Ah, Bison Steve, you old shithole.Cass

The Bison Steve Hotel is an unmarked location within Primm in the Mojave Wasteland in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

Before the Great War, the Bison Steve was one of many casinos built in Primm. The owners of the nearby Vikki and Vance Casino didn't care for the competition and began spreading rumors about the establishment. Primm Slim was programmed by them to direct any inquirers away from the hotel and claim that the dealers cheat and that the rollercoaster wasn't built to code.[1]

Following the nuclear apocalypse, the Hotel was left largely intact though its rollercoaster attraction was left inoperable. Sometime prior to 2281, a post-War resident of Primm, Old Laurie took over the building and began renting rooms to make money; she was among those that fled from Primm months prior to October of 2281, leaving the building empty once again.[2]

Following the breakout at the NCR Correctional Facility, a group of escaped convicts stormed Primm, killing the town sheriff and his wife, taking the lone deputy Beagle as a hostage, and moved into the deserted Bison Steve to make it their headquarters as they plundered Primm and its caravan traffic, meanwhile forcing the remaining residents to shelter in the Vikki and Vance Casino.

Layout[]

Exterior[]

The broken El Diablo rollercoaster track wraps around the building. Two escaped convicts have taken positions along these tracks and will often try to shoot the player character if they are spotted. Two additional convicts are located between the hotel and the Vikki and Vance Casino. The front door of the casino leads to the main floor. The second floor can be accessed from a door exiting to the rollercoaster track. The sign above the main entrance advertises attractions such as 21, keno, a restaurant, shows, and slots.

Main floor[]

Inside the hotel, on the lowest, main floor, six convicts and an escaped convict leader inhabit the main floor. One or two of them will usually be found near the entrance, with most of the rest remaining near the large dining room in the back of the building. In this back room, the convicts have attempted to fortify themselves with upturned tables. A direct assault can be circumvented by using the Bison Steve maintenance key or opening the Easy-locked maintenance door for quick access to the kitchen.

Behind the reception desk at the entrance, a storage room can be accessed either through the Hard-locked door or the Easy-locked terminal on the counter, in addition to an Average-locked safe which contains Med-X. Beyond the main entrance area, a gift shop is located with a Hard-locked safe behind the counter and a copy of Tales of a Junktown Jerky Vendor sitting on top of it. A stairwell leads to the second floor. Alternatively, the elevator can be repaired with 35 Repair. though this provides no experience reward. Once repaired, it leads to the second floor from the first, and vice versa.

Upper floors[]

The upper floors are inhabited by six additional convicts. One of them holds a worn key to the Average-locked gun cabinet on the third floor. A ransom note also can be found here. Two doors down there is a room with two skeletons, Psycho, a couple of doses of Med-X, a switchblade, and a suitcase, There is an inaccessible area northwest on the third floor that is blocked by a broken door on one side and a tilted desk in the hallway on the other. Jumping beside the desk in that hallway still results in being blocked, as do attempts in the adjacent hall, where a collapse blocks a portal through which one can glimpse the inaccessible area. There is no way from the roof or outside ledge into the blocked area.

Notable loot[]

  • Lucky - a unique variant of the .357 Magnum revolver, found also in the gift shop, inside the Hard-locked floor safe behind the cash registers.
  • One Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle cap - On an end table next to a bottle (opposite the elevator).
  • Incinerator - Carried by the escaped convict leader in the main room on the first floor.

Notes[]

  • It is possible to get to the highest point of the roller coaster by following the track from behind the hotel or using the door on the second floor of the hotel. However, no items can be found there.
  • It is possible to get on the roof of the hotel, though nothing of note can be found there there other than the sign and a roller coaster car on the lower roof.
  • At 8 PM, room lights can be seen turning on from the exterior, but there's no corresponding event taking place on the interior of the building.
  • After completing My Kind of Town with any outcome, any and all remaining convicts inside the Bison Steve will be killed instantly and one can safely enter the building and loot their corpses. Convicts outside, such as those on the roller coaster, are not affected.
    • If the quest is completed with the NCR, one may also be met by an NCR trooper walking down one of the corridors and out of the hotel. This trooper is not named and will only give a general dialogue response.
  • There is a framed newspaper on the wall of the Vikki and Vance containing an article about a resident found "splattered" on the Bison Steve roller coaster.[3]
  • When approaching the location with Cass as an active companion, she will speak derisively of the Hotel.[4]

The convict may also be in a seated position in mid-air to one side of the stool that's he's supposed to be sitting on. [verified]
