Murphy is a ghoul scientist living inside Northwest Seneca Station in 2277.
Background[]
Murphy has set up a small laboratory inside the station, from which he and his assistant Barrett are attempting to synthesize and sell the potent chem Ultrajet, as regular Jet has a limited effect on ghouls.[1][Non-game 1] However, although he has an abundance of two of the three ingredients required to make Ultrajet, he is missing the third, Sugar Bombs, and is more than willing to employ the Lone Wanderer in an attempt to acquire sums of it - despite initially being paranoid that they have come to steal his Ultrajet formula.[2][3]
His assistant acts primarily as a bodyguard, but can also be seen assisting Murphy with other tasks.[4]

Bugs[]
- Sometimes, it will take a few seconds for the game to register that the Lone Wanderer has given Murphy any or all of their Sugar Bombs. The player character will say "Here's all the Sugar Bombs I've got," but will not receive any caps nor will they be removed from their inventory. Trying this a few times, as well as waiting for up to 30 seconds before speaking to Murphy again, seems to get it to work. [verified]
- Fawkes in their party, Murphy will turn hostile towards him and Fawkes will attack Murphy. [verified] Sometimes, if one has
- If the ammo is pickpocketed from Murphy and then, in turn, his weapon as well, after 72 in-game hours, both the ammo and weapon will respawn inside his inventory. This bug, however, does not replace his inventory with his old one; thus if one reverse-pickpockets items into his inventory, they will not disappear. [verified]
- It is very rare, but after killing Murphy, and then stealing something off of a shelf or from his area, a sound byte of him yelling "Stop, thief!" will play, even though he is dead. [verified]
References[]
- ↑ The Lone Wanderer: "Ultrajet? That some sort of super chem?"
Murphy: "I suppose you could say that. Ultrajet is almost double the potency of Jet... perfect for Ghouls. Jet barely affects us you see. Only trouble is it's almost impossible to gather the ingredients together. Say, you might be able to help me with that!"
(Murphy’s dialogue) - ↑ The Lone Wanderer: "Yeah sure, what do you need?"
Murphy: "It takes 3 things to make Ultrajet. Two of the ingredients I got plenty of. The other one is a little harder to find: Sugar Bombs."
(Murphy’s dialogue) - ↑ Murphy: "You're n..not here to try and steal my secrets are you?"
The Lone Wanderer: "Steal your secrets? Not at all."
Murphy: "Good. I was afraid I was gonna have to abandon my lab here. That would mean starting all over again."
(Murphy’s dialogue) - ↑ The Lone Wanderer: "What's the deal with Barrett?"
Murphy: "He's my assistant and my backup. In case things get rough. I wouldn't mess with him if I were you."

"Murphy:
Murphy was an amateur scientist even back in his pre-Ghoul days, and his tenacity has allowed him to deal with his "affliction." He's close to making some real Caps with his invention—an enhanced dose of Jet that can keep a Ghoul up and peaking, as Jet has only limited effects on these creatures."
