I love mugs so much, I just might kill myself!

Muggy is a robot residing in the Sink in Big MT in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.

Background[]

Muggy was designed to be a neurotic, sentient, highly self-aware, miniature securitron by Doctor 0[1] as an expression of 0's own hatred for Robert House and RobCo Industries. Unlike other securitrons, Muggy's screen does not feature a policeman, soldier, or broken face, instead displaying a cartoon version of a smiling coffee cup.

Muggy is programmed to be obsessed with cleaning coffee mugs, and fully aware of this obsession as well as his inability to stop or do anything about it.[2] In an ironic way, this not only shows his advanced design compared to almost all other RobCo robots, but also Dr. 0's ability in robotics and artificial intelligence.

Muggy harbors a deep-seated resentment of Dr. 0 for creating him which deepened after 0 became a Think Tank.[1] He blames Dr. 0 for his creation, and the futility of his existence after Dr. 0 and the other Big MT executives turned themselves into think tank robots. As robots, they no longer needed to meet biological needs such as eating or drinking, resulting in a complete lack of dirty, used dishes for him to clean.[2] He is also angered by the idea of all the dirty dishes strewn around the research center and beyond with nobody to clean them.[3]

Muggy's hatred for Dr. 0 runs so deep that after the Courier confronts the scientists in their dome, he frantically asks if they violently killed him, although the Courier never confirms 0's fate to him.[4]

At some point before or during the Courier's time in Big MT, Muggy was tricked by the biological research station into looking for a coffee mug inside its chassis, for which the mini securitron was then "seeded."

Should the Courier have discovered Higgs Village before the final confrontation, it's shown in an ending that Muggy ended up accidentally locking himself in there trying to clean the dirty dishes. He then comes to enjoy the solitude and being able to clean up the old kitchens of the Think Tank professors, but deliberately leaving 0's house dirty as a form of revenge. If they did not discover Higgs Village before the ending, Muggy gets a flat tire just out of reach of a coffee cup, and the resulting outburst causes his brain to explode.

After being upgraded, Muggy, through an interactive request, will provide the Courier with all of the following once a day:

Notes[]

  • While Muggy can be targeted in V.A.T.S., he cannot die without the use of console commands, as no weapons deal any damage to him, nor is it possible to use the Robotics Expert perk to shut him down.
  • Muggy is the only Sink character able to move around "freely" and thus the only one which shows up as a mark on the compass. Though it is possible that in some cases the tick mark does not appear, it is uncertain whether this is a glitch or not.
  • Muggy seems to be one of the few robotic characters that realize the Great War took place and that considerable time has passed since then.
  • Muggy is the only recurring source of pistol powder outside of purchases.
  • If by some chance Muggy is forced to enter combat (usually only through console codes and even then only with another NPC, since Muggy will not enter combat with the Courier under any circumstance, even using the console to start combat with them will make him immediately cease combat), Muggy will never engage in any fighting and will always flee.
  • If the Sink's personality matrices are disabled by the Sink CIU, Muggy will still have his face on and will continue to move.
  • Muggy is still affected by the fatigue damage dealt by boxing tape and the cattle prod, so he can be knocked unconscious.
  • Muggy can also be knocked unconscious by shooting him with pulse slugs.
  • Using Muggy's ability to break down coffee mugs into empty syringes in conjunction with the biological research station's ability to convert plant matter into Salient Green which can be used to make cloned samples of broc flower and xandar root, with a Science skill of 70 and the workbench in the Sink, one can create a virtually unlimited amount of stimpaks.
  • Muggy was originally intended to be a possible "full" companion, this idea was cut, due to lack of development time.[Non-game 1]

  1. 1.0 1.1 The Courier: "Who are you?"
Muggy: "You... you really want to know about... me? No one ever asks about Muggy! You've made me so happy! Maybe you've seen some of those big, imposing Securitrons with their lovely laser guns and rocket launchers and scary faces? I'm not one of those. Dr. O was always jealous of House Industries, and he thought it would be fucking hilarious to build a tiny neurotic Securitron. Big fucking laugh. So, umm... you got any coffee cups for me now?"
    (Muggy's dialogue)
  2. 2.0 2.1 The Courier: "You seem really obsessed with mugs."
Muggy: "Of course I'm obsessed! They made me this way! You think I don't know how crazy I sound? Of course I do! They programmed me to know that, too! They made me just to torture me. But you know, it's the neglect that hurts the most. "Hey everybody, let's turn ourselves into robot brains in jars!" Do you know how many coffee cups giant robot brains in jars use on a daily basis? Not fucking many!"
    (Muggy's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "Mugs? Why do you want mugs?"
Muggy: "Why do you want mugs? Huh? You some kind of sick mug hoarder? Oh god, give me the coffee cup, please! It's sitting there in your pack, taunting me! Sorry... I'm sorry. I got a little carried away. It's just all those goddamn dirty dishes out there with no one to clean them! It breaks my heart!"
    (Muggy's dialogue)
  4. Muggy: "Please, please, please tell me you stomped Dr. O's brain into a fine paste! Did he squeal? Did he beg? God, I hope he begged! Who's the flatware bitch now, O?!"
    (Muggy's dialogue)
