The Powder Gangers stole into town at night and murdered my sister and her husband, the sheriff, in bed, while I was sleeping in the office.Deputy Beagle

Sheriff McBain was the sheriff of Primm who, along with his wife, was killed by escaped convicts in his sleep in late October, 2281.

Background[]

McBain was known as a brave man and a good sheriff that protected Primm.[1] He and his wife's murder were witnessed by Beagle who proceeded to spy on the convicts instead of doing anything else,[2] leaving the McBains' decapitated corpses behind at the sheriff's office to rot. They were only given a proper burial by the townsfolk of Primm once peace was restored.

Notes[]

  • His outfit is identical to that of Lucas Simms from Fallout 3, consisting of a sheriff's duster and sheriff's hat that can be found on the floor near his corpse.
  • The bodies of Sheriff McBain and his wife disappear after restoring peace to Primm.
  • There is a script where his head blows off when the Courier enters the house.

Appearances[]

Sheriff McBain's corpse appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes[]

Joshua Sawyer stated that while some naked corpses in the game could be seen as indicative of "defilement," the McBains in particular are examples of where the naked bodies are used to represent that they were killed in their sleep.[3]

  1. Beagle: "Well! That was quite a per-dicament you rescued me from, there in the Bison Steve. A most unpleasant experience. Going in alone to rescue a hostage! My brother-in-law was brave like that. Made a fine sheriff. Until the Powder Gangers killed him. Problem is, there's still no law in Primm. What're we to do the next time ruffians menace us and hold us hostage?"

  2. The Courier: "How'd you end up being a hostage?"
Deputy Beagle: "I must say it's been the low point of my career in law enforcement... The Powder Gangers stole into town at night and murdered my sister and her husband, the sheriff, in bed, while I was sleeping in the office. I watched them for a bit, waiting for the right moment to pounce and arrest the lot of them. Taking careful notes as I watched. To my dismay, they found me while I waited in the shadows and brought me here."

Joshua Sawyer: "'Are naked bodies in the game supposed to be indicative of defilement?' Um... I think there are some places where you could read that in, in other places, they're just people who were in bed. Like, I think with those two, they were killed in their sleep."
