The Mechanist was a fictional villain in the radio drama The Silver Shroud, serving as an antagonist to the Silver Shroud. In the series, his real identity was Mayor Murphy, the mayor of Boston.
Background[]
The Mechanist featured in a six-episode storyline that can be heard on Silver Shroud Radio. In this story, the mayor of Boston believed that humanity was weak and should be replaced by his own robot army, subsequently stylizing himself as the Mechanist.[1] Included in this army were the mobster Fat Fahey and a group of mob-bots (robots programmed to act as mobsters). Wishing to take down the crimefighter Silver Shroud, Mayor Murphy created a robot version of himself and set the robot to meet with Fat Fahey, purportedly to discuss some sort of illicit real estate transaction, in order to lure in the Silver Shroud and the Mistress of Mystery.[2][3] The robot was confronted by a pair of robbers in the alley and "killed." When the two investigated the mayor's involvement with the mob, they discovered that Fat Fahey and his accomplices were robots serving the Mechanist.[3][4] They discovered a surviving mob-bot who despised the Mechanist for treating them as disposable pawns and led them to the Mechanist's lair, a warehouse at the Boston pier.[5]
When the heroes arrived at the Mechanist's lair, he successfully captured them both with plans to kill the heroes. However, the two crimefighters were freed by the mob-bot who was helping them. They fought and destroyed the Mechanist's robot army, then tracked down the fleeing Mechanist with the mob-bot's help. In a last ditch effort, the Mechanist attempted to kill the Silver Shroud with the Shroud's own submachine gun. However, the Silver Shroud's apparel deflected the bullets, resulting in the bullets being deflected and hitting the Mechanist, gravely wounding him. The Silver Shroud unmasked him, revealing his true identity as Mayor Murphy, who revealed how he had faked his own death. He requested medical assistance but was promptly executed by the Shroud.[1]
