Dirty water is a consumable item featured in Fallout 4.

A carton of plain river water, contaminated by radioactive fallout. Typically one would only drink this in an emergency.

At a cooking station, dirty water can be used to make various stews and soups, when combined with other ingredients. Three cartons of dirty water can also be turned into one purified water.

At a chemistry station, dirty water is used in the construction of the berserk syringe and Lock Joint syringe ammunition for the Syringer.

  • Seven can be found at Weston water treatment plant, five at the reception desk and two in the room directly behind it.
  • Two can be found on a shelf in the northwest corner in the Railroad HQ near Carrington.
  • Can be sold by food and drink vendors at player settlements. Up to nine can be sold in Restaurants.
  • Can be found in various indoor locations around the Commonwealth.
  • While playing on Survival mode, it can be generated by the player by using the "Fill Bottle" option when being next to a water site, when there are empty bottles in one's inventory.
    • Works with empty beer bottles, Nuka-Cola bottles, milk bottles and others.

  • Noticeably, dirty water is usually considerably scarcer to find throughout the Fallout 4 world than purified water.
  • Interestingly, dirty water is cleaner than any water drank directly from the source. The action of drinking directly from a source grants the player character 3 rads and 5 hp, so a proportional amount needed to heal as much as the dirty water item itself would inflict 12 rads. Thus, it is always recommended to fill bottles to create it as opposed to drinking the water directly.
  • Although glass bottles are used (and consumed) in the process, the item acquired is still the cardboard tetra-pak like normal, this is most likely an oversight, as the player doesn't have to carry any kind of box/material to create the box, when using the "Fill Bottle" option.
