Metal barrels are world objects in Fallout 4, and a settlement object in its add-on Wasteland Workshop.

Barrels are metal containers used before the Great War to store and transport materials.
Metal barrel[]
Metal barrels are either brown, red, or blue, with brown barrels being the most common. They are rusted and sometimes bent. Some can be grabbed and carried by the player character while others are not moving.
Fire barrel[]
Fire barrels are the non-bent variants of regular metal barrels containing burning wood. They emit light in a small area. One variant with a chain-like exterior can be built with Wasteland Workshop.
Radioactive barrel[]
Radioactive barrels are yellow and white metal barrels with a radiation hazard notice printed on the side. The radioactive barrels emit radiation in a small area. Once they are scrapped, the area may remain contaminated for a few seconds before going down to background radiation.

If the Sole Survivor picks up or hides behind a barrel, it will act as a shield from oncoming bullets.
