The surgical mask is a piece of headwear in Fallout 3.

Variants

There are two variants of the surgical mask in the game files, one unused and the other worn by James during the Lone Wanderer's birth.

The unused version grants bonuses of 5 points each to Medicine, Poison Resistance as well Radiation Resistance and has a Damage Resistance of 1. The one worn by James lacks the effects and has no damage resistance but has higher item health and value; it also has no name.

Neither variant can be repaired with other items.

Broken Steel adds a third surgical mask, also unused, also unable to be repaired by other items.

Notes

• James' version will show up as <Missing Name> in the Pip-Boy inventory.
• The unused version was apparently intended to be used in the Wasteland Survival Guide quest, as its G.E.C.K. ID starts with "MS03" (which is the internal designation for aforementioned quest).
• This item has carried over to Fallout: New Vegas in the game files, and can be obtained through console commands.

Appearances

Two versions of the surgical mask are found in the game files of Fallout 3 and a third version is found in the game files of the Fallout 3 add-on, Broken Steel. Two are not actually used in the game and the other is only used during a cutscene. As such, none of them can be obtained normally without the use of console commands.
