Forums: Index > Wiki discussion > Administratorship Request - Limmiegirl

Hello again folks. My name is Limmiegirl, and you may remember me from previous requests such as Moderator Request - Limmiegirl. In fact, I'll be recycling a lot of that previous request, in addition to updating what I've done during this in-between month.

I'm currently an elected moderator here in Nukapedia, and after being encouraged to by a few other users, I'd like now to request adminship. I've been a member since February 21st, 2011 (already a whole year!), despite being a lurker anon long long since before (back in the D&C days, actually). I have never been banned or sanctioned, and despite a few frictions, never been on bad terms for long with anybody. At the time of writing, I have exactly 1.186 article edits, plus 36 file and 10 template edits, adding up to 1.232 mainspace edits. I've been (the very first to be :P ) granted patrollership status last January 26th by Kingclyde, and elected moderator last February 9th.

Apart from many random corrections of overlinking, double redirects, and non-notable notes/loot, I've helped kickstart the Bug Verification Project. When I started bug sections were notoriously messy, inconsistent, wrong or outright vandalized; by now, while there's still lots work to be done it's not nearly as common to stumble upon problematic bug sections. Of course, I cannot claim credit for that as it was and still is a community drive with many users helping out. But I do think I was a strong influence in it, first by working almost by myself, then encouraging volunteers to join, helping clarifying doubts and making the rules well-known. After I felt the Bug Project had enough momentum to continue on its own, I've recently moved my focus to the Fallout 3 Locations Project (most my contributions start at M).

So what would I bring to the table as an administrator? Apart from a guarantee of fulfilling the job prescriptions and zealously abiding to and enforcing the rules, I will also strive to bring the basic wiki fundamentals of assuming good faith, encouraging bold editing and learn by doing, and offering help back to the foreground.

Edit count

There should have been a list of this user's edit counts here, but the edit counts feature is no longer available.

About me

Although I'll be the first to say I have some pretty strong opinions and am not shy to defend them, I always try to be polite, respectful, and clear, not taking things personally and upholding the wiki directive of Assuming Good Faith. I short, I argue, but don't fight. Also, I'm always glad to help when asked, and whenever I revert somebody's edit I'll explain either in the edit summary, or leave a note on their talkpage (in fact, I'm pretty big on explaining edits on the summary). Finally, while I'm not above making mistakes (specially since I believe in being bold when editing), I always try to learn from them, and always make sure the same won't happen twice. In fact, I'm not at all afraid to mercilessly track down and revert my own mistakes once I'm aware of them.

Notes

While probing around I've received (surprisingly) mostly positive feedback. However three worries have been brought up, and I'd like to preemptively address them here:

"You've only become moderator early this month. Don't you think it's a bit too soon to request adminship as well? Moving on so quickly shows lack of commitment."

It is true that my moderatorship request came less than 20 days ago. However, I don't see it as moving on. Just like my being granted chat-moderation rights didn't interfere with my patroller and editing duties (as evidentiated by my contributions' steady rise), the administrative duties will not interfere with the previous ones. I'll still be around chat making sure things stay orderly, I'll still patrol recent edits in search of mistakes and vandalism, and I'll still edit and contribute to my projects. But also in addition to that I'll be banning vandals and trolls, and protecting pages directly, moderating blog comments, and generally participating in the wiki's administrative affairs.

"Your edit count is barely above the minimum required"

My current mainspace edit count is 1.232 edits, or 232 edits above the minimum. But I believe the looking at the edit count alone as a measure of the contributions (or edit-count myopia as I call it) of a user is both misleading and outright wrong. As anybody who has any experience with wikis can attest to, it's ridiculously easy milk edits by say correcting typos and other minor edits, and although they certainly have their worth, they marginally add very little to the wiki. Adding content on the other hand, takes effort, time, and yield far less edits per time spent, and yet that's the kind of work wikis need most.

To verify a bug, for instance, you have to set up your game in the manner closest to the one described, and then repeat the triggers again and again, and then refer to the GECK for debugging. To properly write or rewrite a location's article, you have to specifically set out to explore the area in question, take notes as you do so, talk with NPC, read terminals and etc to gather backstories and background information, search in the GECK for notable features, spawn points and enemy types, taking pictures, and then of course compile the final version of the article. Even to add simple things such as objects' base IDs can take a surprising amount of time to check in the GECK. The time spent doing that kind of work would generate, with no exaggeration, three or four times more edits if it were spent on more menial tasks.

"You lack experience"

That's partially true as well. I have only been actively involved in the wiki's affairs for the last five months or so. However, I've been following the wiki for a long time, and know pretty, and at any rate I've certainly picked up the slack lately, and now I can safely say I know about pretty much all the major happenings around, administrative affairs and otherwise. Also, since the split almost all the experienced staffers have left us, either partially or completely, in favor of the Vault, draining us of experienced administrators. Had the split never happened, I probably certainly wouldn't be making this request at this time. But given that it has happened, and how undermined it has left us, I do believe I could make a very positive addition to the staff. While I admittedly am still not very knowledgeable of templates and such, I am making an active effort to learn. I also have played and own every Fallout game (I played FOBOS, but do not own it), and as a modder I'm quite comfortable with the GECK. So at least as far as content goes, I have more than enough qualifications to assume this position.

Conclusion

Well, that's all I could to tooth my own horn :) Now please make sure to vote fairly and honestly if you feel I'm the right girl for this job, if I'm not, or if you really have no idea either way. If you do, then thank you so much for the trust, and please take my word I won't disappoint. If you don't, that's perfectly okay and I promise I won't bear grudges, but please explain why so I can correct it in the future. Thanks for reading! • SaintPain: No need for more admins? As long as I've been here whether or not admins were needed has not been a necessity. And as it is there are still occassionally gaps where no one with admin rights is online. If it helps reduce the gaps then I don't see a problem. User:Great_MaraMessage 03:39, February 27, 2012 (UTC)
Not to mention, if we look at the previous list of admins back when we where known as the Vault prior to the split it was huge and we all managed then, we had a large community and we still do today, so quite frankly the more admins the better.AaaaaTheNemesisx 04:09, February 27, 2012 (UTC)

Why are comments aimed at me ? ~ I did not offer any original statment that She he or it spoke aganist the nominatiation. I only said I agree with the opinions that were stated before, the ones "she" argued against with weak counterpoints.. "She made the point that it is to soon and more original contributions should be made on her own part..

Just pointing out spelling and grammer errors dose not make a better editor. Maybe "She" could contribute more as an honest editor and not just repost other images or nit pick.

Admins should be part of the community. That is my point. It should not be a popularity contest.

She brought up these points to counter them, which I think she did effectively. If you think otherwise you've either failed to read them properly (which in no way would surprised me) or you've just decided to belligerently ignore them, anyway. Note that I'm in no way trying to call your no vote unjustified, just countering what you put up here.

As far as a "popularity contest", it isn't. The new administrators have been elected due to necessity, not popularity, and Limmie I think does fill the shoes of an administrator quite nicely, even if it's a tad early in my opinion. Hell, if anyone got in on sheer popularity, it was me.

Even though you might not agree with it, I would advise you not to call it a "power grab". It implies that making her admin would have a lot larger consequences than they actually have.

Okay, listen. All of you. Saint, if you want to vote no, vote no. It's your opinion, and we as a community are here to respect it regardless of if we agree with it. But please don't make a big deal out of it, there are enough issues on the wiki to worry about than starting an argument over a vote. That goes for the rest of you. If SaintPain wants to vote no, we aren't to scrutinise him for it. He's a human with an opinion just like the rest of us, and if he doesn't want any more admins then he has the right to say so. Let's all get over this and stop what I fear will soon lead to a large Wiki-Wide argument. Any further comments on the matter can be considered flamebaiting and will be dealt with accordingly. All I'll say about this is that you're making some pretty nasty assumptions about somebody you know nothing about, and without nothing to back them up apart from vague insinuations and insults. And seriously, "she", She he or it and Jill could be Bill? It's not as clever as you think it is, and it's easier to respect a direct, honest accusation than feeble, insinuative affronts. The "no girls in the internet" routine is pretty childish and pathetic as it is, and coupled with your presumption of everybody else in here being undersexed, ironically enough tells more about yourself than it does about me or them.

PS: I'm nothing disputing your vote, as that 's completely your prerogative. But it's sad that you chose to justify it in such a sad way when you could have been constructive, or at least direct. Limmiegirl Lildeneb Talk! ♪ 12:45, February 27, 2012 (UTC)

Who, me?

I can partially understand where Saint is coming from. (Although his wording is a little off in my opinion.) I agree that she would make the popular vote and I have come to understand that quite a few people lately have been complaining about the Administration here and how many mods/chat/mods/Admins we currently have and are building up. So yeah, I agree that he has a legitimate opinion and it should be respected. (Although it was wrong for him to state that this is a power grab. I'm sorry Saint, but you cannot know her motivation and aspirations. Edit: Ah, and I missed that little joke of yours. I'm going to ask you not to ever insult someone like that again. Whether she is a girl or a guy has no right to be questioned on a wiki for information. Leave her be on that subject.) Anyways, I agree with Yessie that this doesn't need to become a fight. Let everyone state there opinions in a civil manner. Dragon Skål! 12:42, February 27, 2012 (UTC)
