chat and my vote isn't as "weighted" as others I think it would help to have another admin around. If not just for the sole purpose of banning vandals and protecting pages since it doesn't look like the Content Moderator position will be working out. 3. Neutral Dekker knew this was coming from me and although I firmly believe he will get the job done with these tools, my concern falls with when he gets thrown under the bus by a community management issue than needs a snap decision and no-one else is there to pick it up. Although me and Dekker have been talking and working together more recently, I don't know him well enough (yet) to be certain of his abilities as an admin. 4. Neutral As an incoming admin, I expect you to have at least a finger in each pie. I dont need a admin to be User:Porter21 , but I do expect em to be able to craft at least a simple template or modify an existing one to do something a little different. Equally, I need em to have a finger in the community side. Content and Community are the twin beasts that feed each other - without one the other falls over. Its okay to have a preference and a focus, but a complete disinterest worries me... I keep bouncing between a soft no, and a neutral, I think this is where I'm going to land. 6. Neutral I may be a bit late here updating my vote, but I have to agree with Agent C. I wouldn't say no per se, but I think some more editing in different regions may be warranted first. |\| () |\/| /\ |) | Talk | Discord | NMC 13:59, October 23, 2017 (UTC)

You're applying for a position that nukapdeia does not have. You might as well be applying for chief dishwasher, since we dont have those either. You can apply for admin, or, you can apply for chat mod, which effectively makes you a wiki moderator. Pick one. I dont think it's a problem at all for soemone to apply for the admin toolkit based on the need for the tools, rather than some desire to police the community. Thats exactly what i did. If you need the admin toolset to do your work, but arent intersted in using the other tools like the ability to moderate /d, who cares? Ask for the tools. Dont moderate /d. Be upfront and if folks think you can use the tools to edit and dont care if you moderate /d or not, youll get them. But what i dont want to see is people applying for positions we dont have. And i hope this isnt some kind of end run to get around the discussion we had on patrollers and content moderator tools, since that went nowhere so far. If you dont want to run for admin or wiki moderator (chat mod rights), let me know and ill close this request. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 03:52, October 15, 2017 (UTC)

My problem with becoming an admin is that I do not expect support from a part of the community that I do not know, yet will have control over. When I talked to an admin about my application for admin, they said they were uncertain of whether to support this because they knew my edits, but not me. My power would exceed what is strictly necessary for my purposes, and that may worry some members of the community. I was hoping that applying for the role of Content Moderator would be a way around this problem, but judging by your response it clearly isn't.
Understanding that my request in its current status will not yield much fruit I will change it into a request to become an Admin instead. If it turns out that I am not well-known enough by the community, so be it.
Please bear with me while I update it; the changes shouldn't be too significant.

I won't ask you for a one-on-one dinner to form my opinion about you. I've seen your name enough on the RC to know a bit about you. I also took a look at your contributions and I think you have a pretty positive impact on the wiki. I'm not sure I understood the purpose of your application: What do you need the admin tools for? Do you have something in mind specifically or do you mostly want to add a person to do the day-to-day admin tasks (vandal control, page protection, ...)? --YOD ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ 23:48, October 15, 2017 (UTC)

Good question. It's exactly what you say: vandal control, page protection, page deletion, etc. Of course, an admin has more power than doing just that, but I'm afraid there is no lower rank that gives me those tools (except for Content Moderator, but this rank does not exist on Nukapedia), so I'm going for Admin instead.

Withdrawal[]

After careful consideration I have decided to withdraw my adminship request.

When I changed my request from Content Moderator to Admin, I thought I knew what I wanted. However, as Agent C noted, my application clearly shows that Admin is not the right role for me: "Its okay to have a preference and a focus, but a complete disinterest worries me." My focus is editing, not administrating or community, and if I were to become an Admin I would be forced to lose this focus. Therefore, I believe that Patroller and Content Moderator are the right roles for me, and since the latter is not an option, I will have to stay with the former.

The mixed reaction to my request has had a positive effect on me personally: I have come to realise that I am actually already very happy with where I am, and it has prevented me from ending up where I wouldn't be happy. I'd like to thank everyone who commented or voted - regardless of what they commented or voted.
