Eventually, I went back and married my childhood sweetheart and that was the end of my traveling days. Didn't miss it none then. Still don't.Doc Mitchell

Doc Mitchell's house is an unmarked location within Goodsprings in the Mojave Wasteland in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

Originally a pre-War building from when the town of Goodsprings was first built, by 2281, it has become the residence of Doc Mitchell. He previously lived there with his late wife after they were evicted from Vault 21 by Mr. House and attempted to travel to New California. However, due to her stunted immune system from living most of their lives isolated in a Vault, Mitchell's wife passed away from a disease and he opted to remain in Goodsprings, eventually become the town's sole physician.[1]

Layout[]

Situated on the northwest side of the town, the house is a single-story building with a living room, clinic area, kitchen, bedroom, restroom, and a small storage room. The living room houses the Vit-o-matic Vigor Tester. Some stimpaks and doctor's bags are located on a table next to the Vigor Tester machine. A copy of Today's Physician is located on a bench near the operating table.

In the clinic room, there is a chemistry set. With a Science skill of 25, the player character can either create 5 stimpaks or some chems. To the right of the chemistry set is a broken 9mm submachine gun. It cannot be picked up, but it can be moved. With a Repair skill of 25, the player character can fix the weapon and it will be added to their inventory. Nearby, a metal box is found containing a laser pistol along with a random amount of energy cells.

Notes[]

  • The flagpole in the house's front yard is flying the state flag of Nevada, the only instance of it in the game.
  • The bed in the clinic (where the player character awakens) and Doc Mitchell's personal bed are the only things in the house that are marked "owned" and cannot be used to sleep.
  • Moving the brahmin skull on the shelf in the living room will result in a pop-up reading "Good! Now press [grab button] again to let go of the skull." This is a hold-over from a cut section of Ain't That a Kick in the Head, where the player would've been taught how to drag and move objects, similar to a section of Baby Steps in Fallout 3 that taught the same.
  • If Run Goodsprings Run is completed and Joe Cobb is still alive, he will reside in the house after Doc Mitchell is dead.
  • There is no navmesh (pathing which tells NPCs and creatures what terrain they are allowed to travel on) in the doorway between the entrance hall and the doctor's office. Because of this, Doc Mitchell and any followers will take the long way around and loop through the living room when trying to enter or exit; this can be exploited to avoid a character that is hostile.

Appearances[]

Doc Mitchell's house appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes[]

  • According to Joshua Sawyer, the items in Doc Mitchell's house are not marked as owned so that the player character would not be able to turn Doc Mitchell hostile before character creation was completed.[Non-game 1]
  • A small note floats above this map, outside of the boundaries of gameplay. Interacting with it through exploits triggers the Hardcore mode prompt. This note stores the prompt, and activates automatically upon approaching Doc Mitchell's front door during normal gameplay.

  1. The Courier: "Is that when you settled out here with your wife?"
Doc Mitchell: "Eventually we made our way out here. But uh... Well, when folks spend their lives in isolation, sometimes that ain't the best of things for learning to fight off germs. We was going to California, but Goodsprings was as far as we got. After she passed, wasn't no reason to keep going. I stayed so I could keep close to her."

Non-game

  1. JE Sawyer on Formspring:
Anonymous: "Hi Josh. Are the items in Doc Mitchell's house supposed to be taken freely by players as a basic loadout, or just their ownership not set properly?"
JESawyer: "No ownership is set on those items so the player can't force hostility prior to exiting character creation. If the player wants to grab everything in his house, it's not going to dramatically affect anything."
