Come on. Let's see if they've got anything to drink in this dump.

Paladin Vargas is a Brotherhood of Steel soldier and sergeant of the elite Lyons' Pride squad in Fallout 3. He is initially encountered patrolling the lobby of the Galaxy News Radio building. After completing the Following in His Footsteps quest, he can be seen patrolling the Citadel. When traveling across the bridge during the quest Take it Back!, Vargas could be killed. If he does survive, he will disappear from the game.

Background[]

Paladin Vargas is a professional soldier with little capacity for nonsense. Although he is four years older than Sentinel Lyons, he is a sergeant of the Lyons' Pride, responsible for managing the squad and carrying out her orders. He is her right hand, providing her with his experience, advice, and mentoring the Sentinel when needed. The two have a very close friendship, though they both maintain professionalism at all times.[Non-game 1]

In particular, Vargas is responsible for evaluating Pride candidates, such as Initiate Reddin.[1] He keeps them on a tight leash, shutting down any signs of a gung-ho attitude, believing that they will get their fill of death soon enough. Even as a coping mechanism, he finds it unacceptable.[2] Once that is taken care of, he can be a very patient teacher, especially with those who show promise as a Brotherhood soldier.[3] As a result, he typically gets quite attached to his subordinates, whether proper Pride members or just candidates, and each death leaves its mark - particularly if they are pointless, like Reddin's during the GNR battle.[4] In times like these, Sarah treats him not as a subordinate, but a friend, consoling him.[5]

Vargas keeps a copy of Guns and Bullets under his bunk. Unknown to him, Squire Maxson sneaks in and reads it whenever Vargas is away.[6]

He has no relation to Nathaniel Vargas or Manya Vargas of Megaton.[Non-game 1]
