These guys aren't who I thought they were. Jesus, they killed that family for a sack of rotten vegetables. Getting out of here next chance I can without catching a bullet.— Personal journal #3

Jaime Dexter[Non-game 1] Palabras is a crazed ghoul in the Dunwich Building in 2277. He can be found worshiping a strange obelisk in the virulent underchambers.

Background[]

Jaime is of Hispanic ancestry,[1] and was born to a Ranger[Non-game 2] in the mid-wastelands.[Non-game 2] In his youth, he made a living scavenging at a place he called "the colony."[2]

At some point during or after the 2250s,[Non-game 2][3] his father brought back a mysterious old tome from an expedition, which he believed to be valuable. They then travelled to the Capital Wasteland, hoping to sell it to the scribes of the Brotherhood of Steel chapter who had recently settled there. Failing to sell the book to the Brotherhood, Jaime's father instead vowed to return it "to its source"[Non-game 2] and set off, leaving his son in an old hospital without a flashlight.[2]

In his late twenties,[1] Jaime set out southward in search of his father, and started recording a personal journal. He felt his father "went crazy" after acquiring the mysterious book, and resented being left to fend for himself.[2] Jaime eventually fell in with another group of travelers,[4] who turned out to be raiders. It was not long until they killed a family for a "sack of rotten vegetables," upon which he secretly resolved to get away from this dangerous group as soon as possible.[5] The opportunity to leave the raiders presented itself, when they were preparing to attack a group of traders. Jaime turned on the raiders, and in turn earned the thanks of the traders, who also happened to know where his father was headed.[6]

Following his father's trail, he headed to the Dunwich Building, where he found him to have turned into a feral ghoul, only recognizing him because of the Krivbeknih laying on the ground near him. Jaime took up the book as a memento of his father, while resting his body against the warm stone of the unusual obelisk behind him.[7] His final journal entry indicates that exposure to Ug-Qualtoth's obelisk caused him to lose his mind, chanting "Sharp knife. Sharp knife to send him to deep temple. Flay and say my words. Abdul comes again, on the feast of the weaker. Feast for the Deep Temple. Born again, here. Alhazzared G'yeth G'yeth."[8]
