A flare is a thrown weapon that appears in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics and Van Buren. Flares, or fusees, are a type of pyrotechnic that burns with brilliant light and intense heat for a short duration, typically from ten to sixty minutes. They are commonly used as a signaling device, such as highway distress signals, to indicate obstacles or an impending situation that requires caution. They can also be used as a light source, or as an incendiary device.

A flare creates light for a short period of time. The paper is a little worn, but otherwise it is in good condition. The top needs to be twisted to activate it. When thrown, any targets standing in the vicinity of the flare are treated as if in daylight, making them a lot easier to hit with ranged attacks.

The signal flare is a device which was cut from the final version of the Fallout 3 add-on Operation: Anchorage. The inventory image and world model are the same as that of a standard frag grenade. It is set to only be usable by the player. It deals almost no damage and has no script assigned to it. After it is thrown, it simply disappears. Mid-flight, however, the red "danger" HUD icon for a grenade will appear on-screen.
