Collecting the Vault 87 Map Marker in Fallout 3
March 18, 2010
With a radiation marker placed just underneath the ground, emitting 5,000 rads per second and peaking at just under 4,000 rads per second at ground level, makes collecting the Vault 87 map marker no easy feat.
Whether you want to collect the map marker for the sake of completion, the additional caps on offer in the Geomapping quest by Reilly, an extra fast-travel location, or purely for the challenge, you need to come well prepared.
Unless you already have your Radiation Resistance at the maximum of 85, a Rad-X will bring it up to this level, and you will need an ample supply of RadAway (bringing 50 or more would be suggested) to keep the fatally high levels of radiation at bay. Binding the RadAway to a hotkey is HIGHLY recommended!
There are a number of Super Mutants that guard the entrance and surrounding hills. You may wish to eliminate them first before attempting to make it to the Vault entrance, so that your progress is unhindered and are not distracted when you make your attempt.
Take your Rad-X (if required) when you get close to the Radiation warning signs, and as you approach you will begin to encounter low levels of radiation that will quickly rise as you approach the ground level entrance to the Vault.
Monitor your radiation level with the meter that appears in the top right hand corner of the screen, and administer RadAway as appropriate to maintain it below the fatal maximum. As you can hear from the soundtrack, this will entail rapid doses in quick succession to avoid dying.
(If you wish to take alternative paths, other than that illustrated in the video, that have a shorter period of exposure to radiation, you may wish to take the path up the bank to the right of the main gate and drop in from the cliffs at the side, or approach from the north (rear) and drop in from the cliffs above the entrance, before making a hasty exit.)
Once you get close to the entrance door, the Vault 87 map marker will be added to your Pip-Boy, and you can beat a hasty retreat to the gate, where the radiation levels will subside, and you can save the game safe in the knowledge that the challenge has been completed.
Congratulations! You have completed one of the more difficult challenges in Fallout 3!
