Cavern is a random encounter in Fallout 2. It can be inhabited by unique robbers who wield rare weapons and guard chests of valuable loot.

Overview[]

If a random encounter occurs in mountain terrain, its map will often contain a cave entrance.

After dealing with primary encounter outside, the Chosen One can optionally use the cave entrance to enter the cavern. (One of the cavern maps does not have a functioning cave entrance.)

Inhabitants[]

All cave inhabitants are hostile. Some pose little threat to a reasonably traveled character while others are very dangerous.

Creatures[]

92% of the time, a cavern contains one of four sets of creatures:[1]

Robbers[]

8% of the time, a cavern will contain a "special thief encounter" opportunity.[1] If the player passes a Luck roll, the cavern will be inhabited by robbers. Otherwise, the cavern will be completely empty.

The robbers' stats and equipment are determined by the Chosen One's current level:[2]

Robbers Level Possible robber weapons
LarmorsLeathergirl 1-5 10mm SMG, 10mm pistol, combat knife, spear, brass knuckles
6-10 Scoped hunting rifle, 10mm SMG, shotgun,.44 Magnum, Desert Eagle, sledgehammer, plated boxing gloves

Robbers and chests of loot

Many robbers carry a lot of ammunition. This cavern is the only location in all of Fallout 2 that enemies can wield:

Chests of loot[]

If robbers are present, the cavern will contain three chests of loot.[3]

  • Each chest contains a random amount of money, with upper and lower bounds dependent on the Chosen One's Luck. A chest can contain a maximum of $2,000 with 10 Luck.
  • Each chest contains 0-2 bonus items. The possible bonus items depend on the Chosen One's level. The best possibilities are a super sledge (level 6+), a power fist (level 8+) or a plasma rifle (level 11+).
