You see Ed. Ed's dead.— In-game description.

Ed is a skeleton in a Vault suit which lies just outside the exterior door of Vault 13 in 2161.

Background[]

Ed is a deceased human found initially outside of Vault 13. Little, if anything is known about his past prior to this. From his apparel though, it is visible that he too was a resident of Vault 13.

Ed's purpose is twofold: to immediately show that the outside world is dangerous, and to tell the Vault Dweller that they weren't the first person to leave the vault.

Appearances[]

Ed's corpse appears only in Fallout. The sprite is reused several times in Fallout 2 and also is mentioned in the Fallout Bible and Fallout: New Vegas.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Zed's Dead, baby, Zed's dead. From Pulp Fiction. That's part of the reference. Ed was twofold: to immediately show the player that the outside world was dangerous, and to tell the player that he wasn't the first choice of someone to send out.   • This references a line from the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction, spoken by Bruce Willis' character, Butch, differing by a single letter ("Zed's dead").

  1. On the way into Vault 34 there is a Vault jumpsuit-clad skeleton with a 10mm pistol and ammunition. This is a reference to Ed.
