Great American cockroaches, colloquially called giant cockroaches or radroaches, are giant versions of the pre-War species mutated by atomic radiation, found in the Midwest.[1]

Background[]

In the Midwestern wasteland, radroaches are a common sight. As in the Capital Wasteland, they can be encountered nearly everywhere, from old buildings to plains. It is speculated that radroach innards are useful in the treatment of radiation poisoning, and are widely used by tribals for that purpose.

Characteristics[]

Biology[]

However, they are drastically different and more dangerous than those met in the Capital Wasteland. They have a large, protected body and small legs, and their saliva is incredibly toxic. They are very aggressive and attack most other lifeforms unlucky enough to encounter them.

Gameplay attributes[]

Found mainly in underground areas and sewers across North America, these creatures can usually be found in fairly large groups. They feed on the dead but will go after living creatures if isolated. Their numbers are their greatest advantage.

Variants[]

The Midwestern radroaches are more varied than their Capital Wasteland counterparts. Three variations are currently known:

Small radroach[]

RadroachTactics

The weakest of the radroaches, this variant can easily be killed. Their bites, however, can poison an opponent, and when they are in large groups they can kill even a prepared combatant. Small radroaches are nearly the same size as their relatives in the Capital Wasteland.

Roachor[]

Roachor ingame

Roachor is a unique mutant radroach encountered by the Warrior of the Brotherhood of Steel. Roachor lived in the Peoria facility, which resulted in it becoming affected by the high amounts of radiation coming from a strange production device that was used in manufacturing fusion batteries. He is larger than any currently known radroach, being the same size as a car, and appears to glow in the dark. Its poison is even deadlier than that of Midwestern radroaches.

Appearances[]

Giant cockroaches appear in Fallout Tactics.

Behind the scenes[]

In real life, roaches are noted for their relatively high resistance to radiation (about five to ten times that of humans). What is never explained is their growing ability to reproduce, as high levels of radiation render normal cockroaches sterile.
