(4) No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.— Article I Section 9(4) of the Constitution of the Confederate States

The Confederate States of America (CSA or C.S.A.), commonly referred to as the Confederacy, or simply "rebels," was an unrecognized nation that attempted to secede from the United States of America during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. It was originally formed by seven states in the Lower South region of the United States whose economy was mostly dependent upon agriculture, particularly cotton, and a plantation system of production that largely relied upon slave labor.

Background[]

The Confederate States were formed from a number of southern states that seceded from the Union, beginning on December 20, 1860 with the secession of South Carolina. Ten more states followed South Carolina in secession and officially formed the Confederate States of America on March 11, 1861 when the Confederate Congress ratified its Constitution.[Non-game 1]

The Army of the Confederacy assaulted Fort Sumter in South Carolina and took it from Union control. This sparked the American Civil War.[Non-game 1] The first land battle of the war happened near Philippi, Virginia, where on June 3, 1861, the Union planned a pre-dawn assault on the Confederates, which resulted in their retreat.[3] A battlefield cemetery was subsequently established on the site.[4] The Confederacy dissolved four years later when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant following the Battle of Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The Confederacy officially dissolved a month later when Union President Andrew Johnson declared resistance in the south to be dwindled and virtually gone.[Non-game 1]

Notes[]

  • In late 2077, soon after Roger Maxson declared that his unit had seceded from the union, he mentioned Confederate president Jefferson Davis in a recording: "They remember Jefferson Davis. What will history say about me?"[1]
  • The song Dixie appears on Enclave Radio. In modern culture, Dixie is considered a Confederate anthem, prompting a comparison between the two governments.
    • Similar to the Confederate States of America, the Enclave have engaged in legalized slavery.[Non-game 2]
    • The Enclave claim to be the continuation of the pre-War American Federal government,[5] which was committing or permitting acts of targeted, discriminatory mass violence up to the day the bombs fell, notably through concentration camps which targeted Chinese Americans and political dissidents.[6][7][8][9]
  • In Point Lookout, the wealthy eccentric Jacob Humboldt is a history enthusiast who collects Confederate memorabilia, although he is currently boasting a "Confederate shotgun" that is entirely historically inaccurate.[Non-game 3] Humboldt happens to be Black.
  • In the area of Point Lookout, various antiques from the time of the Confederacy and the American Civil War can be found. Confederate hats and rifles are very common finds. Confederate clothing can also be found at historic sites in Appalachia.
  • Within Point Lookout, natural bio-gas bubbles up from the swamps, released from the bodies of soldiers who were buried and covered in lye during the Civil War.[10]
  • In Fallout 76, in the Pioneer Scout badge exam, one of the questions asks "Which cipher, named for a French diplomat, was used by the Confederacy during the Civil War?" The correct answer is the Vigenère cipher, which was historically used by the Confederacy.[11]
  • In the pre-War western film Last Stand at Fort McGee, the Fightin' Furies had to face members of the Confederate army.[12]

Appearances[]

The Confederate States of America are mentioned in Fallout, Fallout 3 and its add-on Point Lookout, the Fallout 4 add-on Far Harbor, and Fallout 76.
