Scope?[]

All of the quests need work. F3 quests are too full of bugs and extra notes, F1 and F2 quests are too short or (in the case of most of San Fran's) non-existent. Will this be for all of them? Nitty Tok. 20:47, March 18, 2010 (UTC)

Alright, so how about the missions in FOT? Nitty Tok. 20:58, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Layout and other guidelines[]

We certainly need the quests standardized and cleaned up. I have a few suggestions on how to proceed:

  • FO and FO2 quests should be a project separate from FO3 quests.
  • Copy the content from one of the quests (You Gotta Shoot 'Em in the Head or Tranquility Lane) onto a Vault Wasteland page.
  • Use the wasteland page to work out a good approach to formatting and layout. Get that page looking good before implementing guidelines across the wiki.
  • Tackle project guidelines first. Discuss options, reach consensus, write it all down in an organized fashion.

Good luck! I wish this project the best.--Gothemasticator 20:58, March 18, 2010 (UTC)

I don't see a problem in combining the need for two quest projects into one. We did the same thing with the Van Buren and Fallout Bible docs. Nitty Tok. 21:00, March 18, 2010 (UTC)
Quest structure in FO3 is different from that in the first two games. I'm guessing layout differences will end up being important.--Gothemasticator 21:51, March 18, 2010 (UTC)
Makes sense to start with those quests as they are quite large. I agree on keeping the different game quests separate from FO3. The layout will be different. I keep popping in and seeing what needs to be done. --Kingclyde 00:42, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
I don't think there's that much of a difference between the games. The only thing needed for FO3 which the older games don't have are lists of quest stage IDs (the format of which needs to be discussed, see Forum:FO3 quest stages). We made a layout guideline for quests back when we introduced the policies btw: Fallout Wiki:Article layout guideline/Quest article. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:45, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
I think both keeping them in one project or in separate ones would work, as long as the layouts are kept consistent. Ausir(talk) 13:20, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Guidelines discussion[]

All the discussion of guidelines needs to get done before we can start.

The Interactions template on character pages includes a section called "Effects of player actions". I think that would be a nice addition to at least the F3 quests. Nitty Tok. 21:19, March 18, 2010 (UTC)

Project[]

Out of curiosity, should we not finish one project before we create another. I remember Porter saying something about not having to many unfinished projects. We do have six unfinished projects currently in the works. --Kingclyde 00:47, March 19, 2010 (UTC)

I doubt that we'll ever finish any projects; there are always more revisions we can add. Nitty Tok. 01:05, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
The FO3 NPC project will be finished before the release of New Vegas! I declare it!--Gothemasticator 04:48, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
Sweet! Good work Goth! --Kingclyde 06:53, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
Well, projects aren't meant to be indefinite. The idea is to adapt the target pages to a certain standard; once you've adapted all of them, the project is done. If you want to change the pages again, you start a new project etc. In general, we shouldnt spread our resources too thin or the projects will never get done. That said, I won't stop anyone from starting new projects. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:45, March 19, 2010 (UTC)

Comments on suggested guidelines on project page[]

The description of the quest should not be brief. On the quest page, the description should be thorough. Identifying quest stages, pipboy update statuses, player choices, etc., should all be thorough. Everywhere else on the wiki - NPC pages, location pages - can be brief and link to the quest article for more info.

See the forum and layout pages Porter linked to for more info.--Gothemasticator 09:08, March 19, 2010 (UTC)

Exactly. Full walkthroughs are an absolute must. Several of them, including important ones like Retrieve the GECK for Arroyo, are lacking that. Nitty Tok. 21:25, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
I'd disagree with this bit: "If the quest goes anywhere new or where they are not allowed to re-enter, what items or characters are found there, i.e Mobile Base Crawler." A quick note that the player will not be allowed to re-enter is enough, no need to list the characters or items on the quest page. I'd also suggest using the agreed quest layout instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. For example, "background", "related quests" or "appearances" sections aren't really needed for quests. You also need to flesh out what "completing the infobox" entails, i.e. which parameters need to be present etc, otherwise everybody will end up doing it differently.
Regarding the progress tables, I'd can "Bugs section added/completed"; it's not that central to quest pages that it'd need separate action from "rewriting/rearranging the text". There's also a certain overlap between between "rewrite/rearrange text" and "walkthrough", "rewards" as well as "bugs" as the latter are actually included in the first (although you could argue that walkthrough and rewards are central enough to be separate; I'd still combine them into one item though). What's missing is "check/add quest image" and for FO3 & add-on quest "add quest stages". Just a few suggestions off the top of my head. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:01, March 25, 2010 (UTC)

A Medal?[]

As immature as this may sound, is there going to be a little medal for all the participators :D? Nukey (Tok) (Blag) 19:39, March 22, 2010 (UTC)

If you make it. (Just make sure it's really immature. ;) )--Gothemasticator 19:47, March 22, 2010 (UTC)

Title[]

YES - Innnnnn my opinion, it should be noted in quest pages where to find unique weapons, skill books, stuff lke that regardless, would make some people's life a lot easier. StarfishCostume 09:48, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

I agree with you. Whoever took the reigns while I was 'away' I have great gratitude for them. Whoever it was, leave me a message telling me it was them so I can give them a shout-out about it. (nice mini rhyme there:]--Vault4 17:15, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

See my comment in #Comments on suggested guidelines on project page above. Listing characters and loot is what the location pages are for; listing the same stuff in multiple places only leads to conflicting info eventually (see FW:ORG#Redundancy and repetition). -- Porter21 (talk) 09:46, April 14, 2010 (UTC)

Fallout 1 "quests"[]

On the project page it states that we should say if the quest is a quest, side quest, or unmarked quest. However I find that the only true "quests" in fallout 1 are Find the Water Chip, Destroy the Mutant leader, and Destroy the source of the Mutants. Am I wrong in thinking this? While some quests will point you in the right direction, they are not essential to progress the story line. Basically I am wondering if quests like Stop the Radscorpions are side quests while Cure Jarvis of Radscorpion Poison is an unmarked quest. Reaver10 02:09, November 27, 2010 (UTC)

Quest Names[]

It seems to be standard practice for FO1-2 quest pages to be named after their Pip- Boy descriptions, as that's the closest we have to an in- game name. However, this has resulted in more than a few overly long page titles. Farrel wants you to find Cornelius's gold pocket watch. Find it and return it to Farrel, for example, is simply absurd, in my opinion. If for nothing other than aesthetic reasons, should we consider coming up with shorter alternate titles for these pages?
