Food refers to non-Chem healing items in the Fallout series that heal a small amount of Hit Points when consumed. Some can also boost or reduce certain player statistics such as Damage or Action Points, though most only inflict a small dose of Radiation. Originally, the developers planned to implement a system requiring the player to eat. The idea was scrapped, but food was not removed from the game. The idea returned in Fallout: New Vegas in the form of Hardcore mode, and in Fallout 4 in the revamped Survival mode, which was released on the 6th of May 2016.

Some of the most readily available foodstuffs in the Fallout series are packaged pre-War food, still edible thanks to their preservatives as well as sterilization from being irradiated. Some mutant plants and animals can be harvested for food as well. Though cheaper and more abundant than stimpaks and other healing chems, food is somewhat riskier to rely on for healing, as most foodstuffs in the wasteland is tainted with radiation, or otherwise has some drawbacks as well as benefits. Food also has weight, unlike stimpaks. Overall, caution should be taken before eating or drinking.

Edibles and beveragesEdit

There are many different types of food and drinks throughout the series.
