Outsiders are a rare sight at the Fort. Step carefully around here and you might just leave alive. I'm Antony, master of the hounds.

Antony is a houndmaster for Caesar's Legion living at the Fort in 2281.

Background[]

Antony is a former member of the Hangdogs, a tribe hailing from Denver, Colorado known for their reverence for dogs as Hangdog spirit animals. Before Lanius put the hounds of the tribe to the torch and assimilated the tribe, he was an ardent worshiper of the Denver hounds.[1][2] When the Legion broke him and the rest of his tribesmen, he repressed the painful memories and put his talents to work as houndmaster.[3] A lifetime of working with canines certainly bore fruit, as his are some of the finest war dogs in the Legion.

Even if the Hangdogs have been wiped from history, Antony's mongrels are his life; he thinks very highly of their ability and finds them worthy of the utmost respect.[4][5] Lupa, the mother of many of the Legion's best hounds, is one of Antony's favorite bitches, and would go to lengths to have her be made immortal, such as having her brain implanted in a cyberdog.[6][7]

Antony is harsh towards the Legion's slaves, even the child Melody. He considers it a privilege that she is even allowed to wear clothes, and when he discovered she had a teddy bear, he confiscated it and gave it to his dogs as a chew toy.[8] He gave the toy to his dogs, whom chewed it up.[9]

Notes[]

  • During the quest Nothin' But a Hound Dog, if the Courier orders Rex to stay before approaching Antony, they will get the same special dialogue as if Rex was still present.
  • When referring to his past with the Hangdogs before their assimilation into the Legion, Antony speaks with noticeable anguish in his voice, a rare trait amongst legionaries.

References[]

  1. The Courier: "How did you end up joining the Legion?"
Antony: "When the Legion showed up, we fought, most tribes did. Hangdogs hung out longer than most... broke us by throwing our dogs on the fire. So we gave up, our elders couldn't bear the idea of our spirit animals burning in the afterlife. Still, Caesar was impressed enough to conscript us, use our skills with dogs to join the Legion as houndmasters."
    (Antony's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "Tell me about yourself."
Antony: "I've been around dogs all my life. They're my life, always were - all the way back when I was a tribal, one of the Hangdogs, outside Denver. Dogs roamed that city. Our tribe made peace with them. Thought they were our spirit animals - helped us hunt, provided for us in some lean times. Then the Legion came. Good thing, too. Stronger now, don't need those beliefs anymore."
    (Antony's dialogue)
  3. Antony: "Outsiders are a rare sight at the Fort. Step carefully around here and you might just leave alive. I'm Antony, master of the hounds."
    (Antony's dialogue)
  4. The Courier: "I'm here for Melody's bear."
Antony: "The stupid girl should know by now that even the rags on her back are a privilege. Anyway, my mongrels like their new toy. Tell you what - you square off with four of my best dogs. No armor and no weapons except a machete. You survive and I let you have the bear. You ready to fight my mongrels, then?"
The Courier: "Potentially losing four dogs is a very high price to pay for a toy. What about two?"
Antony: "[SUCCEEDED] All right, two it is. They'll still be more than enough to take you down, I think."
The Courier: "You won't mind if I kill them?"
Antony: "I think they'll probably end up killing you. I trained them myself. But, if you do win somehow, the mongrels will at least get honorable deaths."
    (Antony's dialogue)
  5. The Courier: "Is that a yes?"
Antony: "You give Lupa a worthy death in the arena, and her brain is yours. Don't let your guard down just because she's old, though. Oh, and standard arena rules still apply. You don't get to wear armor and you get only a machete for a weapon."
    (Antony's dialogue)
  6. The Courier: "Nice dog."
Antony: "Lupa? Yes, she's the mother of a lot of our best dogs. She's getting old, but she's still a tough old bitch. Aren't you, girl?"
    (Antony's dialogue)
  7. The Courier: "I could use Lupa's brain to fix my cyber-dog."
Antony: "Cyber-dog? Like the ones I've seen up in Denver? I know what you're talking about, and it would make Lupa immortal in a way."
    (Antony's dialogue)
  8. The Courier: "Why did Antony take him away?"
Melody: "Antony said he was punishing me for trying to hide it from the Legion."
    (Melody's dialogue)
