Another BEAUTIFUL Reno day. The devil must be dancing a jig.

Leslie Anne Bishop is the neglected wife of mob boss John Bishop, found at the Shark Club in New Reno in Fallout 2. She can trigger one of the endings for the Bishops.

Background[]

An attractive, middle-aged woman, fond of low-cut dresses made from golden gecko leather,[2] and plagued by constant boredom and distractions,[3][4] Leslie Anne has the misfortune of being married to one of New Reno's most corrupt men: John Bishop, the head of the Bishop family. Though she relishes the power and influence it brings,[5] it is poor compensation for a loveless marriage and a "family" of thugs, mercs, drug pushers, and assorted slaves. John is an incredibly neglectful husband, preoccupied with accumulating power, and treating Leslie as a trophy wife.[6]

Leslie Anne grew up in Vault City, where she received the finest education in New California, assisted by various memory enhancers used to imprint knowledge directly into the brain. She took one of them as a memento when she left, becoming one of the only women with higher education in New Reno.[1] Her departure from Vault City was not voluntary, and she does not like to reflect on it: She was forced to trade the safety of the city for the glitter of New Reno, and a potential career for a place where women are primarily seen as prostitutes. She is surrounded by wealth, but her intellect and education are wasted.[7] All because of a moment of weakness: She met John and was taken by his roughness, which distinguished him against the blandness of Vault City's denizens. John manipulated her and hooked her on Jet; when the other citizens found out, Leslie's citizenship was revoked and she was kicked out. John was the only one she could turn to... and so she became his wife, eventually realizing that he planned it all.[8]

As such, she hates New Reno, its denizens,[9] the Bishops, and especially John.[10] To her, Reno is a city full of degenerates who can barely remember who they had sex with, let alone hold a conversation beyond sating the most base of instincts.[11] Whatever feelings once existed between her and John quickly disappeared, and their relationship now consists solely of John having drunken sex with her at night, which she considers his "least contemptible quality."[12]

Even motherhood has provided little solace for Leslie: her daughter Angela quickly learned what being a woman meant in New Reno, entering a never-ending spiral of sex, drugs, and violence. Leslie is quite aware of the similarities between her and her daughter, and empathizes.[13]

She is also keenly aware that this experience has thrown Angela's hormonal system out of order, making her hyperfertile.[14] She prefers that her lovers use a condom to prevent pregnancy, but also does not seem to mind having a grandchild. At any rate, she also feels a bit competitive towards her daughter: she does not mind having sex with Angela's lovers, if only to demonstrate how much more experienced she is.[15] Unlike her daughter, Leslie is bisexual and enjoys sex with both men and women.[16]

Sex provides only brief respite: Leslie has no option but to endure the indignity of living in Reno, and hoping that John will perish one day (which, to her, is worth celebrating with large quantities of champagne).[17] Until then, she continues to observe John, admitting with grudging respect that he has an admirable animal cunning in diplomacy, business, and crime.[18] There is also the matter of loyalty: Bishops watch out for their own, and if she left, she would be promptly returned to John. Finally, she does not believe that she has a future outside of New Reno, as the experience of living in Reno taught her to ignore her shrewd intellect and exceptional education.[19]

In reality, she is perfectly capable of filling John's shoes and assuming control of the Bishops, not least because John's men are also at her command:[20] She knows everything about his illicit dealings, in particular the NCR-New Reno alliance against Vault City and its political ramifications, John's detailed records kept for blackmail,[21] the use of deniable mercenaries to pressure Vault City,[22] and long term plans to make Reno a part of the Republic, so that the Bishops can control the drug trade within the NCR and manipulate their elections.[23] In fact, she even knows of a way to get rid of her husband in a deniable way, but needs someone brave (or stupid) enough to risk it.[24]

Personality[]

Leslie is highly intelligent, well educated, and very much frustrated with Reno. After the indignities suffered at John's hands, she indulges in a hedonistic lifestyle, leaning on the Bishop name to propose whomever she desires. Her husband is not the jealous type, and she uses these indulgences as a distraction.[25]

However, she knows her value: She has very little patience for silliness and stupidity. Idiots wasting her time run a high risk of being whipped with a pointed tongue, or even shot by Bishop goons.[26] The same applies to those who unsubtly objectify her and are not desirable to her for sex.[27]

However, if someone catches her eye, she can be very persuasive in order to get what she wants, whether through innocuous invitations or more direct approaches.[28] Even complete idiots have their uses, if they are strong or pretty enough.[29] However, embarrassing her at any point is enough for her to threaten to have the offender shot.[30]

Interactions with the player character[]

This character is involved in quests.

This character can be slept with.

Requires at least 6 Strength or Charisma (normal characters; stupid characters need 8 in either statistic)

Quests[]

Romance[]

  • If the player character has ST 6 or CH 6, and normal intelligence, then upon exiting conversation, Leslie will offer them a drink in her chambers. Refusing to follow her will lock out any further dialogue, unless the Chosen One promises to come back. Stupid characters will need either 8 Strength or 8 Charisma to be invited, and will not be able to talk about it.
    • With 9 Intelligence, getting her to mention Vault City downstairs will unlock the ability to ask her about her education in the post-coital conversation, paving the way to the unique Pip-Boy lingual enhancer.
  • Once invited, the only way to peacefully leave once she starts caressing the Chosen One is to mention a transaction with Jules. This will open up the option to return to her for another go.
    • Sleeping with Angela does not affect the opportunity to sleep with her mother. In fact, Leslie seems to relish the opportunity to show how much more experience she has.
  • Leslie will have sex with Chosen One regardless of their gender, which will have the same effects. The only difference is that male Chosen Ones can impregnate her, bringing the next Mr. Bishop into the world, which constitutes an alternate ending for New Reno. This ending can be prevented by carrying a condom in the inventory, which will be removed after sex.[31]
  • The actual performance in bed is governed by the player character's stats, which affects how much pillow talk they can indulge in. The higher the sex rating, the more questions they can ask:
      • Horrible (2) or Bad (3) yields no questions ("A few minutes into your love-making, Mrs. Bishop suddenly falls asleep. Soft snores begin to emanate from her body.")
      • Normal (5) grants a single question ("You make love. It's not the best. It's not the greatest. But, for a brief moment in your turbulent lives, you and Mrs. Bishop forget the cruelties of the world and lose yourselves in each other...")
      • Good (7) grants three questions ("Passionate lovemaking commences. At the end of your sexual marathon, Mrs. Bishop curls up against you, smiling contentedly.")
      • Great (9) grants 10, which is more than twice the base number of questions and uses the same message as Good.

Pillow talk[]

  • Regular characters get to ask the questions of Mrs. Bishop after sex. The questions are as follows:
    • Husband: Talking about John allows the Chosen One to learn a lot of dirty secrets, including the option to ask Leslie about his plans, which puts NCR and Vault City on the map, his goals for the alliance with the NCR, the combination to his safe (if the player tried to open it but failed; this does not disarm the trap), and finally grants the opportunity to Eliminate Mr. Bishop without having to slaughter the whole of the Shark Club.
    • Daughter: Leslie elaborates on Angela. Can be mostly safely skipped.
    • Family: A very expansive node, that eventually gives the option to suggest to Leslie that she should move on. This requires killing John and Intelligence 7; if the Chosen One is male, it also alters the Bishop Child ending.
    • Education: A node that is not at all useful, as Leslie is unwilling to talk about her past.
    • Vault City: Getting Mrs. Bishop to namedrop Vault City (asking about Vault 13 or the GECK works, unless either was already found) downstairs will unlock this option, if Chosen One has 9 Intelligence. Asking about Vault City will eventually lead Mrs. Bishop to mention the Pip-Boy lingual enhancer, which she will permit the Chosen One to collect. It is hidden in her safe and is only available if Leslie mentions it. The enhancer grants a permanent +10% to Speech and 500 XP upon use, on top of 250 XP for simply learning about it.
  • Finally, Leslie will fall asleep, muttering the combination to her safe. Note that this is the only benefit for stupid characters, who cannot engage in pillow talk. Note that sleeping with either of the Bishop ladies will eventually cause John Bishop to use it as leverage and force the Chosen One to work for him.

Appearances[]

Leslie Anne Bishop appears only in Fallout 2.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Leslie was originally named Lee Ann Bishop, as per the script listing. The name is still used in some messages.
  • When rejected and after accepting her drink, the Chosen One can respond to her shouting for the guards with "Fuck! I hate this game!" There are actually a number of fourth wall breaking expressions here.
  • A stupid Chosen One can trigger her call for the guards upstairs, and can reference John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, saying that "George won't let [them] play with the rabbits."[32]

Bugs[]

If the player saves and reloads while on the third floor after sleeping with Mrs. Bishop, all companions disappear. Sleeping with Mrs. Bishop again will resolve the issue.[verified]

The Chosen One: "{646}{}{Beg *NCR* for help? Why?}"
Mrs. Bishop: "{650}{}{Mmmmm…oh…well… (Turns over.) John promised NCR he'd give Vault City to them. So he sent out some of his men, told them to act like raiders until Vault City caved.}"
The Chosen One: "{652}{}{Uh... is there any PROOF of this anywhere?}"
Mrs. Bishop: "{815}{}{Mmmmmnnn...? I don't know. Maybe John's safe in his room... he prefers keeping meticulous records for blackmail purposes.}"
    (Leslie Anne Bishop's dialogue)
