William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857 – March 8, 1930) was the 27th President of the United States of America, serving from 1909 to 1913.
Background[]
William Howard Taft was Theodore Roosevelt's hand-picked successor for president in 1908. Running as a Republican, Taft found Roosevelt's endorsement crucial to his victory. As president, although he followed Roosevelt's antitrust suit, Taft led a far more conservative administration than his predecessor. The following election, Taft was again nominated for the Republican party as party leaders appreciated this conservatism, but he was soon overshadowed by the popular Theodore Roosevelt, running in a third party, and the determined Woodrow Wilson, who was backed by the Democratic party; Taft received only 8 electoral votes and the support of only two states. Despite a stressful presidency, Taft was able to accomplish his dream of becoming a Supreme Court Justice, a position he held in his later years until he resigned shortly before his death in 1930.
