Various swords serve as melee weapons in Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, Fallout 76 and Fallout Shelter. The label of "sword" encompasses a wide variety of blades used for slashing and thrusting attacks.

As tools designed solely to kill humans, swords in the post-industrial era were usually ceremonial.[Non-game 1] The post-War era saw renewed interests in swords.

Wakizashi[]

A wakizashi is a type of Japanese sword with a blade length between 12 and 23 inches (30 and 60 centimeters), similar to but shorter than a katana. The wakizashi is usually not a primary weapon for samurai and was often worn together with the katana. The pairing of a katana with a wakizashi is called the daishō. However, by 2241, the Yakuza gangs ignore this tradition and instead use it as a primary weapon. Additionally, some shishkebabs are modified wakizashis.

Katana[]

A katana is a type of Japanese sword with a blade length between 23.6 and 28.7 inches (60-73 centimeters), characterized by its distinctive slender, curved blade and long grip, separated by a flat handguard. Renowned for its utility in close-quarters combat, its origins go back at least as far as the Kamakura Period. In feudal Japan, katanas were generally wielded with two hands, to maximize the weight behind each strike, though some techniques and combat styles were performed with a one-handed grip. The katana was generally carried in a saya, a scabbard made from lightweight lacquered wood.

  1. Fallout: The Roleplaying Game Rulebook p. 112: "Swords have been in use for almost as long as wars have been fought and remained widespread as symbols of status and prestige amongst soldiers—particularly officers—across the world right up until the Great War. Many of the swords found in the wastelands are those used by Chinese officers during the Great War, often taken from battlefields as a trophy by American troops. Others are museum pieces or replicas from private collections, with many resembling the cavalry sabers used during the American Revolution."
