The Fallout: New Vegas consumables project is a project which aims to improve content and accuracy of Fallout: New Vegas consumables. So many of these items are very inconsistent and most of them are stubs. Hopefully someone else can add pictures lifted from G.E.C.K. (I'm an xbox games myself sorry...), there should also be rough locations guides for most items.

Scope

All items on Fallout: New Vegas consumables.

Guidelines

  • We need a standard infobox for all items.
  • Images from G.E.C.K for all items possible.
  • Effects should be listed in a standard format - always at 100 Survival.
  • Are we using Food or Hunger?
  • Are SPECIAL modifiers written as Strength/ST/STR?
  • For plants should we picture them as "wild on the plant", after they're picked or both?

Here's two examples of bad pages (no offense to contributors!):

Rum_&_Nuka - It doesn't list effects in the "hardcore mode format"; effect(seconds). No locations listed.

Buffalo_gourd_seed - It says Food when most other says Hunger? Missing sections. Image has HUD visible.

I'd use the in-game abbreviations - FOD, H2O and SLP. Ausir(talk) 08:56, November 25, 2010 (UTC)
^I second that. On another note, maybe we should list the effects with 0 survival skill? Personally, if I was searching for some foods that are valuable and the page said it gives -200 FOD, for example, but I only had 19 survival I'd be a little disappointed when I found out that the food had 1/3 of the listed effect (I think that's right). Whereas I'd be happy to find that it gives double the effect if I had 50 survival and the page listed it's 0 survival effects. Either way, I'll be happy to help. I see your point Galacticprophecy but everything else on the wikia is listed as optimum conditions. Guns damage is listed as all requirements (strength etc) and 100% condition. Even on all the Fallout 3 stuff like a stimpack or purified water gives x healing at 100 Medicine. Thanks for volunteering by the way :) Hopefully some progress can be made soon!--The--dud 08:47, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
Why not list both? This way users could see the extremes of the consumable and judge where there skill level will fall? Courier 6 3:31, January 6, 2011 (UTC)
Roger dodger. Makes perfect sense. Galacticprophecy 10:24, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
I agree with Courier 6, if we are going to do one extreme, couldn't we do both? Magistorikus 7:37, January 6, 2011 ( EST)

I've been paying attention to this, and I have a few things to contribute to the discussion:

1. Listing of effects. Generally other articles list the magnitude of effects/damage/etc. in terms of what value is set in the GECK for each item (not "optimal conditions"). For New Vegas consumables, the values listed in the GECK are the effects when you have a Survival/Medicine skill of 0. I will say that we should probably have something which describes the range of possible effects, which is why I modified the infobox to have an optional "skill" field. Ideally that would interface with the listed values similar to how damage is noted on weapons, e.g. the base value, followed by the theoretical maximum in parenthesis. It would probably need to be adjusted for consumables, but you get the idea. The important part is that we should list the base value because that's what the various formula listed in the appropriate skill articles use.

2. Abbreviations. Abbreviations are unnecessary when we have an entire infobox to work with. Yes, we COULD use abbreviations, but the game also uses very specific terminology in-game to describe effects (e.g. "Starvation", "Dehydration", etc.). I doubt anybody won't understand that "Starvation" is synonymous with "FOD", and if they do they can just click on the link and see that the "Starvation" article mentions that "FOD" is the abbreviation used in-game. Also, I'd like to point out that except for some VERY specific infobox fields (e.g. S.P.E.C.I.A.L.) the "correct" way of noting stat changes is by using the complete, spelled out version of the stat, e.g. "Strength" versus "ST", based on various guidelines used for other, similar articles.

  • I understand why we might as well spell it all out, but right now everything is abbreviated correctly. In game it also uses these abbreviations and I have yet to see the game ever mention "Starvation". Courier 6 10:27, January 16, 2011
    • "You are now sick with Minor Starvation." "You are now sick with Minor Dehydration." etc. Also, these are the names used internally by the GECK. -- Yukichigai 21:39, January 29, 2011 (UTC)
In my view it is best to use the data from the GECK, pretty much for the same reasons as listed by Yukichigai.
As for the use of abbreviations, it is customary to first use the word in its full wording along with the abbreviation term to associate said abbreviation term. That way there can be no misinterpretation by readers of what the abbreviation is referring to. Dont forget, not all readers have the game to know what the terms mean (Example: Now I don't even own New Vegas, so I can't say what the correct values are... was checking out stats prior to getting the game.) For example when writing in a article page, you would first write something like this "xxx reduces Starvation (FOD) by xx amount" (Example Wikipedia:Submachine gun) to do anything else is just laziness by the editor. However there are a few exceptions to this rule, in the case of info boxes this would be due to limited space. In that regards then you absolutely need to link to the right article page so a reader can check to be sure they understand what you are talking about. But you need to keep this to a minimum unless really needed, so the reader is not required to open up page after page to understand what is being read. ☣Avatar☣ 22:26, January 29, 2011 (UTC)
On a side note, the overview page really needs to be sorted first. For starters the crafting section needs to be abolished for several reasons, there is a whole page dedicated to crafting, a lot of it is either repeated information or legacy content that don't exist in New Vegas. However some of the items have not been included in the main tables and needs to be done first before removing in from the page. ☣Avatar☣ 21:44, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

Progress

Sort of started now, lost a bit count of all I've done:

  • With the help of
  • Gothemasticator (talk · contribs) the new page template for FNV consumables now has a Locations section by default.
  • Fixed LOADS of red items Fallout: New Vegas consumables, only a few Irradiated items left.
  • Fixed the effects on the tables on Fallout: New Vegas consumables so they have some consistency.
  • Created Fallout: New Vegas addictions which redirects to Addiction but a lot more work is needed.
  • The other day I also did some work on the Fallout: New Vegas Navbox.
  • Small details, I went through and replaced Hunger, Starvation and Food to FOD, any Dehydration's into H2O and and any H20's into H2O's. For all consumables.
