Kheee! First, build throne. Then take rocket. Kheee! Some of my shiny friends help me. What time is it? Scuttle-and-bustle time. Kheee! The sun is hot. But the throne is cool. Khee-akaahhh-kuhhh... oh, me insides don't feel right. Sleepy time. Kheee!— Roach King, Fallout 3 Official Game Guide

The Roach King is a hostile inhabitant of the Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3.

Background[]

As his name suggests, the Roach King has somehow tamed radroaches and has thus become their "king." Believed to be insane,[Non-game 1] he is known to speak in very simple English, interjected by odd onomatopoeia imitating roaches.[Non-game 2] He patrols his modest territory with a minigun drawn, hostile to all humans as far as anyone knows.

The Roach King's throne is located northeast of Minefield and directly west of the Temple of the Union, due north of the Regulator HQ. Consisting of tires, a padded dining chair, a clock, and a rocket playset, the throne was assembled by the Roach King himself.[Non-game 2] He began constructing the throne with the aspiration of acquiring the rocket playset.[Non-game 2]

Notes[]

  • The Roach King's entry in the Wasteland Census is written from his perspective, describing how he constructed the throne and was supposedly helped in doing so by the radroaches.[Non-game 2]
    • This is the only Fallout 3-related text which contextualizes the Roach King, as he does not speak and is not obviously connected to any other lore.
  • The Roach King does not have a set face, meaning his appearance is randomly generated when he is encountered. He may even have an apparently female body. He always has the same facial hair.
  • The Roach King's character data uses the template "LvlRaiderSpecial." Although not explicitly confirmed, this may be why the Roach King can spawn with an apparently female body.
  • The Roach King does not have unique voice lines, but uses the generic dialogue of a raider. The voice lines heard from the Roach King will correspond to the apparent body model that the Roach King has spawned as. If the Roach King spawns with a male body, the dialogue is voiced by James Lewis, while if the Roach King spawns with a female body, the dialogue is voiced by Shari Elliker.
  • The Roach King may be attacked and killed by the radscorpions, raiders, or deathclaws who wander nearby. In this event, he will probably be found dead near his throne.
  • Although the Roach King is a hostile character, the Lone Wanderer will lose Karma for stealing from the boxes near his throne.
  • A mini nuke can be found inside the throne.
  • The Roach King is featured somewhat prominently in Fallout Shelter Online. He has his own load screen art as well as several alternate costumes, and is considered a powerful character for high-level play. When in combat or leaving the Vault to explore, the Roach King is followed by a separate roach NPC with its own health bar.

The sparsely populated Northeast Territories are dominated by two large areas of interest—the Old Olney township and its surrounding area and the Greener Pastures Disposal Site. Old Olney was once a quaint place to visit on the weekends. Now it's a place you go to die. Ravenous Deathclaws prowl the streets, and Scavengers have picked the surrounding hamlets clean. Greener Pastures is simply a gigantic irradiated area, full of its own surprises. Consider heading to the Republic of Dave; an envoy from the Wasteland might be welcomed by this power-mad oddball and his clan. There are also farms, a dangerous ghost town filled with mines, and the Temple of the Abolitionists' Union to search for, too. And don't forget the Roach King; he may be the craziest of all!"
